These aren't satanists. They're christians. That's the fine moral upbringing of home-schooling at work....It's only surprising that more christians aren't caught doing this.
Is this sarcasm? Would you say the same of Muslims? Or Jews? Or Vodun practitioners (okay, the last is granted)...
It's not the Christianity leading to this. It's them being effing stupid.

Three-year-old boy has never slept; parents maintain 24-hour vigil
May 10, 2008 12:30pm
Once, after only about 2 days, I was treated to the sight of very realistic (but see-through) leprechauns, about 10-12 inches high, Irish dancing on the armrest of the chair I was sitting in, and laughing at me - really. All the while I was describing exactly what I was clearly seeing, to my flat mate, who was a little freaked out, but enjoyed the descriptions none-the-less.
I read a story with that once. I can't recall who it was by. Might have been a Poe.
Seven days? Really? Man. Three nearly killed me.

Apparently, it is effecting him badly with symptoms similar to autism.
"Because one minute we don't know if he's going to be good or bad because of the mood he's going to be in."

Chiari malformations (CMs) are structural defects in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance. When the indented bony space at the lower rear of the skull is smaller than normal, the cerebellum and brainstem can be pushed downward. The resulting pressure on the cerebellum can block the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (the liquid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord) and can cause a range of symptoms including dizziness, muscle weakness, numbness, vision problems, headache, and problems with balance and coordination. There are three primary types of CM. The most common is Type I, which may not cause symptoms and is often found by accident during an examination for another condition. Type II (also called Arnold-Chiari malformation) is usually accompanied by a myelomeningocele-a form of spina bifida that occurs when the spinal canal and backbone do not close before birth, causing the spinal cord to protrude through an opening in the back. This can cause partial or complete paralysis below the spinal opening. Type III is the most serious form of CM, and causes severe neurological defects. Other conditions sometimes associated with CM include hydrocephalus, syringomyelia, and spinal curvature.
So it's a pretty nasty disorder. Pity.

No love like hawt sauce love. By the way, Dave's is good tasting stuff. I've met some of the representatives and tasted various product and I quite like them. I like Tabasco for most stuff, but Dave's has a special flavor. There's also a brand that comes to the market at my school, I can't recall the name but they make a mean habanero sauce. They had a couple of whole ones at the table and the maker offered one to this guy next to me who was posturing about hot sauces, and he was like no way man, so I challenged the maker to see who could get it down fast enough. Lost, I'm afraid. And I wonder why I have stomach problems.

Free marrow-donor kit and registration
May 8, 2008 11:36am
Still, I'm sure they charge the patient for the marrow itself, why not take out the fees from that?
Because the typing has to happen before the patient pays, because not everyone typed is used. The costs would be prohibitive because a relatively small percentage of those who are typed actually end up being useful. Therefore all marrow-recipients would see a rise in their costs disproportionate to how many people actually -donated- marrow.

Have you ever been at a party with someone you've just met and you're having a conversation, and they continuously find some way to make the topic all about them? Or they make the most convoluted connection about a topic to lead back to them?
Except it's not. Because the person in the party is only talking about himself. Cory's telling us when / where we can get Little Brother related stuff, how we can help give copies to the world, and maybe where we can see him on tour (except for the neglected South -cough-).

And you guys, I checked my RSS search. Typed in the terms "little brother". Got 35 results.
Typed in "boingboing". Got thousands.
What does this mean? Perhaps that proportionally there are NOT that many Little Brother posts. A lot less than steampunk. It's just- once you start focusing on the fact they exist, it seems like there are millions of them. There aren't.

wouldn't leaving an ice cube in that contraption for a few minutes raise the temp so much that any increase in melting time due to the shape would be lost?
Not to mention that the cube's metal and will readily accept the ice's coldness. The little bit of melting water coating it will negate the temperature increase because the melting water is almost the temperature of the ice... there's a way to explain this eloquently but I'm not finding it.

I might be essentially forced into surgery, though- my grandma insists on me taking her pills to rectify the situation (as I haven't been given any yet) and is the sort to push antibiotics on me at the slightest sign of a cold. I'm pretty good at palming things, though I take the acid reflux pill since it seems to help. I'm always nervous about takings something I'm not prescribed, though. I don't think insisting on surgery would be beyond her at all. With luck I'll be kicked out by then.

