Universal Music: it's illegal to throw away the promo CD we sent you without your permission
April 9, 2008 10:26am
If you mail the unwanted promo CD back to the record company, would they sue themselves for "receiving illegally distributed material"? Would the world collapse into a giant suck-hole of legal idiocy?
Why do I get the feeling that these RIAA proclamations are being generated by lawyers watching a chimpanzee in a suit throwing its own poo at law books (my apologies to all chimpanzees). Whatever it lands on they use to make these bizarre proclamations.
Skeptic giggles on Indian national TV as mystic totally fails to curse him to death
March 25, 2008 10:16am
My mojo is so strong that I *guarantee* that anyone I curse will eventually end up deceased. Someday. Possibly waaay in the future.
On a side note if the skeptic dies of a heart attack or stroke or anything in the next few months or so, will the tantrick be charged with murder or will he deny it was his doing?

Wow, ok. If it's you're time to go, can you really think of a more spectacular way to do it? In the afterlife-
"What did you die from?"
"Heart attack"
"Car accident"
"Stroke"
"Flying stingray"

Terrorist watchlist screws up lives of innocents

If it's unconstitutional and criminal harrassment, have there been any lawsuits declaring such? It seems like it would be a slam-dunk in front of any judge. Unless of course the gubmint pulls out the tired "State Secret! State Secret!" to hide behind...

#26: "At the end of the day, security should be able to quickly and easily discern things like this from real threats"
So true, so true. But remember the parable about the fox and the scorpion. You can't be surprised when the scorpion stings you. TSA is as TSA does until it is gutting from the inside. Carrying something like this qualifies one as a Douche of the highest order and the people caught behind them in the held-up security lines should be able to apply a beatdown.

Does anyone else get the absurdity of some simian security guard making the determination that a doctors note is needed in order to pass (None Shall Pass!)? What qualifies them to make that call? Do any of these chimps have any medical training?

While I don't think it's any government's job to decide what someone's name should or shouldn't be, I have to shake my head when I hear someone name their child some ridiculous name. They will have to live with the name until they can legally change it. Way to set your kid up for playground punishment!

Nope, my post was much more simplistic. I was just noting the funny in telling coyotes how to tweak their operation in order to once again fly under the radar. No grandiose statements on immigration or security.

Cloverfield's visual gaffe -- stuff movie sf usually gets wrong
January 24, 2008 11:28am
the Other michael- I expect you are referring to a quiet crowd vs. a loud one. Time and place for everything.
I don't go to a movie theater wanting to hear Fratboy's low-IQ opinion three rows back designed to make his friends laugh. But I suppose that's my fault for wanting to see it on opening day rather than waiting a few...

"Mistakes burst the bubble. They wake me up from the dream, sometimes with an unpleasant jolt. Even tiny mistakes do this."
I don't know about you, but from my own experience (and everyone else's I have talked to) it wasn't small mistakes that took me out of the movie. It was the a-holes in the theater that feel the need to share with the rest of the class. I.e. getting loudly upset when the test screen came up, thinking something went wrong with the film. Or getting loudly upset with the ending, expecting a tidy happy ending I suppose.
It's thing like that that ruin the immersion much more than slip-ups in details. Or it could be that I hate people. Strike that- people in theaters. Nah- people in theaters who won't STFU when it goes dark.

Healthy 29 year old man dies after police tase him
January 18, 2008 10:05am
"As far as blaming someone, I blame the uncooperative man. You're supposed to do what the police orders you to do in an emergency situation, such as an automobile accident. It just sucked for him that he died."
I take it you have never been in nor seen the result of an auto accident where even a minor head injury can produce altered level of consciousness (ALOC). Either this office was poorly trained as a first responder (he was responding to a traffic accident, wasn't he?) or he was a trigger-happy douche who relies on his taser to "incapacitate now, sort it out later". As stated above, even a small head injury or even heart trauma from chest impact can cause ALOC in the PATIENT.

"He said no one in Minneapolis has died directly from a Taser... ...The next year, another Minneapolis man with heart disease and hypertension died from a heart attack after he was shot with a Taser."
HA! What tortured logic. That's like saying no one ever died from cyanide poisoning, they died from cellular asphyxiation.
McDonald's UK CEO: kids are fat because of video games
January 11, 2008 2:34pm
I don't think any one thing can be held up and proclaimed "this is the problem". People eating more, people not exercising as much = fatties. McD is not going to win many arguments on the nutrition value of its food though. And, as a firefighter I have to add that I have worked a small firey plane crash that was inaccessible for a few days- the smell was the same as any McD. I can't go in one without throwing up a little in my mouth.

Heh, I would love the day when the religious majority stop acting like they are persecuted in the U.S. Of course, isn't that a classic Republican tactic?

How dare you make me take the side if Walmart... I look at it like this- say you hire a photographer to document your child's birthday party. Typically the photographer would own the negs and would charge you for prints unless your contract states otherwise. Then the you and the photographer have a falling out for whatever reason. You didn't buy enough, were rude, whatever. He then opens up sale of your child's birthday photos to specifically the people you wouldn't want to have them- let your mind ponder that.
Not a lawyer, but I don't think that any jury would be ok with that. Add to that Walmart's bottomless legal fund...
