Craftsman's $8600 everything toolkit

Snap-On:
US (fractional)
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/tools.asp?Group_ID=2294
(More than 1000 pieces, $7253)
Metric add-on
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=&item_ID=66988&group_ID=2299&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog
(More than 175 pieces, $6259)
Plus, you need somewhere to store all that stuff
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=storage&item_ID=79150&group_ID=20685&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog
$18,395 (but it's a whole truck, basically)
(wow. And though I believe that Snap-On is definitely superior, Mac Tools are an acceptable, less expensive alternative. Craftsman are... um, available at Sears ... their only real advantage.)
When I was a mechanic, a very experienced, older mechanic mentor gave sage advice: Buy good tools, you'll soon forget how much you paid for them, they're a joy every time you use them, and they'll last forever. Buy cheap tools, and you'll soon forget how much you paid for them, hate them every time you use them, and you'll re-buy them frequently.

Unboxing an Apple IIc

You guys are making me feel old. My first computer was an Apple ][. Not //+, not //e, not //c.
But if you added the AppleSoft ROM expansion card, it was pretty much like a //+.
"Rebore-Zit" Bit for Enlarging Wire-Filled Holes
January 22, 2008 10:19am
What a terrific tool. If you've ever had the unenviable task of adding a wire to an existing wire-run, this tool on a long flexible bit extension would be terrific!
(consider you have one coax going through the wall to your TV. You want to add another MVPD (add Satellite?) or add a two-tuner device. You have existing holes, existing wire, want to add another wire through those holes but the holes aren't big enough for another wire).
Alas, this seems to be a short bit (not 36" anyhow) and I've already solved my problem in another way.
Interview with AT&T's "Filter the Internet" Exec
January 21, 2008 1:30pm
This post doesn't point it out, but others have: AT&T gets a safe harbor from various federal (and likely state) laws because it acts as a neutral carrier without treating some information carried differently because of what it says. By actually inspecting and exercising some control over content, it is possible or likely that they've sailed out of the safe harbor (IANAL). At the very least, whether the ship is still in the harbor or not, they've opened themselves up to debate (um, court) as to whether the various safe harbors apply.
Somewhere there was a big battle between AT&T lawyers-concerned-with-liability and AT&T-lawyers-involved-in-content-licensing...
Lawyer claims he owns "cyberlawyer" -- actual cyberlawyers laugh and laugh

1200 G Street NW, Suite 800 is a Regus location (www.regus.com). Regus rents single offices (such as the one I reside at) as well as 'virtual offices' which provide a mailing address, but no physical presence (i.e., you could work from your home 100% of the time, but have an address of 1200 G Street NW Suite 800).
This seems to be a firm of one lawyer (or a very small number).
Why it's good to leave your WiFi open
January 14, 2008 4:40pm
I run an open network in part for the reasons that Cory and Bruce point out.
Plus, it's an interesting IT exercise. I have a good firewall (astaro) and the AP is on the DMZ. I'd never really get an opportunity to run a three-netted firewall without something useful on the DMZ.
I can monitor usage (well, at least it get logged), and if a cop knocked on my door about child porn, I'd be able to find the MAC address of the offender from firewall logs (DHCP logs). If I were inclined, there's a way to limit the bandwidth on the DMZ or prioritize non-DMZ traffic, or etc.
Gibson Robot Guitar
January 14, 2008 4:30pm
This makes me want to try to pick up guitar again. Long ago, I tried real hard to play, but though I could get the fingering right (with some practice), I'm tone deaf enough to be completely unable to tune.
