Newscast from a robot-dominated future -- Onion video

March 21, 2008 9:16am

Cory, this isn't "the Onion's latest video segment." This particular video aired weeks ago, on January 9, 2008. They've put out a dozen or so segments since this one.

Speaking of which, if you have a TiVo with an internet connection, you can subscribe to The Onion's video clips and see them when they first come out. That's how I first saw this one.

Anton LaVey's Black House now condos

January 30, 2008 7:44pm

I had a girlfriend in college who said when she was a kid, her parents were personal friends of Mr. LaVey. She said she fondly remembered LaVey's pet lion. I only half believed it, but I guess it's true.

TSA to punish fliers for facecrime

January 2, 2008 6:58am

@Adventure Books of Seattle:

I think the TSA is bad largely because I HAVE flown out of Tel Aviv. The Israelis have a system that makes sense, works, and is efficient. The US system fails on all three counts.

It's a sad state of affairs, but it was easier for me (an American citizen) in 2007 to fly from Tel Aviv to Atlanta, than it was to fly from Kansas City to Omaha. And not only was it easier on me personally, but I also felt significantly safer.

So I applaud this so-called "facecrime" approach. If the US can do it as well as the Israelis, it's a good thing. But that's a mighty big "if" since - as others have pointed out - Israeli security is done by real professionals and not Wal-Mart rejects.

Pancakes in a pressurized can

I'm pretty sure I saw this stuff mentioned on Treehugger.com a few months back. As you can imagine, they weren't very impressed.

Driver blames pterodactyl for crashing into pole

December 31, 2007 1:19pm

I spent some time on the reservation with a Navajo teenager named Bobby a few years back. We were driving around the incredibly remote area his family lives, and came across some "Anasazi" ruins in a canyon.

I asked him why he thought the Anasazi died out. He told me with firm conviction that their pottery designs had become too complex, and so the pterodactyls came down and killed them. Considering this happened only a few hundred years ago, pterodactyls must have lived much more recently than 65 million years ago.

RIP: Netscape Navigator (1994-2008)

December 28, 2007 8:13pm

I loved Netscape Navigator. Best browser available for a few years at least. I even actually paid for it! That's right, I'm the only person I know who did, but I felt that it was so good that I wanted to help support the developers who made it. I was a good shareware user. Turns out forces much larger than I could imagine would enter the story not longer after my check was cashed.

In honor of Netscape, I uploaded my original electronic receipt for Netscape Communicator 4, as a reminder for future generations that Netscape tried to sell their software to consumers for a while:

TSA is as unpopular as the IRS -- UPDATED

December 24, 2007 6:53am

@ZUZU: I'm not sure I get your point. Are you saying that the US government will never be as good as Israel at detecting terrorists until they start supporting air terror themselves?

TSA is as unpopular as the IRS -- UPDATED

December 23, 2007 3:23pm

I traveled to Israel recently for work. If there's anyone on this planet that knows how to deal with airline terrorism, it's probably the Israelis. All their neighbors want to kill them and they've been in the at war for the past 50 years. And I would rather go through Israeli airport security 10 times than go through US airport security once.

On my way out of the country, there were a couple of little old American ladies in front of me in the (relatively short) security line. The security agent asked them a few questions, and looked over their papers. One of the women then realized she was carrying a bottle of water, and sheepishly apologized to the security agent: "I'm so sorry, I forgot about my water. I'll throw it away." The agent laughed and replied, "No, don't worry about it. We don't do things like that here." The unspoken message was, "Here in the real war on terror, we know that a bottle of water isn't going to kill anyone."

No friends yet.
