There seems to be an urban legend (myth?) concerning cow magnets improving gas mileage. I guess you're supposed to align them in a certain way along the fuel line which is supposed to rearrange the fuel molecules. OK - I have no idea really, but some good ol' boy told me all about it while watching me change my car battery in a parking lot. He swore by it, but I never tried it.

I think this would actually be a 'Zenker's diverticulum' which occurs in the esophagus rather than the larynx. Hard to understand why he was pouring wine into his lungs if that was the case. Anyway, this caught my attention, since it seemed similar to a story I read about someone having a Zenker's diverticulum. Read about it on Wikipedia, and then contemplate the resultant chronic halitosis.

Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie
February 18, 2008 6:38pm
I was afraid these guys would be from Ohio when I saw the pic. :) I've also heard a lot of stories from the Cambridge - Coshocton area. Here's a link to a map showing rough distribution of Ohio sightings from BFRO.net (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) http://www.bfro.net/AVEVID/MJM/Ohmap04.gif
Portsmouth would be roughly at bottom-center along the Ohio River, although this map didn't show any sightings from that area for some reason. Anyway, I believe 'em. Ohio was a virgin forest when the settlers first set eyes on it. In fact, it was at the center of the largest continuous, deciduous forest in North America.
I hope this film plays in an indy theater here in Columbus. Seeing it in Austin would be the only thing nicer.

Finally finished reading this last night (around 2am) Maybe I'll finally get some sleep. What a great read! I kept going on tangents, comparing it to the historical context, and I learned alot that I had never known about the era.
Now to make good on the offer Mike made - reading a free novel in exchange for submitting corrections. What OCR was used anyway? I'm curious why there are so many capital E's.
Mike, how do you want corrections handled or sent?

I'm pretty sure NOBODY prefers being called a Midget, as the term is no longer politically correct, and from what I understand, his condition is called pituitary dwarfism or primordial dwarfism. The most common type of dwarfism, wherein the limbs and skull are disproportionate, is achondroplasia. Hasn't anyone ever watched "Little People, Big World"?

When has the Guardian ever been known to exaggerate? Ha Ha This is a horrible occurrence, and although tempting, should not be conflated with the current rash of civil liberties violations. Children's Services everywhere in the US have been making tragic decisions for decades with no thought given to the Constitution let alone the public interest. And yes, this type of bureaucratic ineptitude, incivility and blundering are universal. I'm not saying this to defend or detract from the administration's copious missteps, but the New York CPS doesn't have a hotline to Dick Cheney's evil lair. They probably even vote Democratic for the most part. They deserve an apology from the Department and City of New York. We should get back to the many other real problems we have let get away from us. Just sayin'

What is turned on its head, exactly? I know that my grandmother is not African-American, but she worked in an Akron factory during the war. I also know that many African-American women did the same. This is not mutually exclusive. Nor is there any explanation for what the writer implies. To my knowledge, there has been no concerted effort to denigrate anyone's role in the war. All who served did so with distinction (Rosie, the Tuskegee Airmen, the 442nd, etc...) Recognizing that all strove equally for America, as Americans, was and remains, critical for the civil rights and feminist movements.
I could be entirely wrong, but if the post insinuates a blow against racism, it is tilting at windmills.

Topless woman in park used as bait in police arrest
January 4, 2008 12:51pm
@#65 Please read the article linked in #61...
She was NOT paid by CPD and therefore he was NOT entrapped, by legal definition. The only basis I see for trotting out the term "entrapment" was the quote from his defense attorney - not exactly a neutral party. The article Boing Boing links to goes on to talk about so-called entrapment methods in NYC which are controversial, but they are not related to this case. How could she be charged with public indecency as you suggest? She did not expose her genitalia. Whether she induced him to commit a crime is another matter. I don't know the statutes and I don't know how police or prosecutors could have built a case anyway. There is no audio and presumably only Mr. Garrison's word that she asked to see "it", though I don't doubt it from the context of the video. There just was no proof.
Topless woman in park used as bait in police arrest
January 3, 2008 10:43am
I had to register and comment after seeing this... I remember reading this article in the Dispatch back in November. The incident occurred in May, but apparently wasn't picked up until this went to court. He got a pretty good lawyer - Shamansky has represented OU football coach Frank Solich, Steelers' WR Santonio Holmes, and former Buckeye Maurice Clarett, among others (apparently I have football on the brain - he usually represents area politicians on DUI charges, but he also defended the highway shooter a couple years back). Anyway, I just wanted to point out some info that was missing from this post. Here is the original write-up:
Apparently she had been sunbathing for a few days at the front of the park and was getting a lot of attention from passing motorists on Greenlawn. The police asked her to move to the back of the park. She complied, but as another poster mentioned, Berliner is a huge sports complex, with access roads throughout. People were still driving by to ogle, including our hero. His attorney even alludes to this, saying "he sees her day after day". Not surprising, since the CFD training facility is right across the street.
Anyway, just wanted to give this background, as quite a few seem to be commenting about this as entrapment in which the woman was cooperating with police. Doesn't even matter - she did nothing illegal (being topless not a crime in Columbus) and he did (exposing genitals in public is). CPD probably has better things to do, but sex at parks is a problem here and other places, and the article suggests they were there to prevent that and not for this woman in particular.
As for the impression that Columbus is right-wing (#14), consider that we have one of the largest campuses in the country (tOSU), a large minority and gay/lesbian population, as well as a very low median age (32.4). We also stood in lines for hours to vote for Kerry in 2004. Please consider stopping in Columbus on one of your fly-overs, and check out German Village, the Brewery District, Victorian Village, Arena District or the Short North to see why Columbus is considered one of the best large cities to live, and a top arts destination.
