Experts outraged that Wii Fit calls children "overweight"
May 16, 2008 11:38am
Coupon queen spends $10/week on family groceries
May 16, 2008 8:58am
Yeah, where'd that $10 a week figure come from? Unless that $15.38 she spent is for like 6 weeks worth of stuff, I can't see how it averages out. Not to mention that she spends $5 just to buy the papers that the coupons come in. And yeah, gas on driving to all the different stores/farmer's markets can't be cheap either.
California Supreme Court rules for same-sex marriage
May 16, 2008 8:54am
One thing not mentioned - there are already activist groups with enough signatures on petitions to get an item added to the ballot in the next election, that will add a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in California. And the Guvernator has come out against the petitions saying that he supports the court's decision.
Vintage aviation hostess photos
May 16, 2008 8:50am
At least in those days they were encouraged to be friendly. Nowadays, air hostesses (if they've been doing the job long enough) are almost inevitably cranky, miserable people. At least, that's been my experience when flying over the last couple years. Except in Southeast Asia (Singapore Airlines and their short-hop brand, Silk Air, in particular) where they almost are all young, beautiful, super perky women.
Italian tourist detained by Homeland Security for visiting his American girlfriend
May 15, 2008 1:49pm
“Also, who on earth would ever seek asylum from Italy?”
Apparently, people will seek asylum from ANY country. I read something in the paper this morning (here in Toronto) that said over 1000 people applied for asylum in Canada, from the USA.
Universal Music: when we get hit with copyright damages, that's "unconstitutionally excessive"
May 15, 2008 6:05am
Well, what I want to know is, does Universal/the RIAA generally seek punitive damages in a 10:1 ratio between punitive and compensatory damages? Because they don't seem to be arguing that the compensatory damages are excessive, nor are they arguing that the $150k statutory damages are excessive, they're arguing that the punitive damages, at 10:1, are an excessive ratio. They seem to be arguing that if it were 5:1, for example, or 2:1, they wouldn't have a problem with it. Which doesn't really smack of hypocrisy to me all that much. If they were arguing about the statutory or compensatory damages, then it might be a bit more blatant.
And #5: they only used one song without permission. Yes, they reproduced it a great many times, but it was only one song. So if you only downloaded one song, you'd only get hit with one (still very large) fine.
Hands free umbrella with name of space prostitute is inventor's $400k dream
May 5, 2008 11:52am
I didn't read this as an adverstory... I read this as a tongue in cheek, high-on-the-irony piece. It really, *really* seemed like it was making fun of it.
Chargeback database protects merchants--unless you pay to be removed from it
May 5, 2008 11:48am
I have to agree, that anybody who would use such a list and refuse my business, is somebody who I would not like to do business with. There is no legitimate reason for a business to use such a system.
How many cases of credit card chargebacks are from people who are trying to scam, with their own credit cards? I'm willing to bet that it is a fairly small proportion. A much larger proportion of chargebacks would be stolen credit cards, methinks. So the only reason for having this list is for vendors to threaten you with it, to prevent a chargeback. And that's just slimy.

They had something similar to this in Ireland. They called it "Billy Roll". I was under the impression that it was similar to bologna, though I never tried it.
Droog's Do Hit Chair, complete with sledgehammer
May 2, 2008 12:11pm
I think you're missing what is being sold here. It's the design idea that is really what this is about. And in this world being original trumps mindless copycats every time. It's a lot like haute couture ie bragging rights among people who don't need to worry about pragmatic realities. If you want to compete in that sphere then you need to create something truly original, unique, and in line with their current tastes in fashion.
Hrmm. Unique or original? I suppose so. But come on... if I sell MY "hollow sheet metal cubes with a sledgehammer" at 25% of the price, I can pick up the low-end knock off buyers! Now THAT is how capitalism works! I can set up on a sidewalk in New York City... Hrmm, now how can I squeeze a couple of these things into a coat or cheap briefcase?
