The PowerPC binaries have little to do with it, the bulk of Mail came from the various localisations. The reductions also come from resolution independent vector graphics, as well as more shared resources.

@DNL2BA: Except that the licenses on most typefaces do not allow for distribution, preventing embedding.

We don't have Amazon MP3 store yet. If it's not DRM free on iTunes or on eMusic, your only option is bit torrent.

Apple's way or the highway: iPhone SDK agreement specifically forbids real-time route guidance
June 11, 2008 10:50am
The MIMvista program (Medical Imaging Viewer) they showcased in the WWDC keynote would seem to violate this clause of the SDK.The program demoed was not for emergency use, it is basically a data access program. What the agreement is talking about is an application with, for instance, direct control of a defibrillator. Do you really think Apple would have demoed an application which broke the agreement?

My dog has no problems with my Roomba. He was worried by it at first, but now mostly ignores it. The only time it bothers him is if it runs into him.
Apple's way or the highway: iPhone SDK agreement specifically forbids real-time route guidance
June 11, 2008 4:11am
Is it possible that Apple's restriction is not on the development of navigation software per se, but on the creation of navigation software which works by spamming an Apple maps server via API calls?I suspect not. The iPhone already has rudimentary route guidance via the Maps application, and navigation software which used the map functions in the SDK would essentially be a recreation of that. Third party software would have to write a new their own code to improve upon the Maps application, and would probably therefore not use the Google maps database, as the Maps application does. I think this policy is to block legal action, if an iPhone were somehow implicated in an accident.
What would you do if you ended up in the year 1000?

Teaching germ theory would be in the category of things that would get you burned at the stake.

Anti-kid modifications to public steps
May 30, 2008 4:45am
Our British society is quickly becoming very child-phobic. At the same time as being terrified of strangers, in case they turn out to be paedophiles, we also victimise teenagers, who are merely loitering in public, because they have nothing else to do. Will building these loiter proof steps help? No, it will make the teenagers hang out somewhere else.

Mac stability seems very variable between hardware. I have a now extremely underpowered Core solo Mac mini. Although applications often freeze, they usually recover, and I only encounter a system crashing error every few months. Slow but reliable.

Video about quest to get Dalai Lama to carry Olympic torch
February 29, 2008 1:12pm
All question of olympic corruption aside... I have a very hard time imagining the chinese government going along with this plan, given their view of the man in question. It's not their torch, I don't think they have any control over it until it enters China. For the record, I think this is a great idea. I'd love to see this happen.

Just FYI, we have very, very few toll roads here. The only two I know of are the M6 toll road, and the Dartmouth bridge and tunnel.
