Why is the TSA taking out nipple rings and pantsing amputees?

July 23, 2008 11:36am

My favorite part of this article is the quote from the TSA spokesman who says there have ONLY been 110,000 abuse complaints since 9/11.

My mother-in-law has artificial knees and has undergone various levels of search from a simple wand pass to full pat-down. I don't think she has been subjected to a strip search...yet... but she says some of the folks have been rough and rude.

Man has blood alcohol level of 0.491

July 23, 2008 9:55am

My question is this: did the police follow up with a blood test? Whenever I see something like this I have to wonder if the equipment was functioning properly. I have little doubt that the guy was drunk, but it seems far more likely that the breathalyzer was wrong than that this guy was conscious and "driving" with a BAC of .491.

Lessons Learned.

I haven't following this "controversy" closely, and am, in fact, breaking the rules in that I have not read all of the above comments. However, I feel like I have to weigh in. I have a gut reaction to the idea that you guys are going to discuss unpublishing (deletions or whatever!) before doing them. This seems somehow more sinister to me. It seems that as long as you are removing your own work and not each others that perhaps a quick heads-up to the others should be all that is required. I know that you guys all respect one another, but any discussion of what should be removed seems to open the door to pressure to delete or not delete that could lead to censorship. Like I said, as long as no one is allowed to remove another person's posts, I think you have the right to edit/unpublish/delete/amend.... That being said, I do appreciate the bb policy of showing your edits.

I guess sodomy just makes me lose my appetite.

Computer desk is exactly that

I'm sorry, but this thing looks like a nightmare from Logan's Run. Just add Windows to wake up in a cold sweat.

US wastes "27% of food available for consumption"

May 18, 2008 9:23am

Most of what Americans eat is garbage anyway. That being said, I agree that it is not only just as bad to eat more than you need...it is worse! Obesity is a huge drain on our national (planetary) resources. I have a hard time coming to terms with the number of products that are marketed to diabetics. (NOTE: it is wonderful that there are healthy products available to help control blood sugar levels, that is not my point.) The idea that the market for these products is large enough to make their widespread advertising and prominent product placement in stores viable is something that I have a hard time wrapping my brain around.

Horseradish smell fire-alarm for waking up deaf people

#18 OMG, you're right. I can't believe I never thought about that. And wasabi powder looks like that orchid drug in Adaptation. Coincidence?

Help Me Plan a Week Working in the Woods

March 4, 2008 8:34am

I would like to suggest this as an excellent time to give up the cigarettes. Pack a couple boxes of nicorette gum or patches, which will take up considerably less space and take advantage of the fact that you will be out of your routine.

Re-lensing glasses by mail

February 21, 2008 8:06pm

My son bought a pair of glasses online and while the prescription was correct, the frames broke within a couple weeks. I may give it a try for a spare pair, but I typically get my vintage frames lensed at ForEyes. They charge about $70 and if they screw up the frames you provide they will give you a free pair from their line. So far they have been perfect on 4 or 5 vintage frames that I have had done there.

HawkEye Field Sobriety Test Checks for Pupil Dilation

January 17, 2008 9:09am

This REALLY scares me. When my 18-year-old daughter visits the eye doctor they are able to examine her eyes without dilating eye drops. Apparently a combination of her natural physiology and anti-depressant meds she takes keep her eyes dilated. Up till now, the only real downside has been the need for dark glasses to protect her sensitive eyes in sunlight, but I can imagine the legal battle she might face if these things are in the hands of the Atlanta PD.

New York Archdiocese's anti-pedophile coloring book

December 3, 2007 11:26am

Jeez, I hate this stuff. My son spent years in fear of talking to anyone (sometimes including me) in case that person was a STRANGER! I can just imagine a mother having to explain to a youngster that we don't have to leave the public restroom door open when we are alone in there with Mommy, even though she IS an adult.

Any idea how much they are charging for this fabulous piece of merchandise?

Harper's Weekly

I love the word "vajayjay." There are so many derogatory words for vagina and this one is so inviting.

Japanese man documents the life of a vending machine

September 21, 2007 3:12pm

My son was in Japan last summer for a study abroad semester. He had an assignment in which he had to interview Japanese people on the street and his group chose to ask about vending machine experiences. One of the questions they asked was something like "what do you do if you put in your money and don't get the right item or if nothing comes out?" Almost all of the people they spoke to were VERY confused by this. They got responses like "how can that happen?" or "It cannot be." They did find one or two who had lost money to a machine to whom they then taught the English idiom "the machine ate my money." The Japanese were quite amused by this concept.