Droog's Do Hit Chair, complete with sledgehammer
May 2, 2008 10:32am
My goodness. This looks profoundly uncomfortable. So how much does sheet metal run at Home Depot? I should start selling these myself.
iPhone coming to Canada
April 29, 2008 11:10am
Great. And since it's with Rogers, we'll get a really good deal. Sign up for a 3 year contract @ $150 a month for unlimited usage, and get the phone for only $700!
My question is, will it be 3G?
Copyright crazies gaining steam in Canada
April 26, 2008 6:24am
Damn, and I kinda liked McTeague. He's always letting us know when gas prices are going to go up or down by a huge amount.
Beamz: laser theremin thingie on sale at Sharper Image
April 24, 2008 12:23pm
I thought the Sharper Image was shutting down?
Nalgene changes plastic recipe amid health concerns
April 18, 2008 1:22pm
Ho hum. How long until the chemical they switched to becomes linked to some new crazy syndrome?
Perfect length for a pop song: 2:42
April 18, 2008 7:01am
I like The Morning News, but let's be honest here folks - everything they publish there is done with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. It's a funny piece. A few notable songs from my collection come in at 2:42, but hardly the best of my collection.
SpaceWesterns -- space opera meets horse opera
April 17, 2008 7:23am
Somebody already beat me to it, but yes - Firefly is a classic example of the space western. Absolutely awesome show that never got a chance. I guess it's no Cops, right Fox? Sigh... At any rate, #3, it's pretty established that Serenity was Whedon's last foray into that world. But fret not, you can still get your Nathan Fillion fix if you watch Desperate Housewives! :/
Orlando-area people raise monkey as surrogate kids -- "monkids"
April 11, 2008 12:50pm
And in other, seemingly unrelated news - dementia appears to be on the rise in the Orlando area!
Seriously, I would be kinda pissed if my mom decided to raise a monkey after I moved out of the house, and it got better toys than I did.
Also, please tell me these people aren't piercing their monkeys' ears. That's just cruel.
Mechanical wondercycle exercisulator of 1931
April 7, 2008 8:12am
Man, that's one thing my gym lacks - neck workout machines!
Amsterdam currency exchangers won't take US dollars
March 18, 2008 8:36am
In all seriousness though, this is somewhat interesting. I wasn't aware that the USD was sliding so dramatically VS the euro. Of course, one imagines that the hotels are still willing to exchange currency at their exorbitant rates.
Amsterdam currency exchangers won't take US dollars
March 18, 2008 8:34am
ALL the way downtown? From the Anne Frank House? My goodness! That's like a 15-20 minute walk!
Hairstylist shoots complaining customer
March 10, 2008 11:10am
I'd like to hear the hairdresser's side of the story. Although I'm not all that surprised, really - back when I was living in San Francisco, I was walking past a bus stop as a guy was running up, trying to catch the bus that was just pulling away. The bus driver either didn't see the guy running, or just didn't bother to stop, and the guy says to me "Man, *this* is why I need a gun!"
No Radios, Watches, Cameras, TVs, or Sewing Machines to China
March 4, 2008 4:16pm
Umm, isn't 100 RMB equivalent to like 13 bucks?
Video: Plastic Knuckledusters vs. Fruit and Vegetables
February 29, 2008 8:58am
Great, now the TSA will ban all plastic on planes. We'll be forced to undress, put on paper jumpsuits, and board the plane dressed like that.
Home Depot customer detained by DC police for not showing receipt
February 28, 2008 11:26am
#21: actually, you technically haven't shoplifted anything until you leave the store. At least, that's the way my security guard friend here in Toronto explained it to me. So even if you're standing right at the door with unpaid-for goods, until you step outside you are technically still in the good. But that was at department stores where the cashiers are in the middle of the store, not at a place like Home Depot where the only way to get out of the place is to walk past a cashier.
Home Depot customer detained by DC police for not showing receipt
February 28, 2008 8:58am
Man, people love to get enraged around these parts (and by these parts, I mean "the internet"). Guy was a douche, refused to show his receipt, security guard went too far. Case closed. I just can't muster up the energy to be angry on behalf of somebody else who could have saved himself a whole lotta hassle just by taking 30 seconds to show his receipt, but I commend you guys for being up to the task.