May 7, 2008 10:18pm
How in the hell can Antinous say they don't train military people to think and not be an attack on the character of anyone who's been in teh military?
They DON'T teach military men to think. I've had four people enlist in their high school years (three on the delayed entry program, going to boot camp their junior summer), one just this last year, another in ROTC at the college level to be an officer, another in the Naval Academy.
That is not an attack. It is a statement of fact that all the friends I have in the military would echo. Andrew, a Marine, came back from basic training and turned his back on his best friend. Why? Because she was planning to go to the Army. He screamed obscenities at our drill team and behaved basically like Sergeant Simms- whose PT has always been killer. Not that I am against PT. I like working out, and hard; the fact remains that the other drillers were not used to that treatment and the Andrew who had not been in basic had known that. He shouted phrases like 'raghead' with no sense of irony.
A few months after his return mellowed him out. But the fact remains that his service changed him. It made him reactive.
And that's the way they all are. In varying degrees. Andrew got the worst of it because the Marine Corps is more grueling. They're a little bit more proud, a little bit less thoughtful than they used to be. And only Andrew's actually been in Iraq. The others haven't gone through AIT or shipped out yet.
Skullhunter attacked an entire group of people. Yes. I think that's wrong. Antinous gave you the impression that he did the same, but I interpret his comments more faulting their training than them.
But you're calling people yahoos and being sarcastic and condescending and rude, and you're not furthering the conversation at all by doing this. If you wanted to prove a point, you'd do it without personal attacks. Nobody's going to listen to you the way you're going about it.

I guess I value my group (JROTC teams) from 'suffering'. My Color Guard had to learn to do everything in less than a week more or less on our own, and we've always been the ones to get yelled at most by our Sergeant. The group pushups and workouts have made us one, I guess. That and with Sergeant Simms, I felt pretty 'groupy' with the other people who fell over and vomited from sheer exhaustion.
Symptoms.
Stabbing pains. Twisting pains. (Abdominal region) Nausea, fever (usually when I don't eat in order to avoid the pain), black outs, lethargy. Insomnia because of the pain. It's worse when I eat something that interferes- citrus, spice, salt, soda, energy drinks, school food, red meat. Anything delightful (with the exception of the school food.)

At any rate, Skullhunter gave it up and Antinous did not say; Skullhunter, YOU are clever but don't talk about it here, Greg's just a meanie, he told both of you to can it. I think that's neutrality, that's equal parts STFU.

Taku-san, then. I did investigate and came to believe 'san' was a term of respect? Chan is the child diminuitive, I know that much, and kun as well, right? I thought 'san' rather more appropriate for the little tyke that I am. Also intended to give you the respect and honor your age commands! :D

I used to like to watch Skinny Brandon rip him apart in any sort of fight because, despite the fact that Brandon probably weighs less than -me-, and whose wrists you can encircle with a hand and have space left over, Brandon would have him tapping out in moments.
What is the -reason- for muscling up like this? It doesn't make you more capable of anything, except for having to hire a hygenist to wipe your ass when you finally can't reach anymore.

NobodySpecial,
I did apologize for the way my words were taken. I make a point of attempting politesse everywhere I go, and the fact is, the only thing I was even remotely'rude' to you was in the name calling; which you obviously didn't seem to have a problem with, based on your language. Which gave me the impression that that is how you conduct conversations and that it would hardly bother you. (This is not meant as condescension but honesty; in verbal situations I use insults in conversation and they're simply a part of my behavior with others.)
I did attempt friendly advice; the suggestion of the golden rule.
Nevertheless, as you still seem to feel I have wronged you in some way, I apologize for saying you were behaving as a troglodyte as well.
You're welcome in this forum, you know. This concept that we're all unfair is taken from a single experience that was not pleasant from any side and is much the result of miscommunication and quick reactions from everyone in this thread. Which is not to blame Antinous, Arkizzle, Takuan, or any of the others who sought to inform you on how to rectify your behavior.
I am willing to forgive and forget and treat you again as a new commenter in another thread.
Please don't insult Mom though. It's her prerogative to delete posts or simply disemvowel as she sees it. She works very hard and doesn't deserve antagonism from anyone on BoingBoing; it is her consistent efforts that keep this place from becoming another Fark, or the BB it was last time there was commenting.
I agree with Xopher. It's a one-time situation that I will not judge you on; first impressions are often wrong. Again. I'm extending the olive branch. Return again another day and another place, and maybe we'll all get along.

