Help me set up an iMac G3 as a streaming music station

August 28, 2008 8:23am

I've been using an ibook to control the itunes on my music server. I have tried many remote control solutions. Desktop sharing (VNC apps, Remote Desktop) works, but seems like a memory hog; it slows my computers way down. The app linked above, iTunes Remote, works fine, but I don't like the clunky interface. My favorite is TuneConnect. It's free, the developer was exceptionally helpful when I was having connection issues, it's got an itunes like interface, and it pulls album art and shows it on the remote side.

the only catch could be that tuneconnect requires leopard (osx 10.4). can that old g3 imac run leopard?

Stuart Kauffman: Call the universe God

May 12, 2008 7:11pm

we are the universe's way of feeling itself, as are all other living things.

the name with which you choose to call this experience doesn't matter. many words have different meanings to different people.

what matters is that we have a consensus about these facts:
- we exist.
- others exist.
- acceptance of the other is mandatory (you don't have to live with them, just don't bother or kill them).
- all suffering should be minimized (otherwise, what's the point?).
- the planet's living systems need preservation if we are to thrive.

my bible starts with this:
cultivate delight. otherwise, please kill yourself so that we can enjoy the show.

Shoes are bad for your feet? Vindicating the barefoot set

April 24, 2008 7:05am

Add Nike to the list of companies that have produced a barefoot shoe.

Nike's version, called the 'Free,' is the only Nike shoe made that I get evangelically excited to preach about. It's the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn, and I've worn a lot of Nikes (I once worked for the company, and grew up with a parent that worked for them).

It caused a stir within Nike when it was released because it contradicts the rest of Nike's footwear theory. Almost an admission of the fallibility of the rest of their footwear lines.

Nike released the Free as a trainer. Not designed to be worn as a street shoe, but designed to be trained in to make your feet stronger. I bought my first pair to train in, but they were so comfortable that I didn't take them off when I was done running in them.

I've worn through three pairs of them as street shoes.

The barefoot model makes sense to me. Shoes with too much support and cushioning are like a crutch. If you wear them all the time, your body will become dependent on them.

Super-premium theater chain in the US to sell $35 movie tickets

March 28, 2008 7:02am

Do any of the current super-premium theaters offer a restroom at the back of each screening room with piped in audio from the movie?

I've always wanted this improvement. Especially at the theaters that serve beer. I would drink more beer if I didn't have to worry about getting up and missing part of the movie to empty my bladder. And while I don't drink those bathtubs of soda that are sold in theaters, I can't imagine it's easy to hold in one of those for very long.

The restrooms could even have one-way mirror windows so that you can see the movie as you are washing your hands, or as the boys pee at a urinal.

Debate around brain enhancement drugs

March 10, 2008 8:26am

Everything we put into our bodies has an effect on our state of being. Everything. Different bodies respond differently to the same material. Only you know which ones work for you. My doctor definitely does not. My government definitely does not.

Teach self empowerment. Teach people to make their own smart choices. Teach people to recognize the effects of different substances on their beings. Teach caution.

Pay attention to your own trip and let me explore mine as I wish.

Ruhlman Defends the Percolator

I used many of the glass Chemex drip cones in my coffee drinking past (many because they break with the slightest of bumps). I liked the making process and the coffee was clean in the mouth but rich tasting. They use Chemex brand filters which are thicker, chemistry lab grade filters.

I also liked them as a beautiful kitchen design object.

Chocolate Biodiesel Experience

February 4, 2008 8:28am

The smell of biodiesel is not as pleasant as it's proponents would have you believe. It reeks like burning cooking oil, and feels thick in your head.

Is there a way to reduce the stink? I want to believe in the potential of biodiesel, but I don't want the world to smell like Burger King.

Old ad suggests caffeine triggers child abuse

January 28, 2008 12:52pm

The sentiment of the ad rings true to my experience.

After 15 years of a twice a day coffee habit I gave up caffeine two months ago, and I haven't missed it. I wasn't beating the kids, I was just a prick.

It's an unpopular view, but for some people caffeine is a much stronger drug than we'd like to admit.

I was suffering from anxiety. Just stupid terror that made me feel like life sucked. And to illustrate just how stupid I am, I've known for years that coffee tweaks my head in an unpleasant direction. But I didn't connect that it was coloring my ENTIRE life experience. For the past two months I've been calm and focused and feeling strong.

My brother is going through anxiety hell these days. His psychiatrist has him on antideps and antianxiety meds. His psychiatrist encourages him to drink lots of coffee to help with the sedating effects of the drugs. Hah! Drink coffee, get anxious, take drugs to combat anxiety, drink more coffee. But of course, I'm no psychiatrist, so I obviously know nothing.

So exciting to see what kind of positive impact the global spread of Starbucks culture will bring to humanity! More terror! More war! As long as it doesn't impinge on our right to bear french presses it's fine with me.

The Other Monstrous "Clover," a $20k Coffee Brewing Vacuum Siphon

January 24, 2008 9:02am

I've sampled a few cups of coffee from Stumptown Coffee's Clovers here in Portland, OR.

They tasted great. None of the gritty heavy bodied-ness of french press, but fuller flavor than drip process due to the grounds steeping in the water. But like a french press each cup is made to order so you can select your bean, which at Stumptown is a great way to try a cup of the $30/lb wonderbean without buying a pound.

And it's fun to watch the machine work.

Talking About AT&T's Internet Filtering on AT&T's The Hugh Thompson Show

January 21, 2008 10:15pm

No doubt it was a courageous act Joel, but the attention your getting here is from the choir, we already know what evils AT&T are pushing. I wonder if you didn't burn a bridge prematurely in the sense that now other potential interviewers may be hesitant to let you stand back up on the soap box, thus limiting your potential audience.

Clive Thompson on the Death of Audiophilia

#21:

Ha! I woke up this morning thinking that I'm going to buy a slide projector and start collecting old slides from second hand stores. Slides rule. And so do canoes. And I'm not your dad.

There will always be people in every generation that are interested in quality rather than convenience. And they'll seek it out and geek out on it.

Music producers mixing for MP3

December 29, 2007 7:52am

"we're happy to sacrifice fidelity for ease of use, flexibility and low-cost... Designing for that, as opposed to lamenting it -- is a damned good and realistic thing to do."

Not sure that I can agree with this blanket statement. What about HD video Cory?

People are tossing aside their old TV's to make room for the new increased fidelity of HD.

Story: SR-71 Pilots Show Off

November 21, 2007 8:21am

They said the few errant missile detonations they were able to observe from the cockpit looked like implosions rather than explosions. This was due to the great speed at which the jet was hurling away from the exploding missile.

Huh? Cause they were flying faster than the speed of ... light?

Top 100 private contractors in US wars

November 21, 2007 8:15am

20.4 billion dollars to unidentified foreign entities.

Sure wish there was a paper trail on that money. Anyone have any estimates/guesstimates on how it breaks down?

"Topping KBR’s haul, 20.4 billion dollars was awarded for services from “unidentified foreign entities” not identified in US government contracts.

The Center for Public Integrity, which says it is a non-partisan group that investigates major public issues, said it was seeking more information on those contracts through the Freedom of Information Act.

The group said that 31 of the contractors on the top 100 list were foreign, including 12 from Turkey."

I'd also like an explanation for the deletion of my comment. It was considerate and kind. No disrespect was made of Mark. I expressed my opinion, in support of those readers whose opinions were censored by you (or Mark, or another editor).

I'm not a troll, I felt strongly about the conversation that was happening in this thread.

What gives?

I'm loosing a lot of boingboing love here this morning...
