Optimism?
Well yeah that was before we became a fearful, claustrophobic, goalless and soulless society busy avoiding responsiblity by electing snarky war mongering frat boys and bitching about taxes...
We have no great goals as we slip into a terrified lassitude
Mars? That costs TAX dollars! Moon? Not until we're done with the pillage of Iraq, thank you very much.

There are two sides -
One is a well paid propaganda of the China political agenda enabled by corporate media and big business that carefuly overlooks any evils done by China while selling this fiction of non political Olympics and not incidently selling a shitload of slave labor logo merchandise...
I don't really think BB has to recap the avalanche of puerile pro-China press, leave it to Faux

About those business models for writers:
Writers I know who are savvy are putting "donation jars" on the sites with their stories
Some come right out and say: "It costs 'X dollars' for the next update/chapter" some just say "whatever you think its worth"
Some are using lulu in addidtion depending...
The fact is the 'dead tree guys' are mired in a failed model with DRM and silly ass licenses and going no where fast -- the new guys are bypassing 'New York' to go straight to the customer and the cash without passing GO

I think Bruce Schneier (sp) did a cost/benefit of the whole "nine one one vote Republican TSA security theatre" and the imputed cost of lost time and lost productivity was astronomical!
Check his website -- it was his or linked through him

House votes against telcom immunity for illegal wiretapping
March 15, 2008 8:47pm

Let's not overlook recent events, like elctions, I guarantee Congress pays attention:
"Democrat Bill Foster was elected to Congress in Denny Hastert's long-time, bright red district in Illinois."
Foster ran opposing the WAR and Teleco immunity.
Congress can count votes and Foster winning after running the "harboring terrorists" gauntlet of the standar Righ wing 'nine one one meme' had to have a positive effect on this issue

House votes against telcom immunity for illegal wiretapping
March 15, 2008 3:40pm
Greetings
The 'good guys' are the ones like Pelosi who have grown a set about rejecting immunity..
Cynicism and "they're all alike" allows the right to win, keep holding them accountable and tell them when they do good!
The bill has a long road to travel before it ever sees Dubya's desk. House Senate Conference committe, then if they agree to language re-vote by both chambers then off to Cheney-ville
Like I said, best outcome would be impasse, assuming house comnferees stick to the language they passed
Often rules require them not to accept lanhguage explicitly rejected, in house case that might include teleco immunity
Lets hope for an impasse

One million bilked in Chinese ant farming scheme
January 12, 2008 3:22pm
Greetings
This tells you all you need to know about the scam:
"...Instead of siding with Yilishen's victims -- mostly poor farmers, construction workers and the unemployed -- the government has blocked Internet postings and ordered reporters off the story, ant farmers say. Attorneys in the nation's capital have been discouraged from representing any of them, according to the website of the Beijing Municipal Lawyers Assn.
Most of the victims say they invested with Yilishen because of its close ties with the government and endorsements by prominent officials. Company officials frequently appeared with senior government officials. The company advertised extensively on state television and received a hard-to-get marketing permit...."
With the explicit and implicit endorsement of the GOV even dead ants can be sold...
Or a war with Iraq or a speedboat attack by Iran!?!
