There's some naked kids in there. If he took those pictures today, he would be behind bars.
History is strange. We're going backwards.
Smoking ban workaround in bars: Hold "theater nights"
February 25, 2008 11:10pm
I remember going to alternative/goth clubs in San Francisco in the late 80s and early 90s. Smoke-filled dens filled with people drinking, smoking, getting high, dancing, passing out, making out, sometimes even having sex in the cavernous rooms with music blaring. I had so much fun getting wasted, smoking a cig when I wanted, meeting interesting girls. I would drink a little too much and then go vegetate in the back with other people who had done the same. Then get up and back out and start all over. My god it was fun.
Today the clubs are antiseptic simulacrums of themselves. Pitiful. I feel sorrow for the kids of today not having experienced total freedom indoors. Now, if you stand in the wrong place, 3 meatheads will pounce on you and kick you the fuck out. Draconian.
Objectivism in Bioshock
February 15, 2008 4:23pm
He won't let his son play Grand Theft Auto, but he'll let him play Bioshock, where you can set female nurses on fire and then fling them into electrified water and watch their flailing bodies scream and die. Good call Doc!
N.B. I love both games.

As someone who might get a disc replacement soon, this story horrifies me. This woman should be shot. And what the hell are funeral directors selling bodies for? Isn't that illegal?
Grandmother arrested at McDonald's drive-thru for not pulling car forward
January 24, 2008 2:00pm
Officer: "Could you pull forward a foot so everybody can get by?"
Woman: "I'm not movin you bastard...McDonalds told me to wait here so I'm waiting here. Get back in your car pig"
(If you can't pull forward a foot when a police asks you, should you be behind the wheel of an automobile?)

I noticed this last year. My BT downloads for TV shows went down to 80 kBps. I researched on the internet and turned on encryption in Azureus. My downloads now get 700-900 kBps. But uploading and maintaining a good ration is a problem.
Turn on encryption!

There are about 15 legal card rooms in the Bay Area. So, obviously the gambling is not the problem. It's that the local government isn't getting any of the nut.

Land grab case in Boulder incites anger and protests
January 10, 2008 12:13am
I wish I had known this as a kid.
I used to go to several vacant fields and make forts and have rock fights and later, drink and smoke weed. I made a lot more use of the land than the owners did--that is until they built on it. And that area is now Silicon Valley! I could have been a billionaire.

I live in San Francisco and we have a HUGE homeless problem. I know several homeless people and they don't go to shelters because they have strict rules. Show up by a certain time, no ins-and-outs, lights out, no drinking/drugs...
They are starting to provide rooms to the homeless with no drinking/drug use prohibitions. As long as they don't fight and don't crap in the corner, they can stay and drink or do drugs. I forgot what they called this.... But it seems to work. The homeless people chill and drink some beers and retire to their rooms for the hard stuff. At least they're off the street. The several homeless people I've known all died. It's a very hard life. They were older guys and they aged rapidly in just a few years. "Picture of Dorian Grey" rapidly.
Being homeless is basically a slow death sentence.
Woman asked to leave Walmart after staying 72 hours

@ Noen,
You were homeless in Minnesota? Damn, I didn't even know Minn. had homeless people. I figured they would die in winter. It gets kind of cold in SF but nothing like Minnesota and I always wonder how the homeless can stand it. (I guess in fact, they don't. I've known several homeless guys in SF and they don't live long. They all died several years after I began to know them. Being homeless is a slow death sentence.)
Thanks for the advice, Xenu. I'll stick to Target in Colma.

I live in San Francisco and, seeing as how we don't have a Wal-Mart, and are probably not getting one any time soon, I've never been inside one. Isn't that kind of strange? People think I'm being elitist when I say that but if there was one near me I would go. I've just never had the luxury of shopping at Wal-mart.
Arnold's Fables: What Koko Wants
December 21, 2007 5:56pm
It seems to me that Koko can demand whatever the hell he wants. If the Foundation says to take off your top to satisfy Koko, then the Foundation is guilty of sexual harassment.
So, "None of the above" was the correct answer.
How the UK government deals with a broken light bulb

My mom told me she and many other kids used to play with mercury. Hell, some folk remedies in Latin America require ingestion of mercury.
While it is a good idea we don't play with it anymore and it is not freely available, evacuating a school building because someone broke a mercury thermometer is way overkill. It's a tempest in teapot, signifying nothing.

How it feels to die

I saw the terrorist-head-cut-off and it will haunt me for the rest of my life. I wish I hadn't seen it. (The horror of the gurgles as sporadic bursts of "Allah Akbar" could be heard. Man. Gives me the willies just thinking about it.)
I'm going to watch Teresa's chaser.

There were also some Aussies who turned onto a goat trail at the behest of their GPS. Their sedan weathered it nicely though, after a few hair-raising close calls and sheer drop-offs with no rails in the middle of the night.

The article says he took a piss down the shaft while he had the doors propped open. You can kind of see it.
Man, what an ordeal.
Then, when he gets someone on the intercom it's a security guard asking "What are you doing in there?"
He rightly replies "Get me the FUCK OUT OF HERE."
