More Abu Ghraib torture photos
February 29, 2008 12:29am
If my heart could vomit it would be doing so right now. The picture shown here is the least gruesome of the bunch. Clicking through to the article and playing the video shows you the horror of the situation. I'm heartsick, soulsick, just plain sick and frankly ashamed to be part of the human race right now.
High schoolers rock video for Engineering Expo

It's an interesting and creative ad which I probably would have enjoyed more had I been able to hear it. The sound quality was terrible.
Trailer for documentary about virtual worlds
February 6, 2008 12:50pm
Looks really interesting. Hopefully it will give a good overview of the gaming community as a whole and not just focus on the negative aspects. Gaming is just like any interest, be it food, drink, sex, sports, work, exercise etc, everything in moderation. I play MMORPG's as well as one and two person games with my husband, it's a common interest and it has actually helped us in a lot of ways. Playing together (and with our friends and family) has taught us a lot about communication, tolerance, patience, team work etc. Just this past summer our 12 year old niece got into WoW and learned everything from how to work with others to how to balance a budget. We're talking real world applications here. Lets hope this documentary will use an even hand and stress the point that in moderation gaming can be an ultimately healthy and beneficial use of our time.
WonderHowTo.com - a directory of how-to videos

I could be wrong here, I don't know the guy personally so I can't really say, but based on the provided info he seems like the kind of guy who likes to push peoples buttons and be the center of attention to the detriment and annoyance of those around him. In other words, a jerk. I don't care if he finds a cure for cancer, if he acts like a jerk he's a jerk. According to the article his own friends said he likes to push boundaries and provoke people. Tossing a puppy into a pool = instant dislike in my book.
Regarding his website, meh. I'd be more impressed if he'd made the videos himself, or heck, even hosted them himself on a site just for tuts. But all he's done is link to video tuts from various sites. So he gets credit for displaying other peoples hard work which always annoys me. Besides, there are other sites just like this, it's not innovative or anything. Overall I'm unimpressed with him as a person and a businessman.
Clever grocery-store coupon strategy
January 24, 2008 12:39pm
I used to clip coupons, among other things, to save money. Saving money and getting something for nothing (or little) was a a highly organized obsession of mine. Then I was diagnosed with severe food allergies and all my coupons were worth zilch. It was then that I realized that 99.9% of all coupons were for products that are terrible for you and the environment. They don't give you coupons for healthy foods like whole grains, fruit and vegetables, low fat dairy etc. At best you'll get a coupon for sugar coated overpriced cereal, bags of soggy iceberg lettuce (the bag is mostly filled with air and iceberg lettuce has no nutritional value) and 'yogurt popsicles' made with zero yogurt and full of saturated fats. If you want to save money (and your health and the environment) buy local, buy organic, plan meals so you don't waste half of what you buy and use your own cloth bags instead of grocery bags. I guarantee you'll save more money that way than using coupons.
Florida school board approves McDonald's report-cards and school-bus audio ads