Terry,
Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification on Abu Ghraib. It was a quick two word reply meant to convey the idea that the military is not infallible, and that ethics teachings often fail, as you explain, less than remarking on ROE at Abu Ghraib. I by no means disapprove of the military. I have many friends who are enlisted men and women, and I at one time (very recently) considered it a path for myself.
I simply believe it's very hard to police any institution like this, and when you have loyalty inbuilt to children, that there is likely to be less objection to a travesty such as Abu Ghraib.
When I have more time, I will analyze what you've said more clearly; I much appreciate the information and will be sure to reevaluate my stand on the prison scandal.

and all you want to do is take that elitist point of view that unless you were "smart" enough to go straight to a higher education, you're too dumb to be anything but a pawn or a tool
I don't see how any thing I wrote correlates to elitism. Excuse me, but your assertions on my character are unfounded and unwelcomed. I am currently considering dropping out and getting a GED for the simple sake that I could make more money doing what I know than going to school in unnecessary classes that I am currently struggling in - failing, even.
At least at a school like this, you can pick a career and they'll help you get there.
I support schools that do that. I do not support schools that make it possible for children to practice military tactics at young ages. It's never worked out. Ever. Sparta, Africa, and Germany have taught us this. Children are children. I'm a member of JROTC, which is as far as it should go. You learn leadership there but we're strictly kept from learning actual military tactics beyond first aid and marching. We target shoot. SWAT tactics are something else entirely. Busting in doors and effective invasion of buildings in dangerous situations does not equal a necessary pre-job training. You can get those skills at the job.
"Crappy on the job training?" That's for things that don't have Military Police Academies. I should hope our SWAT officers aren't getting thirty minutes of instructional videos- which they aren't.
If you're going to make off-topic comments like how you have no atrocities on your record, and imply that everyone who has been in the military is an unstable brute looking for a fight, you better be able to back it up.
Being as you initiated the comments which led to his 'off-topic comments', I think this is a case of pot and kettle. Hurrah, you.
I am friends with and work with people who were lucky if they graduated from public school.
I'm going to one. Your 'well I have friends who are -----' argument is trumped by my daily experience, I'm afraid. I see these kids every day. Whether you're 'elitist' or someone I apparently perceive as dumb (which, for the record, I don't, thanks), you're still subject to the social pressures that are going to make these schools dangerous.
Yes, options are needed. No, this is not that option. Vocational school, yes. I'd fully support this- minus the military aspect.

China's got some problems. My country's got some problems. Whichever can be fixed should be fixed, and I don't effing care if it's something happening in Iceland. Iraq is not a good example. These are children. 14-18 year olds. You want a group of people who will be subsumed into the war machine with no protest whatsoever and indeed delight and pride? Take the teenagers. We're so desperate to fit in, to be a part of something better than ourselves, to have the group approve, that we'll hurt ourselves and others doing it. Without a second thought.
And continue doing it for the rest of our lives.
Also- this high school will set a precedent. It'll make a middle school reasonable. And then elementary.
Rescue tactics, fine. Professional demolition and SWAT tactics? Why in hell for? Why can't those things be learned as an adult, when you're searching for those jobs? Rescue tactics are fantastic- they will help any civilian. SWAT tactics will only provide an opening for militarization of people too young to not mouth off in D-Hall. They'll also allow the kid who thinks he knows everything since he took a few classes in school to try to be a hero in a situation the real SWAT should handle, and get himself and someone else killed.
Death of the D.C. Madam
May 5, 2008 5:44pm
She was convinced that she would be murdered. She even said that she would never commit suicide; if it appeared that she had, it meant that someone had gotten to her.
Bears repeating, Antinous.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong as I'm a naive young girl, but what is the difference in selling your body and going out to bars and waking up in hotels without the slightest clue of your partner's name or age or anything?
I personally have issues with contact; as I'm not even into kissing for several dates and certainly go no farther (which is appropriate but more and more less common in my age group)- I wouldn't participate. But why not decriminalize? Women can sell pictures of their bodies. They can sell displays of their bodies in erotic situations, performances. They can even sell touching of their bodies in certain gentleman's clubs.
Prostitutes -are- at high risk for sex crimes.
If they were able to report those, they would be less so in danger. I don't believe rape of random individuals would decrease- as Mom said, First, if they're deterred by not wanting to break the laws against prostitution, they should be deterred even more by the far greater illegality of sexual assault. However, violence against prostitutes could well decrease when men didn't have the idea in head that the prostitute wasn't going to go to the cops for fear of jail. Or they could end up being murdered.
Still - it's going to happen anyway. Put it out in the open and at least those who abuse will stand a chance of being prosecuted, and those who use their capabilities to turn a profit will be less stigmatized.

