Eccentric dude puts lyrics to famous film scores (like Batman!)

July 17, 2008 8:16pm

One of my Goldentusk faves is the Indiana Jones rendition:

Especially the part where he dramatically intones, "Kill all the snaaaakes..."

It's not just the parodied music that's funny, it's the fitting visuals that add an extra dimension to the whole song-and-dance. :)

Devo sues McDonalds

June 29, 2008 11:42am

I'll merely add I'm thrilled with how 1-hit wonders were very common during the New Wave era, Devo's popularity continues to coast the waves of time. They've even spawned a next generation!

Speaking of, here's the obligatory connection between Devo and Disney (the topic of the last BB post):

Devo sues McDonalds

June 29, 2008 9:42am

At least it wasn't Fuddruckers, as featured with a somewhat-different name in Idiocracy!

Another contender would've been Mike Score's 80s hairstyle; but not as easy to geometrically model as the Devo hat.

Harpo Marx on the origin of the "Gookie"

June 28, 2008 10:28am

No one should confuse "gookie" with a certain racial slur. But I didn't know "gook" could also mean "caked-on makeup", which comes close to the feature facialism on show here:

Fan-made hip hop videos created with Sims: 10 Best

June 25, 2008 10:21pm

I'd like to see some done in Second Life! I continue to hold out hope that Wu-Tang Clan will perform inworld. Altho, we did get the genius of "The Little Newbie" from AlienHearts:

Traditional Lao music, remixed in random YouTube video

June 22, 2008 11:25am

Whoa, I'm familiar with some of this music from my youth! I used to hear it a lot in eating places too, and largely recall it being very melodic and catchy.

Notice how the beat at the beginning with the rez zap sounds very Kraftwerkian.

Somewhat related but more commercial and sung in English, I'm sure just about anyone who visited Thailand in the early 90s will recognize this:

I've wondered all these years if the production was influenced by Ace of Base.

Those goats aren't cute in the traditional sense, but they definitely made me sit up and take note!

World of World of Warcraft: the future of gaming

June 13, 2008 6:30am

+1 for Second Life

I thought this Onion clip was brilliantly done and delicious in its recursiveness. Now I'd like to see one, taken to extremes, with Zlad-like video feedback effects.

I always thought it's cute when the members of your would-be simulacrum had their own little games to play with, whether it's Barbie with a Game Boy or another game-within-a-game diversion.

Google News from a better world

And while not as happy, in our universe, there's this:

Google News from a better world

June 8, 2008 6:22am

This is brilliant — reminds me of what Michio Kaku said about parallel universes.

There's too much negative news nowadays, and that often mean that good news is underreported and hidden.

Some say, "Give the people want to hear!" but I think it's a repetitive cycle which is hard to break: you share more positivity and hope to people about the world they exist in, and they seek that out more, moving upwards.

Future of the Internet and How to Stop It -- CC licensed Jonathan Zittrain book about the danger the Internet faces

June 8, 2008 6:08am

A lot of people who aren't particularly technical don't want to innovate, they don't want to create — they want to consume and have something that works easily for them, right out of the box. So at least in the beginning, the closed, proprietary nature of the iPhone makes sense for them.

Nor do I think the iPhone and other Apple excellence would've arose if they had opened up more to open source, focus groups, more "cooks", etc. — which is not to discount benefits of the latter, but they both have their places in this world in a diverse market & economy.

I feel it's important to enlighten people who might not otherwise care about philosophies/movements like open source, so they're aware of these choices and can take action if they're interested.

So in that, a book with a provocative title like Zittrain's is a welcome addition. I haven't read it yet, but it gets me curious. :)

Funny breakfast cereal photoshopping contest

June 8, 2008 5:45am

Every time I see one of these cereal box rounds, I hope to gaze upon the cheery disposition of a "Porn Cops" box. Said spoonerismesque thing hasn't happened yet, but if *you* do it, let me know. I'd be delighted!