UPDATE: Comcast paid for people to fill seats at FCC Net Neutrality hearing
February 26, 2008 12:13pm
Funny, I don't find it unbelievable at all. The ISPs find it in their best interest that net neutrality goes away, so of course they're going to be as sneaky as they can to make that happen.
Also, I just have to add how annoying I find it that the "Preview" comment feature takes you to a preview page that doesn't have a post link (in IE7, any way), and then when you go back the text is gone. Grrr.
Jackass sprays graffiti on glacier
February 26, 2008 12:10pm
What a douchebag. I went on a full day glacier climb back in May... Franz Josef is an absolutely gorgeous natural work of art, and the thought that some idiot would think it funny, or cool, or in any way a good idea to deface it with spraypaint is absolutely mindboggling.
Oh, and to #4 - the ice part of the glacier, sure, it'll be melted and washed away in a week or so. The rocks? Not so much, since the glacier is steadily receding.
Smoking ban workaround in bars: Hold "theater nights"
February 26, 2008 6:38am
I can never understand the complaints about smoking bans. Bar owners say that it will kill their business - as if smokers will suddenly stop going to bars if they can't smoke there? Hardly! The only thing that WILL kill a bar's business is if some owners use loopholes like this to edge out the competition. Of course, all smart owner will institute similar nights, and then everyone's back on even footing again.
As for the "You non-smokers don't like it? Don't go to those bars!" - that's the most ridiculous argument out there. If *every* bar is a smoking bar, we're suddenly discriminating against NON-smokers. At least at a non-smoking bar, smokers can go outside to smoke.
Saudis set to execute illiterate, beaten woman for "witchcraft"
February 22, 2008 5:56am
This isn't really a big surprise to me. People who want to read about how insane things are for women in the Kingdom of Saud should read Jean P. Sasson's "Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia". It's rather frightening the conditions under which women live over there.
Video: Tex Avery's Television of Tomorrow (1953)
February 21, 2008 10:37am
I *swear* I saw that cartoon as a kid in the 80's. I distinctly remember the "variety of programming" joke. Man, Tex Avery is awesome.
Commerce Dept docs: Cheney and oil execs decided to take Iraq's oil in spring 2001
February 21, 2008 10:19am
I'm suffering from outrage fatigue. I can't muster up the energy to even get annoyed about this - we know that the Bush camp had already considered invading Iraq... so what does this non-news tell us? "Based on the documents we've seen, and how much they don't want us to see the rest of the confidential info from these meetings, it MUST mean that... they wanted to invade Iraq!" Well... duh.
Bush administration wants Europeans' family details, the right to put armed officials on European planes, and a pre-approval for European visitors
February 20, 2008 9:59am
Wow. This is just awesome. "If you don't do this, we'll have to start requiring visas for you to enter our country" - except, wait, isn't pre-approval before buying your ticket exactly the same thing??
Tear-free onion engineered
February 6, 2008 11:13am
Man... I have to say I hate seeing the word "orientated" being used there. Why can't the rest of the world just use "oriented" like a normal person??
Sound waves snuff fire
January 28, 2008 11:17am
If I recall from the Mythbusters episode though, they had to use crazy huge speakers, and extremely high volumes to put out the fires. So great, you've put out the fire in the space station, but now your astronaut's heads have exploded.
Waiters use nodding trick to boost restaurant tabs
January 28, 2008 11:16am
Over the phone? How exactly does that work? Was Sullivan testing at hotels with videophones? This is ridiculous.
Books that make you dumb: chart
January 25, 2008 12:51pm
Next project: hobbies that make you dumb. Then music that makes you dumb. You can pull all kinds of random things on Facebook and correlate them with average SAT scores.
JaseZone's social networking chain-letter
January 24, 2008 1:46pm
Was it actually the site that did it? Or some random weirdo?
