NYTimes.com hand-codes its HTML
April 30, 2008 1:48pm
two things I find myself wanting that I'm missing in TextPad: autocomplete (mostly for CSS & JS), and a pop-up function reference, mostly for PHP & JS - e.g. reminding me if the function is (haystack, needle) vs. (needle, haystack). any recommendations?

Ron English billboard mods in L.A.
April 29, 2008 7:17am
are you sure the erected billboard isn't photoshopped? it might not matter either way, as it's arguable more people will see and be affected by the photo than by the real thing (if it exists). conversely, does it carry more psychological weight in person (like seeing any art in person), the combined total of which might outweigh the online version's impact? who can say.

I think I'd prefer an article titled "Cheap and tiny submicros rounded up and shot".

anybody else think this looked comically useless? his weight was on his leg, arm, side and back - meanwhile his shoulders were nicely padded but barely touched the ground.

US customs bar fashionista druggie writer for "moral turpitude"
March 21, 2008 9:15am
#13, Agies: Here's the thing. The article says "he said his only conviction stemmed from an arrest 25 years ago for possession of amphetamine sulfate, for which he was given a conditional discharge." That implies that he could be forgetting about other convictions, intentionally or not - and why should the AP bother doing some background research? It would be so unlike them, they're too busy digging through Hilary's White House schedule anyway (omg omg she was eating while Bill was getting a blowjob!!!). But if it was true, is one drug conviction from 1983 enough justification to deny grounds? And I think we've seen enough Miami Vice to know the "we know you're a heroin addict, we know you're a crack addict, we know you're involved in prostitution" line is the oldest trick in the book and doesn't mean a thing. The idea of this person intentionally comitting a crime while on a fricking book tour is as ludicrous as denying him entrance on grounds of "moral turpitude".

Thanks for the clarification Mark. It's clear there's nothing malevolent going on, and it doesn't make a dent in my opinion of you and BB - but you could not have picked a worse company to associate with. I myself have grown quite fond of XP (I'm going to use it, like a favorite t-shirt, until nothing but translucent threads remain - then I'm switching to Ubuntu), but Microsoft's insides are Pure Evil, no two ways about it.

@ #2 - "I was under the impression that some of Mccay's works like Nemo had entered the public domain. Is there any reason they cannot be released as a free e-book onto sites like Gutenberg?"
I own 3 of the "Complete Little Nemo" hardcover series; if what you say is true, I'd be willing to scan/upload them in full. EVERYBODY should see these drawings, they're stunning and totally unique.

"If they were archived with the original advertisements, as they aired, I'd be keen. Old commercials are fun. But not loaded up with NEW ads."
yep; if only commercials from 10, even 5 years ago were worth anything... (to Viacom)

"impressive accomplishment" I dunno... maybe for having enough RAM to load that much audio data into their audio program? before using the equivalent of photoshop's mozaic filter? of course, this is conceptual art and should be judged thusly, not on process/technical difficulty.
