It was only in the 20th century that US governemnt soldiers started having better than the citizens typically used. Previously the trend ran the other way.

In the 18th century, many of the cannons used in battle were in fact privately held.

The wit and wisdom of Prince Philip

I was kinda amused by "If it doesn’t fart or eat hay, she isn’t interested." The rest were tripe and offal.

The modern steam turbine was first built in 1884, for reference.

Amsterdam currency exchangers won't take US dollars

March 18, 2008 12:14pm

"Who said anything about creating more money? That is a completly different topic. We are talking about the value that the dollar is exchanged at on the world market... inflationary money supply is a totally different issue. Stop with the strawman arguements already."

Some of that drop is related to the US no longer publishing how much money it is printed. It is an intrinsically related topic. For some reason markets think that means were printing a lot of money.

Pauldrye: "It wouldn't have been a steamship, not in 1923. The world's navies had been switching over to oil engines for some time before that."

Do steam turbines not count as steamships (serious question, genre)? Oil fired steam warships have been built at least into the 1980's. Nuclear quite recently.

Gas turbines are more popular now.

The main purpose of immunity is not about protecting the telcos from investigation. First and foremost it is about protecting the executive from investigation.

Alleged CD-bootlegger abandoned in solitary jail cell, left to drink own urine

March 12, 2008 12:24pm

"If this incident would have taken place in Illinois, New York, or California there wouldn't be this weird blame-the-state mentality."

If it happened in Illinois, people would have blamed the state, or at least the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. There is a high concentration of corrupt nepotist asshats there.

Debate around brain enhancement drugs

March 9, 2008 2:45pm

CUVTIXO, Adderal and Ritalin are schedule two controlled substances in the US. This is the same schedule that morphine, oxycodone, and hydromorphone are on. The cheapest opioid painkiller is methadone, also CII. The DEA keep a very close eye on all of the painkillers which are not adulterated with toxic NSAIDs (which kill 7,000 Americas each year).

These drugs all require a script, which is limited to a maximum of one month at a time etc.

$31 million worth of lost valuables on the TSA's watch

March 1, 2008 7:40am

If you absolutely must check luggage that you are worried about being stolen, check it with a gun. A starter pistol will do if you dont want a weapon, less legal hassles in many locales upon arrival.
