One-click site to tell Amazon that you don't want Audible DRM

June 14, 2008 11:03am

Here's a response I got back from Amazon when I expressed my desire to see them release audiobooks in MP3 format:

Audible is DRM agnostic -- our primary goal is to offer a great customer experience. Audiobooks purchased on Audible.com can be played on over 600 AudibleReady devices, including Kindles, iPods and most other MP3 players, Tom Toms and other GPS devices, Sonos and other in-home systems, and all PCs and Macs. Unlike DRM-free MP3 music files
designed for songs, audiobook files must deliver a unique multi-hour listening experience. Customers have recognized and appreciated Audible's unique listening experience since the company's inception in 1997. Audible is committed to maintaining and improving the features that drive this experience.

Audible recently announced that it is working to provide the option of DRM-free spoken word audio titles on Audible.com for content owners who prefer this method and are committed to working with Audible to maintain a great customer experience.

Thanks for your interest in Amazon.com and Audible.

DHS spends millions on bus kill-switches to stop Osama bin Laden from reenacting the movie "Speed"

June 10, 2008 12:12pm

From the portion not quoted here:

"If we just stop the bus suddenly, maybe he sets off a bomb and kills 50 people," said Gary Pard, DeCamp's vice president of operations. "It's our objective to give a terrorist time to rethink their position."

Glad to see Gary Pard is helping to establish acceptable losses for bus travelers.

Indiana Jones -- a pinko?

This feels like a sly attempt at making the movie much more interesting and thought-provoking than it actually was.

All of this feels like the equivalent of a restaurant's patrons clapping their hands when a waiter drops a tray of dishes. ;)

We the aforesigned....in order to form a more perfect BoingBoing...must deestablish just this.

Haunting photos of a rotting wooden coaster

I think BoingBoing should stand by its philosophy and stop plugging photo exhibits that aren't released under CreativeCommons. And 800x600 to boot? Please. I'd rather see nothing than to be teased with circa 1998-sized pictures like those. :(

Haunted Mansion trufans party after hours in Disneyland

Tip: For these (and most all LA Weekly) pictures, if you view a picture path, replace the integer shown near the end (e.g. the "56" in 1979112.56.jpg) with 32 and you'll get a larger size shot of the image in question. This works especially well for pictures in portrait orientation. Cheers!

More Abu Ghraib torture photos

Just my hunch based on my own experience in the Army 15 years ago., but I think gavinkovite's got it right. Except for deciding our deployment positions and general missions, officers played only a tiny role in the day-to-day military field operations of the Army unit to which I was attached. We lower enlisted folk (including minor Non-Commissioned Officers) pretty much had the run of 98% of the deployed activities. I'm betting that if any military officers (O1's or 02's) were complicit, it was in a "don't ask, don't tell" way. My guess would be that the highest this kind of stuff went was with someone in a role of platoon sergeant (E-6, E-7). *shrugs*

Short video makes fun of to-do list mania

February 14, 2008 5:40pm

This easily reminded me of my favorite Kids in the Hall skit: "Things To Do."

Kevin: "Things to do, things to do today. Got a big day ahead of me, several things to do. Gotta' keep on top of my life, gotta' keep on top of my life. I have seven things to do. Number one: Banking. Number two: Pick up dry cleaning. [He walks into an old lady and knocks her down.] Okay, ya just knocked over an old lady, keep moving, ya got seven things to do...."

The whole skit can be found here: :)

Foreboding ads featuring the World Trade Center

Those are great pictures, but my favorite weird WTC picture is the one featured on the October, 1976 cover of Sesame Street magazine...shown here.

Dave Hill is a very funny guy (videos)

He seems inspired by Trigger Happy TV's Dom Joly.
