Survey: 14-24 year olds want to pay for their music but await the perfect service
June 17, 2008 11:01pm
I think Lala.com might have something going for them (I've been using their CD trading service thing for nearly the past 2 years). They're now doing this thing where you can listen to ANY song in full once (after that they turn into 30-sec clips), then buy the "web song" for 10¢ (which you can listen to unlimited times online, anywhere), or buy the full MP3 (no DRM) for 89¢ (79¢ if you already bought the web song).
I didn't think I'd use this much (I've never been a fan of online music services to begin with, aside from iTunes exclusives and obscure stuff on eMusic). But I've been giving full listens to albums over the past week I wouldn't have checked out otherwise - because of the "first play is free" option. It's better than Bittorrenting because the music is right there for you, ready to stream on first listen. If you're one of those "oh, I need to download and listen to it a few dozen times before I decide if I like it or not" people, then I guess something like this isn't for you. Me, I think one full listen of an album gives me a fairly good idea whether I want to pursue it further. I buy my music, but the kids can keep on justifying the reasons for their terabytes of pirated music. Whatever, I really don't care.
I hope Lala isn't another MP3.com disaster in the making though. They're still in Beta with this whole streaming-on-demand thing, so we'll see how it goes I guess. Hope more of the kiddies learn about it. All I know is I've streamed the new M83 album 10 times in a row today, thanks to Lala. :-)
Trail camera company offers million-dollar bounty for pictures of bigfoot

Yep Roye's right. My brother, a huge sportsman (unlike myself), built one of those motion camera thingies out of an old 35mm a few years ago. He used it to track deer, but it also picked up raccoons, squirrels, and even a cat! Fun stuff.

No, Scott Weiland is way cooler than this dude.
And I love my DS, but I'm totally not buying this.

Awesome. This reminds me of watching the old 'DTV' music videos on the Disney Channel back in the mid-Eighties.
I bet this Oz kid like Avalanches. :-)
Puma Disc Blaze Tetris sneakers are gorgeously awful

I have an actual pair of Puma Discs from 1992 that look way cooler than these. Neon green and aqua blue. The shoes are a half-size too small for me now, since I bought them at the tail end of my junior high growth spurt. I totally recommend 'em if you can pick up a pair! Comfy AND stylin'.

Florida school board approves McDonald's report-cards and school-bus audio ads
January 20, 2008 9:56pm
Come on, we all know blatant advertising in schools isn't anything new. Hey, remember Pizza Hut's Book It! program? Actually, I think it's still around. You were rewarded Pizza Hut pizzas if you read books. I think my school started doing this around 1990 (when I was in 4th grade). Before that I remember getting 'excellence certificates' from Shakey's Pizza, and attending McDonald's-sponsored events with ol' Ronald himself. In high school I probably plunked down a buck almost every day to get a Cherry Coke out of the vending machine.
But I also had great teachers and a quality education, so I don't see how junk food destroyed my youthful school days. If anything it made learning a bit more fun.
F'Real Gas Station Milkshake Machine

I tried one of these out at a Holiday station in Walker, MN in July '06 - but I hadn't seen another since then! I think I had a strawberry one. It seemed to be on par with a McDonald's shake - not bad, not amazing. BUT DEFINITELY THE FUTURE...

Bogus "tractor beam" video

I'm with #10/Brit - the way the objects move, it just seems to be a result of tipping the table (and room, and camera) allowing the untethered objects to slide (which stop when they hit the speaker). Old camera trick.
Notice how the camera shot is interrupted by that black title screen. This would be more convincing without that break.
Boing Boing tv: Ask "Simpsons" director David Silverman

Why are the Simpsons designs kept so strictly on-model nowadays? The characters always look so stiff and lifeless. Also, I miss the old grumpy Homer.

Seems like it was sometime in spring of 2001. I remember how hilarious it was seeing 'Goooooooooogle' on the bottom of the results page for the very first time.