Killing a Pleo robotic dinosaur -- video
May 2, 2008 11:54pm
Poor Pleo.
I killed a caterpillar by accident once while collecting specimens for my biosphere. I was about seven. That whole summer, every time I saw a caterpillar I would flinch, and it seemed I was stepping on a lot more of them, like they were lining up to be slaughtered. (They were -everywhere-.) Later on I realized they weren't caterpillars, but webworms, and the periodic infestation we have.
I still remember that awful horror when I squished it with a cup on the fence while trying to retrieve it. After that- I stopped riding my scooter, because it was impossible to without killing one of them.
It was capable of feeling the pain though. The Pleo imitates it. I can watch that video without feeling bad. It reminds me of the boy in Artificial Intelligence though- how all the robots are made to be aware of pain so that they do not go into the fire or something, but the boy is different from the others, and his human 'brother' enjoys inflicting pain on him and making him bear it.

It's the weekend Takusan. I don't start homework 'til 11 PM Sunday.
Besides! Prom! Mask making! I'm going to take some photos now and redirect you to them, just to show off my fledgling 'art'.
But my standardized tests are done. I finished today's 65 question evaluation of my abilities in twenty minutes. What significant event occurred in 1776? What document did the Magna Carta influence? Who was the president of the United States during the Civil War?
What color is the sky?

Tenn: sleep well. My only question is one of politesse; is there a reason you spell my name "Carny", because if there is, I might enjoy it.
But, as my name isn't spelled that way, absent a reason, it's jarring.
It may still be jarring even when you know the reason. You may have seen it spelled 'carnie' in the past, but I prefer 'carny' since it follows your name a bit more phonetically (and I imagine in pronunciation?)
A carny is a carnival ride operator. You are nothing like one, far too well-spoken, but I can always pretend to myself you wear suspenders with Billy Bob Teeth and cheat small children out of their money in real life. Have you never had that joke? It's a good thing I wasn't around when you were in grade school. I'd have personally ensured you never live it down.
Anyway, if it's still jarring, I'll be glad to stop!
She's asking you to clarify how fish who needed salted water; of a specific osmotic pressure, survived when it was so greatly changed. The flip-side question for fresh-water fish is also unanswered.
Thank you for addressing that. Not that it will ever go answered. I really hope it's a valid scientific concept, since I reached the conclusion on my own. I was going to avoid mentioning that lest Evidence say I am not a scientist and do not have the proof of that, but being as it will never be addressed anyway I think it's safe to say.
Does anyone know if it is a correct evaluation?
Seriously Xopher, if all that came out of this marathon, was the words you wrote about your conversation with god, then it was all worth it.
Indeed. I'm printing them out and sticking them on my wall. I think the thread was worth it, though, especially for me personally. I've never participated in a debate or conversation like this before and I'd like to imagine my limited input was helpful to someone somewhere. It helped me. I know that reading your responses, reasoning things out, searching proofs, and evaluating Evidence's charges has made me a steadfast evolutionist, and made me certain of why I am. Evidence said he hoped he was not pushing any of us away from God. I would not say that he pushed me away, but that my own findings cemented me in evolution theory, because now I understand it better than I did before. I will be able to respond when I'm confronted with creationism. How delightful!

