Happy Birthday To You's complex, sordid copyright history
June 19, 2008 2:21pm
I love this paper because of the incredible research he did -- he dug at every 'fact' he came across until he hit the bottom (often overturning things that have been taken at face value in other well-researched HBDTY histories). He even debunks Snopes in the footnotes!
The link isn't obvious in the linked document, but he provides all the sources (including mp3s of relivant scores) here:

Who are the "Media Bloggers Association" and what gives them to right to negotiate copyright with the Associated Press? -- UPDATED
June 19, 2008 6:45am
I used to work for a political media firm in DC, and we worked with all sorts of organizations with names like 'Doctor's Association of Medicine' that were just one or two people with a box of letterhead.
It's not hard (or uncommon) for some nut with an opinion to found an authoritatively-named organization and try to be the voice of one side of an argument in the media.

I saw an interview with two artists (Linda Montano and Tehching Hsieh) who did this for a year. By the end, they were about ready to kill each other.
Jesus Made Me Puke: Matt Taibbi Undercover with the Christian Right
May 28, 2008 12:35pm
For what it's worth, charismatic churches are just a subset of evangelical Christians. When you see people speaking in tongues, handling snakes, etc, a lot of Christians think these people are nuts, too.
David Lynch's 52 second film
May 19, 2008 2:21pm
I watched this in college, because my friends and I were all Lynch nerds. I vaguely remember that this was the only one where it looked like the director even tried to make a full film. If I remember right, Spike Lee just filmed a kid standing on some stairs or something.

I buying this book! It jives with the values I'm trying to impart to my son: Be curious and find truth.
Of course, he's 2, so it'll be a while before I give it to him.

There's an irregularly updated website I read (Matthias Wandel's Home page) where the guy talks about his tech/woodworking projects and other hobbies -- the most interesting section to me is where he explores modern ruins. It makes trespassing seem fun!

Smashmouth Isolated Vocal Track
February 18, 2008 2:05pm
From what I can piece together, this song is a tale of woe all around (It even involves Tim Allen).
- Smash Mouth recorded an album called Old Habits in 2005
- This song was recorded at that time, and didn't make the cut
- Sony had optioned the use of some 'exclusive' Smash Mouth songs (including this one) for a Tim Allen family-of-superheroes movie called Zoom
- The album Old Habits was deemed terrible, and was never released
- Zoom rated 2% fresh, and flopped at the box office

Bowed Piano Ensemble
February 6, 2008 12:09pm
One of my favorite pieces is a minor work from George Crumb called 'A Little Suite for Christmas'. For certain parts, the pianist reaches inside the piano to play the strings directly. It makes the music sound other-worldly.

I wasted some time with this last month as well ;-) Tips: Start as far away from the cat as possible, and create a wall leaving one opening until the cat is one dot away, then seal his fate. It's a win almost every time!

New book features US Military emblems, shows the Pentagon is full of D&D geeks and X-Files fans
October 29, 2007 1:36pm
My dad was in the military, and it seemed like they created patches for most of the projects he worked on (he usually gave them to me). They were likely made to spend year-end dollars.
I think the patches are evidence less of a secret cabal, as they seem to portray here, and more of the frat-ish sense of humor that old army guys usually have.
I'll probably get the book. Sounds interesting.

What is this heirloom mystery object?
October 19, 2007 11:03am
I think my mom had something similar (though it was made of plastic and probably bought in the mid 70s) for making pom-pons. You wrapped yarn around it somehow, closed it up, cut the yarn around the edge, opened it back up and poof.
I don't think this is exactly the same -- ie, I doubt it makes pom-pons, but I bet this is something similar for tatting or some other older form of lacemaking.

I'll be in Portland on Monday for two weeks. How do you visit the museum? I'm having a hard time finding any information on how to actually get there.
