Forbes Traveler on travel scams
August 18, 2008 8:35pm
That first scam wouldn't work on me. If there's one thing I've learned from video games, anytime someone drops loot and a second guys picks it up, you should kill the second guy and take the loot for yourself.
Comcast tech calls grandpa a crook and disconnects him
August 10, 2008 7:13pm
My Comcast story begins and ends when I tried to sign up. I was told it would be at least three weeks, because there was still service on my cable line, and I couldn't sign up until it expired.
I thanked the guy for his help and then signed up with AT&T instead.
When I wrote a letter to Comcast's CEO explaining why they had lost my business, I got not one but TWO apologizes over the next two days, offering to connect their service immediately.
AT&T sucks just as much (if not more) but at least they hooked me up quickly and I didn't have to write a letter to the CEO.

Bill Gates' 2003 flame email about Moviemaker

Most of Microsoft's applications are pretty good. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
But Windows? Pile of crap. There's just no excuse for the absurd level of complexity. Not even their own programmers can handle it.
Banshee free/open music player for GNU/Linux turns 1.0
June 23, 2008 6:55pm
I find Banshee and Rhythmbox a lot easier to use than Amarok, but Amarok definitely has the features you need.
Still, I prefer good ol' XMMS. It looks exactly like Winamp 2.0 and even supports the same kewl skinz.

Woman sues over harmful panties
June 20, 2008 9:54pm
Knowing Victoria's Secret, the panties were badly made in the first place. More people should sue over these things until manufacturer's take on some responsibility for the quality of their own progress.
More power to her, I say.

June 10, 2008 12:22pm
In San Francisco, the hybrid buses have a kill switch that rowdy passengers flip.
Why this switch exists, and why it was in an area accessible to passengers, remains a mystery to those with common sense.

Big Buck Bunny: CC-licensed animated short made with free/open animation tool Blender

Infrared LEDs make you invisible to CCTV cameras
February 21, 2008 6:52am
There was something like this at SIGGRAPH last summer. A series of infared LEDs scrolled messages across a black monolith. You could only see the message by pulling out your camera (cell phone camers worked fine) and watching it on your screen.
But the LEDs certainly weren't bright enough to overwhelm the camera.

January 8, 2008 12:36am
Saw these at SIGGRAPH '07. A lot of the display models were broken. I thought they felt cheap (duh) especially the keyboard. The plastic was not sturdy.
And the software was incredibly confusing.
The OLPC people might be able to make these on the cheap but what will it cost to fix them, provide upgrades, etc.?
