UK teen faces prosecution for sign calling Scientology a "dangerous cult"

May 21, 2008 12:47pm

The distinction between Scientology and religion is that they charge money for enlightenment (as a core belief, not as a misinterpretation of their texts), believe it's acceptable to destroy dissenting individuals, and are outrageously libelous, believing that they can own ideas.

American Christianity may be morally oppressive, but only a tiny ( Islam has a history of being violent, but they also have a history of allowing conquered cultures freedom of religion and custom, as long as they obeyed Shari'a in public.

Also, do not make the pampered first-worlder mistake of conflating the moral authoritarianism and superiority complexes of private citizens with oppression.
Having someone call you a fag and tell you you'll burn in hellfire is not oppression. Hurtful, but it isn't oppression if you can leave.
Being locked in a room with little food or water for the "Sunshine Rundown" is oppression, and in Lisa McPherson's case, it was also premeditated murder.

Microsoft and NBC enforce the nonexistent Broadcast Flag, WTF?!

May 17, 2008 12:31am

I was just talking about this possibility with a couple of friends this evening, and now it's on BoingBoing in tangible screenshot format.

My boyfriend thinks that Apple will be less likely to go along with broadcast flags, and he may be right. Regardless, it's the potential for it to happen that I don't appreciate.

We postulated that if this is to go widespread and be the norm, there will probably be a software version of the blue and beige boxes of yore to work around it, and maybe even darker hacker magic to unlock premium channels and other such restricted content that is harder to obtain for free as a consumer in the analog world.

Grand Theft Are You Fcking Kidding Me

April 30, 2008 10:50pm

I am really disappointed in BoingBoing today. First, there was the vitriol-filled rant against Mac Geniuses at Apple stores on BBGagdets (full disclosure: i'm a mac specialist, who, incidentally, is not a douchebag or a twat.), which I was kind of shocked to see on BB anywhere.

Now, BB is posting an ad-hominem argument against feminists and people that don't like to think of their fellow men and women as animals.

Please don't slide downhile, BoingBoing. You are the best blog. =(

Snitch-chips embedded in UK school's uniforms

England gets scarier everyday. It's odd how they can so easily ignore the slow drip of fascism into their lives. o.O
