Painted gaming miniatures

December 28, 2007 5:19am

I've got something like 1000 of GW's LOTR miniatures (about half painted). I never even get to play the damn game, but painting the mins is the real fun for me....

Thesixtyone: Music discovery game connects indies and fans

jmiao:

So, in essence, their game's architecture is a "Prisoner's Dilemma" with no fixed rules/rewards. I think an examination of the "common sense" strategies employed by people playing such game would reveal that most people will act conservatively. Risky behavior in such a game (waging much to gain much) is rarely a chosen strategy.

What such results predict is illustrated handily by the top vote-getters on the site. The majority of the top ten are major-label backed artists who have already gained significant attention via the publicity channels of these corporations. The safe choices. Safe because they are already pre-approved by social (read: corporate media) consensus.

It seems to me that these safe "consensus" choices will only get more attractive to users as the user base grows.

Hmm, seems to me like a laboratory experiment in rewarded groupthink. I mean, after all, in such a system you are punished for liking what others do not. Heck, you're punished for just liking something new (that others haven't listened to yet). Even if that punishment/reward is quite insubstantial.

Western Digital network drives crippled -- no serving any multimedia files

December 6, 2007 12:45pm

It's far cheaper just to by a bare drive and stick it in a sub-100 dollar PC (running OSS), than to buy one of these over-priced 9and now we know) crippled POSes. Especially if you're spending your Company's money.

No <strike> tag? tsk. ;)

Science Fiction Writers of America reinstates E-Piracy Committee -- new name, same chairman

November 30, 2007 4:30am

These days, I only ever read new fiction if it's cc (or other open) licensed and the occasional known-quantity, small-press author (see: John Shirley). If I can manage 12 pieces of fiction a year (along with non-fiction and occupational reading), then I'm doing good. So, the cc stuff that is released usually keeps my queue full.

CASH music, a platform for Radiohead-style digital distribution that makes fans into stake-holders

November 28, 2007 1:17am

This is more like it. Let's hope people will participate and give this a chance to succeed.

Universal Music CEO: Record industry can't tell when geeks are lying to us about technology

November 27, 2007 4:43am

And the music-distribution conglomerates wonder why they're so irrelevant in music today....

Mindwebs: Free old science fiction radio plays

November 13, 2007 7:33am

ARGH! Wel, there goes any chance for listening to music this week. ;) It's makes me want to haul out my (water damaged but readable) 40s/50s Amazing Science Fiction!

Jack LaLanne's Physical Conditioning for Intellivision

November 12, 2007 4:19pm

If it's a cassette, then this would be for the Mattel Aquarius add-on for the Intellivision.

Because, I find it hard to believe that my complete collection of Intellivision-related gear would be missing a cassette interface and I'm pretty sure there was never an Arcadia Supercharger made for the Intellivision. :)

Dungeons & Dragons 4.0 Makes Remote Pen-and-Paper Play Easier

October 16, 2007 1:31pm

Well, I think the key statement there was "as a D&D insider subscriber".

Honestly, They're not going to get me to rent an application from them to play D&D. Add to that: Many of the people I do/would play with remotely can hardly afford a monthly fee that will, no doubt, be roughly the same as a commercial MMO, $15/Month.

It'd be great if it was a one-time-purchase app, but there are plenty of good RPGs out there that don't want to bleed me dry.

Winamp Lives!

September 14, 2007 9:44am

I couldn't live without WinAmp. It's the primary reason I haven't completely given up on Windows in favor of OS X.

Now, understand, I've got A LOT of albums online, some 2500+ at last count. Even if ITunes were to give me a list of by albumn and not artist or track, I've found that looking at a text-list that size pretty much has the same effect on me that the coffee aisle did on Robin Williams in "Moscow On The Hudson", that is its overwhelming.

But, ah, the beauty of WinAmp plugins. Specifically, the "AlbumList" plugin. Which alllows me not only to sort my albums by Artists then year, but will display all my albums by cover art.

By displaying my album collection as images, I've found it's much easier to locate music I want. I couldn't live without it. ITunes just doesn't provide a remotely similar, easy-to-use feature.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Department burn down a house and kill puppy over traffic citations

September 10, 2007 2:26pm

You know, I think this video pretty much sums up the respect (or lack thereof) Maricopa County residents have for Sheriff Jo(k)e.

Brazil set to cripple TV with American DRM

September 9, 2007 4:16am

This is probably a good thing for most Brazilians. I mean, anything that drives consumers away from the authoritarian and overpriced delivery systems of the 20th century can only be good for consumers in the long run.

No friends yet.
