Graduation present: a clean carbon slate

May 9, 2008 9:33am

Folks - be careful of this "carbon offset" stuff. One of the most frequently used methods of carbon offset is to plant large eucalyptus farms in developing nations. Impact? Large hectares are taken from productive farmland to sell to carbon offsetters. This is a travesty! Do a google on +"carbon offset" +eucalyptus and educate yourself.

Food wars are coming, and they are going to be caused by those who believe in global warming enough to take farmland for biofuel, carbon offsets, and preventing developing nations from using pesticides and tractors to produce enough food.

"Green" will soon be seen as another imperialist plot..

Ben Stein: "science leads you to killing people"

May 2, 2008 8:37am

I think the movie and the ID reasoning behind it is awful as well.

But let us be clear: religion falls in WAY last place compared to "scientific socialism" as far as death and killing are concerned. Mao and Stalin and Pol Pot dwarf to a mere speck the Inquisition and Crusades and Witch Hunts.

The only reason we cite religion is that they ought to know better. And they should!

Stepping into slightly more murky waters is the science of "choice" and whether you consider the unborn "human" or not. If so, then scientific clinical choice/abortion takes the top position.

Citizen issues parking ticket to cop

April 23, 2008 1:35pm

A fine balance between appreciating the police dealing with the lowlifes and dregs of society, and remembering that they work for us. Liberals especially are so quick to point out how "enlightened" Europe is, and how we should make more of our laws like theirs. But in that, we forget that America is the only country where rights come to the citizen directly, not through the State. "We are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights..." is not how the EU is set up. Keeping cops on their toes is a good reminder to both of us. And, thank you to all law enforcement for the work you do for us.

Amnesty's Unsubscribe Me video reenacts CIA waterboarding torture

April 23, 2008 9:25am

Look, half of the news teams of every TV and cable networks have done "waterboarding" to see what it is like. It has no lasting effects, and if the next thing out of the mouth of the terrorist after the water is, "7:30... at the train station!" ?

The art of persuasion is not fun to watch, and brutes do tend to take jobs where they get to exercise authority and inflict pain. So one must be careful. But given the alternatives and the nature of our enemy - I am not persuaded by this film.

Ayahuasca church spreads into UK

April 16, 2008 4:08pm

From the article: "So, is this a Church we should be welcoming or is it just an excuse for people to take drugs? Is Santo Daime a serious religion and is ayahuasca really so important to its adherents?"

1. No.
2. An excuse to take drugs.
3. No
4. No

Sunspots don't cause global warming, people do

April 4, 2008 8:30am

The solar-activity deniers reveal their fear that the global warming hoax is found out. Critics are called "morons" and rhetorically linked to creationists, etc. No science, just name calling.

But such is the game when science is co-opted by politicians and entertainers. Just wait until women realize what the cost of fixing "global warming" will be. Namely: back to the kitchen, girls. Yes, yes, men should take a more active role in housework, and yes, women are just as capable and effective in the workplace. But let's just imagine what is likely to happen if we can't use electricity to wash and dry our clothes, dishes, diapers, and home.

Turn off the AC, and by the sickly green light of those poisonous mercury CFL bulbs - take care of the kids and house. We fully expect that the laws against driving and lighting and heating will be waived for the workplace. Good luck!

Montana Governor explains why Real ID sucks

March 10, 2008 8:50am

I like the way this guy sounds. He sounds like a conservative. My suspicion is that he is really just anti-Bush. As soon as Hillary or Zerobama gets elected and wants to force some idiocy on the American people, he will be right there crowing about how it is for our own good.

I hope I'm wrong, but I've never seen principled behavior on the Left.

Censorware that blocks BB mentioned in Denver Post piece on filtered WiFi at DIA

Engineering approach to global climate change

March 4, 2008 11:11am

Come on - put money on it! Any devastation and/or collapses will come as a result of the mandates being suggested. As economies collapse, and African and Asian children start dying in hordes due to lack of energy and air conditioning and transportation - then you'll see horrors. All due to the myth of man-made climate change.

I tossed the old one.

Tiny Tim on Ironside

Bill to ban restaurants serving obese people

February 5, 2008 11:43am

This is simply ageism. As one ages, you are going to gain about 2 pounds a year. This is not due to McDonalds, or office jobs, or TV. Look at any pictures or photos from ages gone by. This is what happens when we age, unless you make being slim a hobby or passion, instead of woodworking or birdwatching.

The BMI and other anti-fat metrics favor the young, and I suspect this is its origins. Don't get me wrong. I think the world will be better when all the Boomers die off - but this is Logans Run stuff: Kill the old people.

Analyzing Bush based on his favorite painting

February 1, 2008 11:15am

Bush is Frodo. Leading small band which must take steps to avert a great evil. All along the way, they run into former allies and traditional friends - who put up very emotional arguments as to why they should not get involved, it isn't their fight, you're being too hasty, or it would interrupt the diplomacy they have been trying to establish with the bad guys.

I have all kinds of axes to grind with President Bush - but he does seem to understand the threat of radical Islam.

I admire him, and am with him charging up that hill.

Life After People, new documentary

January 18, 2008 12:11pm

The real suicidal, self-loathing side of the environmentalist comes out. Man as disease. And some "emotional moments" about Chernobyl. As if comets, volcanoes, and other blind forces haven't been dramatically more impactful. There is no "balance" gang. Just storms and recovery. The best thing that ever happened to a tree is a piano, a baseball bat, or a piece of paper.

Are cellphones killing bee colonies?

January 18, 2008 10:35am

A myth:

“I very nearly don’t know what to say about this issue,” Tew said in the newsletter. “The publicity on this subject has exceeded any science supporting a causative agent. Giving it a new name and saying that it is worse than previous outbreaks have given the condition an emergency status that has elicited what I have called ‘electronic hysteria.’”

“I’m not saying it isn’t serious,” Tew said Tuesday. “It’s like the flu. If you have it, it’s serious, and if you don’t have it, you don’t want it.”

Vanishing Of The Bees documentary

January 18, 2008 10:27am

It's largely a myth by the doom-and-gloom, mankind-is-killing-the-planet crowd. The losses are either within normal range, or are associated with beekeeping practices known to be bad. The narrative of "bad mankind" is so attractive to some, that it warps perception as surely as racial prejudice.
