Obama bumper stickers for every state

July 3, 2008 8:49am

"Obama is a new kind of candidate"?

The last I heard he was a politician and that kind of scum has been around for at least a couple thousand years.

Ret. U.S. Major Gen. says: "the current administration committed war crimes"

June 18, 2008 5:13pm

#8 - Clinton was impeached because he lied to Congress, not because he got blown under the desk by that pasty-faced skank. Remember "I DID NOT have sex with that woman"?

I'm not sure why anyone even bothers with impeachment. If Bush was impeached, he would just ignore it like Clinton did.

How about politicians start running the country again...naw, that would be too easy.

Monk building meditation center in California desert

May 16, 2008 5:17pm

#1 - Dude, the serenity of the quiet desert? What part of the Mojave do you think Adelanto is in anyway? The Victoville airport runway is practically on top of the town. On the serenity scale, I'd say it's about as serene as Palmdale was twenty years ago, before the commuters and gangbangers moved in. Adelanto is just a place you have to drive through to get to the playa at El Mirage.

That "glaring white statue" is the only interesting thing in Adelanto.

BTW, what exactly is a semi-buddhist and semi-monk? You either are or you aren't.

My personal Hammer favorite - Rasputin the Mad Monk.

"My Life in Forbidden Lhasa" (1955) republished by Nat Geo

April 21, 2008 2:33pm

Harrer was awesome. He also wrote "The White Spider" about the first successful ascent of the north face of the Eiger, which he was a part of. This book is highly recommended even if you don't climb. He really knew how to write.

He was so stoked on Tibetan culture that he built a small Tibetan monastery in his home country of Austria.

In his later life he was harrassed by idiots in Germany for being a former Nazi. He was forced to join back in the 1930's but got out as quick as he could.

Long live his memory and his enlightened view of life.

Special license plates shield officials from traffic tickets

As far as the clowns who run red lights, speed, etc. and get away with it, I say let 'em all hang.

On the other hand, more power to those that cruise down the toll roads with impunity. Those roads were foisted on us because the CA government is too incompetent to even deal with basic infrastructure upgrades anymore. The solution - let someone come in and build the new roads and then let them charge for access. Screw 'em.

The Mike Wallace Interview

April 5, 2008 11:08am

So far my favorite is Charles "Commando" Kelly. The guy single-handedly took out 40 Germans in 20 minutes. He enjoyed killing them not for the sake of killing but because he could finally get some peace and quiet and get the wounded fixed up. His attitude was basically shut up, get the job done and move one.

His opinion about Europeans being uncivilized because they're always starting wars is a classic. I'll bet he'd have a few choice things to say about the idiots in our country that are in control right now and also the ones who will be shortly voted in.

I love hearing this old-timers opinion's. I wish more people would talk from their personal experience's with something rather than depending on the newest politically correct attitude propounded in whatever form of media they choose to peruse.

A politician this guy ain't.

Wal-Mart loses trademark on smiley face

March 28, 2008 10:26am

I love Boing Boing. Where else could a post about a mega corp. losing a trademark turn in to a whine-fest about said mega corp. and how they run their business. I'm no friend of Walmart, but they can run their business how ever they want. People aren't forced to work there. People are not entitled to benefits from any place they work, although it is nice to receive them of course. It's this sense of righteous entitlement that bugs the hell out of me. Who would be dumb enough to try and raise a family working at Walmart. The people I've encountered who work there are generally bottom of the barrel as far as skills go. Why should a company pay people high salaries who have no skills. If you want to make more money, then get educated and work hard. Period.

America's new subprime shanty-towns

March 18, 2008 10:40am

The subliterate cinephile is either not paying attention or is an idiot. There has been lots of coverage of this homeless camp in the media. Even John and Ken on KFI spent a couple of hours talking about it a few weeks ago. They had the Mayor of Ontario on air as he explained his poorly conceived plan to take all of the homeless out of the Ontario's various parks and consolidate them in one place where they were to be housed and fed along with providing adequate sanitation and security. The plan was to get the homeless out of the various parks where they were camped out, pissing all over the place and generally making the parks areas that families avoided. That worked out fine for couple of weeks until hundreds of homeless from other cities and counties heard about the government handout and descended on Ontario for their free meal ticket. This has nothing to do with the sub-prime loan market and foreclosures. These people were bums to begin with.

Also, Ontario is forty miles from Los Angeles and is in Riverside County.

The BBC is completely spinning this.

Reading comprehension isn't low. To many of us, "teenagers and young adults" are kids.

Disneyland's plans to change It's a Small World ires fans

March 5, 2008 3:22pm

#29 - Jason, nobody is saying it's wrong to be proud of America (that is unless you're a Godless Commie, Hippie or Democrat). The point is that the original intention of the ride was to get American's out of their local mindset and think of the unity of the world around them.

Disneyland's plans to change It's a Small World ires fans

#5 - Right on! It is a 60's time machine.

I seem to remember reading that It's A Small World intentionally left out the USA since the ride is in the USA. The ride was supposed to be a celebration of the "outside world's" children.

Man gets disorderly conduct charge for writing vulgar message on check

January 15, 2008 12:02pm

#4 - "And what kind of prude can even exist in todays world without hearing or seeing that word [FUCK] somewhere?"

I would say a majority of the people above the age of 60 are still offended by the word. That doesn't make them prudes. Remember, "bad words" were taboo back in the old days, you know, when words still meant something.

I still wince when someone pulls up next to me at a stop light with their stereo spitting out garbage from some non-talent rapper who has no idea how to express him/herself without saying "Fuck". Why not just rant "Umgawa, Umgawa". It would make more sense.

Sometimes I wish that "bad words" were taboo again. The richness of the English language is disappearing

My parents would still wash my mouth out with soap if they heard me utter that expletive.

So Weinstein is admitting that he will use his money and power to alter U.S. law to fit his own demands? Corruption, it's not just for Republicans anymore. What a douchebag.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt are jokes. Oceans 11, 12, 13...ad infinitum were boring in their attempts at being cool. They're all wannabe Rat Packers and Bundy Drive Boys. Clooney is an old man and Pitt is a pretentious fop.

Oh Boy! More remix culture. I'm not even a Christian and this thing is just plain stupid. Are there any other FSM devotees that can come up with something a bit more original?

Note to Mark: Yes I could, but I could care less about the boring nonsenese that is FSM.

War on Terror's war on chemistry sets

#2, Halloween Jack, you're right on about the electronic kits.

When I was in grade school back in the late seventies I found a cool old glass pill bottle with a small cork on top. I asked my dad (who was an electronic tech) what we could do with it. He took it to work and that afternoon he came home with a "time bomb". It was basically some resistors and capacitors wirewrapped on a small circuit board with a red flashing LED on top. He even put a black Dymo label on it that said "Sven's Time Bomb". I took it to school and explained to everyone in my class that the resistors and capacitors actually contained gunpowder and would blow up anytime. The teacher raised an eyebrow and then sent me to the principals office where I explained it was all a joke. He laughed and sent me back to class - with the "time bomb".

If my kid did that today, I'd be put in jail for turning my son into a bomb wielding terrorist and off he'd go to the hospital after he was tased by the school security guard.

No friends yet.