I'm not an uppity parent, I'm not a parent at all (yet) but I still find this tactic offensive and inappropriate. There's plenty of money to fund the schools without taxing people to death if we stop funding wars and ridiculous government programs. Rewarding kids with a high fat, high calorie, 'treat' full of chemicals and blasting them with ads on the bus that they can't turn off is just plain wrong. It's bad enough that kids barely get an education in public school and have to eat junk for lunch without the government and big-business spewing their propaganda all over our kids.
Tom Cruise's Scientology video -- and Gawker's legal battle to host it
January 17, 2008 10:43am
I'm a big supporter of sensible copyright laws because right now few copyrights are being protected while others abuse the laws in the extreme. So if I want people to write sensible laws that are actually fair and at the same time want these laws upheld when my own copyright is violated I have to apply those laws to everyone regardless of whether or not I agree with what they're doing. I haven't watched the video because frankly I couldn't care less about what fanatics have to say period. But the videos are copyrighted and are being used without permission or payment and should be removed. We can't protest unfair copyright laws if we blatantly cherry pick who we think the law should apply to. Hypocrisy is not the way to fair laws.
Blender-shaped baby-bath
December 16, 2007 10:36pm
The base looks unstable and there's to much water in the 'tub' to be safe. It's a waste of money and it looks like it would be difficult to wash the baby's back/legs in this contraption.
Coffee Hacks With Mark/Foxie Moxie
October 17, 2007 2:22pm
Great concept but there are a few things that would make it better in my opinion.
I'm not a huge fan of heated plastic especially when it's holding my food/beverage. So a ceramic version would be more to my liking and would address the 'ugliness factor'. Sorry, but it's rather plain and dull looking, ceramic would be more attractive and you could use a variety of colors, finishes and patterns.
Also, I can tell from the video that it would take me all of five seconds to not only shatter the glass due to the pressure being placed on it during compression (and possibly crack the plastic for the same reason) but also the cup bottom would slide on the table and most likely end up on the floor in a gajillion pieces and I'd be covered in hot coffee. Admittedly I'm severely accident prone but I think it's a real concern for the average user.
Here's what I'd like to see. A ceramic version in attractive colors, the pieces would fit inside each other (Russian stacking doll style) for easy portability and the device would include a matching ceramic mug with a rubber bottom, a nicer ceramic stir-stick and a washable reusable filter.
As is, it's great for when you're camping or something, but not something I'd want to pull out and use in front of guests at an afternoon tea/coffee.
Journalist tries out Raytheon's pain-ray weapon: "No sir, I don't like it."
September 24, 2007 1:38pm
Just reading about this makes me feel like my lunch might come up and that perhaps I should start looking into private islands.
"It can throw a wave of agony nearly half a mile."
Here's what's playing in my head right now:
A group of teenage boys gets a hold of one of these or figures out how to build one. Gee, wouldn't it be funny to turn this on someplace crowded for a laugh? Like a mall, or a parking lot or a county fair? Wouldn't it just be hilarious to watch as people trample their own children to get away from the invisible pain maker? Better yet, lets aim it at busy traffic and watch all the folks crash. Lets aim it at a peaceful protest and watch as people panic, run screaming into traffic, trample each other, claw their own eyes out to stop the pain. I'm LMAO.
Lets assume for a sec that this will be used properly, on out of control rioters. What about the people in that half mile radius caught in the beam who have nothing to do with the riot and have no idea why they're suddenly in agony? Is the government going to pay for all the hospital bills? How about the therapy bills? How about the funerals?
This weapon isn't any less violent and dangerous than a gun, a taser or a baton, but it is easier to hide and easier to deny. Someone shoots, stabs, tasers or beats someone and there's evidence left behind. You turn on your fancy little pain machine and how exactly can that be traced? Yay for accountability free crimes! Bravo human race.
Bottled water forbidden at Seattle festival
September 3, 2007 4:45pm
We recently visited the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire (which was more like a shoddy traveling carnival but that's another story) and were told at the gate that no food or drink was aloud to be brought in. They checked all our bags, including my tiny camera bag (for weapons?) and we had to leave our things (a bottle of gatorade and a bag of hard candy) in the car.
It was extremely hot on this particular day and the entire faire is outside with very few shady spots to rest and no water fountains that we could find. I have health problems including extreme food allergies and trouble regulating insulin and electrolyte levels, so I couldn't eat or drink anything being sold on the premises with the exception of water which they were charging an arm and a leg for. Long story short I ended up being rushed to the emergency room with heat stroke, dehydration and low blood sugar levels. We were at the faire for roughly 3 hours and we did drink water but had no other food/drink that day. We all wore sunscreen and hats with brims. There were at least three other people that day who had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance from the faire for the same reason.
Forcing people to buy overpriced food and drinks is bad enough for people without health problems but to for folks like me it's even worse. Most of the food sold at places like this (movie theatres, faires, parks etc) is junk that I wouldn't feed my cats. Why should I have to eat their overpriced, poorly packaged food substitute that's been sitting on a shelf for who knows how long? Because people are greedy that's why. Suffice to say I won't be going anywhere from now on that won't at least allow me to bring in a bottle of water and a roll of lifesavers.
No friends yet.