Which makes sense, being as you said not I am getting married but she is, but as it was late my neuro processes were slowing. Don't question yourself- my first boyfriend is bisexual now, but we get along quite well discussing various male assets. I broke up with him after he insulted my friend with a sweatshop joke, I insulted him multiple times, and he accused me of being mean. My parting line (which disproves the other thread which calls me humble and otherwise makes me sound like a nice person) was "I'm not mean, you're just a *****, and I'm not a lesbian." Now, though, he's cut the racism jokes and he's a much nicer person (as am I, doubtless, but only from sheer luck and some sort of intervention.)

I have BestBuy Insignia bluetooth headphones. 50 bucks, can be purchased with adapter for nonBluetooth devices. They pair with my phone and have easily used controls on the earpiece to access the call (which interrupts music so I know I'm receiving one.) The sound is exceptionally clear and the range is good. It's A2DP and they work well with my LG CU500V- can't say how well on others. They're headphones, not earbuds, that fit around the back of the head.
I love them, have had them since Christmas, no problem.

Two days ago, crossing the street at a crosswalk leaving my school, one of my cadets was hit by a car. She was crossing at the appropriate time, but the light was nearing a change; she was still in the street when some mother, with her high school student in the car, decided that she simply could not miss that green light, and the little girl in the way was simply going to have to deal with her several broken bones and battered limbs.

Interesting, Scott. I'll pick it up after exams.
Your inability to read fiction after an english degree is exactly why I'm going to forgo the liberal arts entirely, no matter how interesting they may sound. Huxley's writing is much different from Orwell's, but in a way, I rather like it.
Yeah, all of Orwell was commentary on the current climate. What I found intriguing about Huxley was the fact that Mustapha Mond, the Big Brother character, was fleshed out and reasonable. That, and the idea that there was no happy medium, that even Savagery was not better than being engineered.
In the scintillating news that is the life of a teenage girl, I have Prom this Saturday. Dear me.

That glassware is illegal?
My chemistry classroom is in -big- trouble then. Until two days ago, it was -all- on the counters and dusty. McKnight has organization issues. Just the other day we walked in and nearly fainted because the lab was entirely neat.
I had a chemistry set when I was a kid. It was lame. About two milliliters of things like phenolpthalein (an indicator) and very little 'real' things at all. No glassware.
I think this is brilliant. I would have liked it to come out a year early- I'm in that AP Chemistry class he mentions, and we do a good few amount of labs, but independent ones as well as the information it provides would have been a great aid.

All the fish adapted to the water they found themselves living in. Thats good design.
...
No.
Freshwater and saltwater fish follow entirely different biological processes. For a freshwater to survive in saltwater, or vice versa (with notable exceptions as salmon which still suffer from the change), they would have to evolve. Saltwater fish absorb through osmosis salty water and cast out through diffusion the salts and minerals to regulate their PH. Freshwater absorb through osmosis fresh water and cast out through urination the excess water.
They do not have the same systems in place to handle the change in environment; it is why they DIE in the wrong one.
To handle the change in the environment, they would have to evolve, which you deny. There is no other way- you say adaptation is the limit, but saltwater fish do not adapt to fresh waters. They die. So too do freshwater fish die in salt waters.
If a fresh water fish spawned a fish less prone to accepting the salt and minerals... or with membranes that worked equally well to diffuse after osmosis... then you might see a change. But that's evolution.
I too take my leave of this conversation. Good day, all!

Maybe fish are lower in the strata because they were buried first (closer to the bottom). Maybe birds are last because they could fly longer before succumbing to the flood and are on top with other creature in between sorted as they drowned and were buried?
No. Fish would have survived longer than birds, actually (except for the fact that they would have choked on the brine or vice versa). The only bird that could even survive a little while would be an albatross, and at any rate, even the longest flying albatross would sink to the water. The corpses would not begin to fossilize until reaching the bottom of the flood zone, and with a whole world full of water, that would have taken a while (because currents would have kept everything from settling, unlike in a pond.)
If that were true, then EVERYTHING would be on the same strata, which also disproves the idea of a global flood- since everything's not on the same strata.
Read me at #414, please, and discuss.