Greasemonkey script to mute specific users in Boing Boing comment threads
January 16, 2008 12:27pm
I don't read enough comment threads on here to find this useful... but in general, my time on the net has learned me that there are certain individuals out there who aren't out there to spread their opinion and be valuable members of the internet society, but rather they prefer to stir shit up and be all-around cockfaces. I like being able to ignore those people when I need to, and pretend like they don't exist. It makes me feel better about the human condition. However, it's not always that useful, since these trolls inevitably garner responses, and then the responses are visible (and nonsensical, due to the original post being hidden). So it's an imperfect system.
Movie mogul's answer to downloading: PSAs by Shia LaBeouf
January 15, 2008 6:30am
Oh yeah... I wish I could've been a fly on the wall in that meeting...
"Ok, so who do the kids these days respect? Somebody they think is cool? Who's on the cover of all those teen magazines?"
"Brad Pitt?"
"George Clooney?"
"No, you idiots, somebody young, and hip!"
"Shia LaBeouf?"
"Brilliant!"
I mean... I guess if they're trying to get 13 year old girls to stop pirating... Shia's a good choice. Somehow, I don't think it's going to really impact the rest of the pirating demographic.
Dublin city council cancels free citywide WiFi: "Illegal under Euro law"
January 11, 2008 12:36pm
The key point for me, which seems to be ignored, is the "as well as not financially possible" aspect.
From Nazi collaborator to Fortune 500 - companies that got rich on the Reich
January 8, 2008 7:27am
So, as I understand it, the problem here is that Germany didn't dismantle all its companies that helped in the war effort, right? No? What, exactly, IS the point then?
High heels: tottery killers (infographic)
January 7, 2008 11:48am
Funnily enough, my fiancée's chiropractor just told her on Friday that high heels don't really do any damage, provided you know how to walk in them properly. Now I don't know WHO to believe - random unattributed infographic posted on the net, or quack doctor!!
Mike Huckabee congratulates Canada on its "national igloo"
January 7, 2008 11:44am
Rick Mercer is awesome. He's Canada's Jon Stewart. Although I still like Stewart better.
Topless woman in park used as bait in police arrest
January 2, 2008 12:45pm
Wow, that's awesome. It might not be entrapment (if she wasn't a police officer) but she asked him to take his penis out (according to the summary) so, at the very least, she should be charged as an accessory.
TSA to punish fliers for facecrime
January 2, 2008 7:23am
Wow... Fear, anger, surprise or contempt - not like those are common facial expressions while waiting in a security line at an airport. Why not add in tiredness? Terrorists up all night making bombs and what have you.
Canadian DMCA rally/celebration in Toronto next Tuesday
December 14, 2007 7:34am
Rajio (#1) - that was going to be my exact comment. Yes, I understand that the hippie kids that organize these things are probably in school, don't have jobs, and can just show up at any time anywhere to protest. And for most of their causes, I'm perfectly fine with that because I couldn't give a rat's ass. This is something that actually interests me though, and they organize it on a weekday. Hrmph.
Rogers ISP of Canada breaks into your browsing session to tell you off for using the net too much
December 11, 2007 12:22pm
I use my Primus VOIP box over my Rogers net connection almost every day. No problems at all.
MoveOn to Facebook: stop violating user privacy
November 21, 2007 8:59am
Indeed - I don't understand the problem here. There's a metric shit-ton of facebook apps that share all KINDS of personal information with your friends list... but first, you have to add the app, and second, you have to add people to your friends list for them to see it. So you've technically approved the sharing of this information TWICE.
First Firefox 3 Beta ready for download
November 20, 2007 11:24am
As long as FFox 3 doesn't end up using 400mb of memory after leaving it open for a few days, I'll be happy.
JK Rowling sues to stop Potter reference book from being published

Man, since when has a corporation in this day and age given a single flying frack about fair use??

Maybe they accidentally put in a height of 4'0? That would result in a BMI of 25.6, which is technically overweight. Or maybe the Wii fit board was broken, as mentioned, or maybe it's just a bug. But man... what a hilarious article. Does anybody really take the Daily Mail seriously though?
