Poring over inflation with the Consumer Price Index in hand

May 6, 2008 8:57pm

Rent is the only thing guaranteed to rise more than the cost of anything else you buy on a monthly basis. Which have you experienced more often? A yearly rent hike of $50 a month or a yearly pay raise of $50 a month?

And yeah, I'd like to see the "real" employment statistics: meaning "full-time, 40 hours a week" vs "languishing in a temp job where my company considers 30 hours to be full time".

Webby Awards announced

May 6, 2008 8:47pm

The majority of the sites seemed to corporate (i.e., business or "for profit" sites). Shame they don't have an award for regular joes or jills who just come up with a great concept and run with it -- instead of cashing in.

Wesabe's new recommendation service finds better competitors for the businesses you patronize

April 25, 2008 12:13am

Yeah, what Batu said! And seriously, if you need to pay a service to tell you "stay out of the trendy stores(like the Mall), develop you own style and shop for it at cheap places..."

Well, if that's the case, I need to be writing a how-to and so do a lot of other folks. Are people really that ignorant?

Shoes are bad for your feet? Vindicating the barefoot set

April 25, 2008 12:08am

It amuses me to see so many responses on shoe issues (as compared with silence on political ones). Used to work for a shoe store and learned waaay too much about the musculature and biology of the foot. For example:

#1 issue: Plantar Fascitis? You DON'T need $300 orthotics. Spend the money (more than $40) to get a pair of shoes with built-in arch supports. Or else spend the $10 on a pair of Dr Scholl's Arch Supports, available at Walmart or other discount department stores.

#2 issue: "ugly toes" Your toes need to spread out to support your weight naturally. Save the pointy-toe dress up shoes for occasional dressy use, not every day. Boxy-toe sneakers for casual use are good for you!

I could go on but...

Yay for the Compubeaver! I have a deep respect for those who go for the ridiculous.

Will Eisner's magazine for Army mechanics

April 22, 2008 6:16pm

These were great little mags! Jokey as they might be, they did give you lasting visuals to help you remember how to take care of stuff.

(As for the wild goose chases, I was an AFKN broadcaster. We used to send newbs out looking for cans of white balance, packets of black burst and boxes of color bars. Good times.)

Steampunk "gothic pirate spaceship" watch

April 15, 2008 5:24pm

When it comes to "steampunk", I'd be a LOT more impressed if the objects actually worked using "steampunk" technology.

Unlike this pricey watch, most of them seem to be just everyday objects slapped together and sprayed with bronze paint.

Is Fred and Sharon's movie production business real or performance art?

March 25, 2008 6:20pm

Why all the analysis? Can't we just appreciate it for what it is, regardless of whether it's "legit" or just performance art? In any case, it's brilliantly bad entertainment!

Starbucks' formula has changed, let us count the (three) ways.

Learn to make your own coffee, the way you like it.

Or else just hand over your glands/wallets. Some corporation will do it for you.

Now you, too, can engage in warrantless wiretapping!

February 22, 2008 5:07pm

I used to work at a place where we had a bunch of police & emergency scanners all going at once, and those picked up a LOT of cell phone conversations. Some of those folks would have just DIED if they knew we were listening in on their porn calls.

Senate votes to immunize telecoms over domestic spying

February 12, 2008 11:27pm

Forget that old "ban same-sex marriage" amendment (which was mostly used to rile up voters).

What we need is a constitutional amendment safeguarding our right to be left the hell alone.

That includes the right to be anonymous and post comments using a pseudonym.

King Corn/Count Smokula

This ep forced a bad joke into my head:
Q: What do vegetarian zombies eat?
A: GRAIIINNNNS....

Yeah, sorry. Had to.
