Mazda destroys 4,703 shiny new cars worth $100 million

April 29, 2008 5:20pm

#27: And who's to say that many more lives were not saved by keeping the cars off the road? Especially after reading the Wired article, it seems like a Good Thing they got scrapped.

Also, it's not Mazda's fault at all that an inexperienced climber loaded down with weight decided to stand on a winch preparing to climb down the side of a ship with his safety line as yet unhooked at the behest of a team leader who didn't want to call a Coast Guard chopper to get them off safely. That'd be Darwin Award material if it was Johnson himself who made the choice to climb and not the team leader.

Hans Reiser guilty of rm wife

What was the original 'tasteless' headline?

And Rob, the dissenters from the BoingBoing Position put up with crap every day from everybody in the comments section - it'd be nice to see the posters themselves do the same.

Who really gives a shit about MP3s killing the album?

April 26, 2008 6:48pm

Audaxaxon:

If it's your music and your tagging, then tag the genres however you want to! It's not like it's an epic pain to fire up a tagging program, hit Ctrl+A, and change the whole Genre at once if needed. Saying that tagging is too difficult is more a display of your laziness than anything else.

If you already HAVE your stuff organized by directory, just use software that allows you to break the directory structure into tag pieces automatically - and vice versa. It's automated and works great. Whenever I get a new album, it is directorized thus, allowing me to reconstruct the major tags from the directory structure and vice versa. There is life outside iTunes/Winamp.

The whole tagging of individual files is pretty much standardized nowadays, and facilitates the transfer of individual files with meaningful metadata. It's not hard at all to update them, nor is it hard to maintain them properly. I fail to see the point of any of your whining, as pretty much any non-flash player save Rockbox'd ones use tags anyways and it is exceedingly simple to maintain both tags and meaningful directorization.

I had to think about that one, Salad Days, and then the mental images came back to me.

I swear to you, I shall have my revenge!

Nvidia: CPU dead, long live the GPU

April 25, 2008 11:53am

I'm going with the poster manipulation theory with the image ...

Now that the GPU does most graphics work, we can use the CPU to concentrate on things like physics and other such calculations. Also, I dare say a good CPU helps me run some of the math and engineering software I use a lot more than the GPU?

Maybe the CPU isn't a factor in gaming anymore, but it's far from gone in nonleisure tasks.

Measure your TPS with the Final Say Penis Measuring Kit

April 22, 2008 5:39pm

Actually, Skep, this would give a pretty reasonable estimate of actual cubic displacement, a.k.a. volume:

Girth is the circumference of the penis - divide by pi to get the diameter, then use the equation (pi*D^2)/4 to get the area and multiply by length.

Voila, the estimated volume of your penis is in hand!

#1, #7: Giving the real value, however, isn't 'clever' nor 'witty.' It's much more exciting to make Subtle Commentary than report the exact reality.

For those who care, the real price in Euros is closer to 316,375 give or take fluctuations in the exchange rate.

I think I prefer the old perception of what now would be like than what now actually is ._.

Mechanical wondercycle exercisulator of 1931

April 6, 2008 4:57pm

@2, 16: I love how we're apparently not allowed to post a quote from an old document - in this case 1931 - unless we ensure that any obsolete terms that might be offensive nowadays are properly changed.

If you're so sensitive merely seeing a word sets you off regardless of the context, maybe you should just restrict your viewing to properly-filtered modern writing.

@1: Don't worry, robotics will catch up soon enough, then your dreams of a truly emotionless and expendable military will come true. Until then, acknowledge that they are indeed people, even if you hate them, and mayhaps like to show their own internal unity. The images may be loaded with machismo, but when you go out expecting to get shot at or bombed, you have to try to get yourself pumped up. At least we are beyond the Vietnam-era ostracization of soldiers and are focusing instead of the policymakers.

@3: That's actually an Ordnance branch symbol with subunits painted next to it - the Pac-Man visage was added later with white paint. Horray for subversion, especially on the part of the bomb disposal types :)

Flintstones-style pedal car gets its day in court

April 3, 2008 12:35pm

@4: It's not like regular bicyclists have to follow special rules while on the road in order to help protect them from other motorists, let alone not being in the middle of the road with quicker traffic. Oh, wait ...

I'm not certain whether or not the guy broke any laws, but outside of his artistic purpose, he's just another guy on the road making life painful for the rest of us, similar to the 'ultramilers' who drive extremely unsafely to improve their MPG.

US Peso deathwatch: Thai tailors switch to advertising in Euros

The solution is not to bother posting if you disagree with the party line of the site, and just keep watching for the stories you would like to see. It's not hard to figure the political angle of the site and it's posters/moderators, and thus it is not hard to ignore them. If you post anyways, expect vilification, as there are many people who DO agree with the site and are more than willing to defend it.

Conversely, Teresa and Noen, just because someone might disagree with you doesn't mean they are unrealistic astroturfers: that sort of thinking is more often expressed by those on the losing side of an argument and makes you look extremely bad to those who are not already supporters of your view. Especially to Noen, one could express your sentiment to apply to the actual bloggers of BoingBoing and other sites themselves - but of course if it was in YOUR favor it would be a brigade for positive change and not a small minority clamoring for attention, right? ;)

As far as the actual post is concerned: I don't have too much of an opinion, as I haven't had the opportunity to travel. I'm inclined to believe Lilricky's explanation about seasonal advertisements, but I wouldn't actually know unless I went. Due to classes and the requisite finances and time constraints, I can't up and travel. That's probably a good thing too - no matter my efforts, I'd just get shuffled off as the ugly American and looked down upon by elitist foreigners who would like nothing more than to spit upon the ground I walk on. Or is that a stereotype that doesn't hold true all the time as well? Sometimes on the Internet, it's hard to tell :D

XO laptop -- a green miracle of energy efficiency: Video

February 25, 2008 6:04am

I applaud the XO and its goals; I do wish the thing was widely available as I know many who would prefer such a device over the usual laptop fare. The endstate of providing computers to low-income areas is admirable ...

Also, however, I would not like to run SolidWorks/COSMOS or similar on it like I do my current 'power-guzzling' laptop (which is essentially a desktop in a 15.4" case -.-). Mayhaps using the 'all' modifier was going a bit far ;)

Lastly, you can drop your elitist holier-than-thou routine ElSmiley. Yes, we all know about how it helps children worldwide. Does that preclude commentary on how it should affect us, given that this interaction with us is the point of the post?