Big Buck Bunny: CC-licensed animated short made with free/open animation tool Blender

June 7, 2008 12:01pm

I thought the technical visuals here were amazing. Really well-animated, that's for sure. The characters were not really cute, tho (and perhaps that was the filmmakers' intention) — kinda felt like an anti-Pixar at points. :)

This is a testament to Blender, that's for sure. Hopefully it gets more people interested and aware of the goodness in open source; I wanted to use Blender awhile ago but found the UI quite frustrating and near-impregnable, alas.

Harajuku fashion gallery -- mind-bendingly awesome subculture

June 7, 2008 11:56am

Ack! Getting "I cannot connect to the ReviewPost database. [$php_errormsg]" messages right now. Hope it'll be open again soon.

Here's another intriguing phenomenon: fashions with these edgy flavors are being brought (in increasing amounts) into Second Life, both by actual Japanese and others worldwide who love the styles. One of the foremost shops is called Curious Kitties, and there are even a pair of default Second Life avatars titled "Harajuku".

Tinies are definitely a happy rage too! For example:

Astaire/Jacko mashup video: Smooth Criminal

May 27, 2008 8:12pm

Sweet vid! This is an amazingly catchy song and I like how a lot of the visuals worked in sync. Great editing — I wonder, was any time compression or expansion used?

Lego boulder threatens civilization. Update: ugh, "stealth" viral campaign.

May 26, 2008 4:27pm

I was highly entertained by the video in a sort of Barnum & Bailey humbug vibe — I wasn't so happy about the lame cover-up attempt; I saw this story posted in multiple other places but learned first @ Boing Boint that 'twas a fake. The ad company hurt themselves with an unkind reaction to the discovery.

But what the heck is up with the watermelon in this picture?

Painstakingly painted Megaman 2 bedroom walls

May 24, 2008 7:50pm

This is gorgeous — and one of my fave Mega Man 2 levels. One of the things I dreaded the most in this particular stage was the almost-constant line of spiked balls atop, because a single careless jump into them would mean... you die instantly with the signature "DOOOOM-DOOM-DOM!" sound. I also was afraid of the giant red fish that spewed out crustacean-things.

*has sudden flashback of throwing metal blades at Bubble Man himself, that fiend!*

Congrats on such a visual accomplishment, John! I need wonder, now: who's going to do the other 7 Robot Masters from that game? :)

Rotting futuristic Taiwanese housing project

May 24, 2008 7:46pm

There's something beautiful yet tragic about the bright colors contrasted with the decay. Looks like for all the cited futurism, there's a lot of wood and not enough (apparent) metal.

That's pretty nifty — I wonder if there's something like that for 3D virtual worlds.

Instant Action, the YouTube of 3D Gaming, coming to OS X soon

May 17, 2008 2:04pm

I love this sentence:

"Even lowly office computers, built to browse the web and munge a few spreadsheets, now have enough power to play 3D games — first-person shooters, racers, even flight simulators — that would have been state-of-the-art just a few years ago."

Incredible what power we have in our hands. And while we may still complain about some experiences being too slow today, imagine what all that will be like in a just a few years!

Funny Will Elder photo

Ha, what a wacky expression! Rubber-face, reminds me of Jim Carrey that way — Mechfish, that's intriguing, have a link to that video? I like Wallace and Gromit a lot.

frog Design's electronic facemask re-skins reality

May 16, 2008 6:29pm

Part of this "reality overlay" reminds me of this impressive Zune Arts animation:

It will only be a matter of time before someone commits a crime because a technologically-imposed hallucination showed someone something very different from what was really there, and they lashed out it.

But still, I'm optimistic about the data-usages of this, projecting useful info atop or near actual physical objects to learn more about them. Marketers will no doubt rush into the fray.

Vintage aviation hostess photos

There's a wonderful music video which relates to this; surprisingly, it's melodic drum 'n' bass. I recommend you watch Sub Focus' "Airplane" for more nostalgic visuals:

Hilarious money doodles

Next phase: make an animation out of a series of these. The "SPARTA" one, predictably, would do nicely.

60% of world's paintings come from one village in China

April 19, 2008 11:43am

I do agree the headline needs to be clarified: even if true and substantiated, there's a BIG difference between "60% of world's paintings" and "60% of world's *reproduction* paintings" — as prolific as these talented chaps may be!

Second Life on an Apple ][+
