Thanks for posting this....good to see old friends working hard in the dust while we're soaking up more favorable climates away from the playa.

Some years the art has blown me away....I went and volunteered for the Artery team with LadyBee for years because it had such a profound impact on my interactive work. Next year we're looking forward to building the most interesting structure in Black Rock City....after a year off.

I tell my husband to wear his utilikilt thru security. He likes doing a little ballerina pirouette for the TSA and when his kilt's buttons set off the sensors he flashes them. That usually ends it quickly.

DPW builds Black Rock City like any other department of public works. They lay out streets, help install lightposts and signs, take care of trash and other city management issues. It takes a special breed of volunteer to handle DPW work for many weeks out in the harsh dusty desert, hence the apocalyptic costuming....bandanas, hats and googles are the necessary uniform.

I met my handsome husband when he was a DPW volunteer.....mmmmmm.....yummy volunteers.

We have built a ton of these in our backyard too! We grabbed some sweet $3 canisters from IKEA for new styles and we use pretty much any old glass vase we find, adding a little solar panel to the top. I'll post photos soon.

The two artists from Boston who worked under the Comedy contract for ATHF picked up a technique that many of us had played with thanks to videos put out by GRL. The Glitch in Boston and many other art teams around the world have picked up great tools and techniques from GRL....good to see a documentary coming soon.
