Guitars made from old game consoles

March 26, 2008 11:57am

The wood actually robs tone while increasing sustain. The character and shape of the wood creates tone by sapping energy from the string unevenly across the frequency spectrum. So, dense woods such as maple have sustain but crappy tone. Mahogany has tons of tone but no sustain. A les paul has a big chunk of maple on a bigger chunk of mahogany.

This guy is using a strat style bridge (hardtail). This sort of bridge uses metal for tone, in the form of a tremelo block. On cheap bridges this is made from cheap metal, on good bridges it is machined from a large hunk of brass or hard steel. That is why a strat sounds metallic (the yamaha sg copy had a tune-o-matic but still had a sustain block, what a great guitar that was). The wood on a strat also contributes, but less than on a tele, which is made from a light dense wood (ash or alder). This gives the tele a nice snappy sound.

Plastic tends to have an even frequency response (this is why good speaker cones are made of plastic - they don't have huge resonance problems). However, it is not particularly dense. So a plastic guitar would in all likelihood have neither sustain nor tone. This can be remedied by distortion and not caring.

Army's New PTSD Treatments: Yoga, Reiki, 'Bioenergy'

March 26, 2008 11:48am

I have an age old cure which involves not sending children off to become murderers and then not having bombs be dropped on them (this disorder used to be called shell-shock, right?)

I don't think the bioenergies would be too effective because they require a large element of faith, but yoga and meditation certainly could help that sort of thing. Unfortunately to attain any sort of lasting quietness you have to own up to all the horrors that you secretly feel guilty about. That might be the biggest problem, that the army thinks emotional problems of this sort can be sorted out easily. They can't.

Shellac Sisters, DJs who play 78s

March 23, 2008 5:36pm

KAB makes a custom 1200 that can play 78s. In fact, it's probably the best turntable on the market that can. I believe grado makes a special cartridge as well.

http://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/1200bld.htm

I think that a lot of 78s were cut at anywhere from 60-80 rpm, so having +-8% pitch control would be ideal.

I have no idea what sort of phono preamp you would use, I don't think the RIAA EQ works on 78s.

Artist chided for wrapping street art in black cloth

March 21, 2008 4:48pm

Am I the only one who feels good about public parks? Is there a more benign expression of civic power than pleasant places where you can take your dog or eat a sandwich? We don't need people making 'statements' there.

Completely disrespectful to the artists and even more so to the people whose job it is to beautify public spaces.

How is this a prank? Also, when are all overly-encouraged degenerate losers 'artists'?

Surely I'm missing something, but this just seems incredibly stupid to me, and I can see why Dols and the artists (artists in the sense of people who have worked hard to make something for public benefit) would be annoyed.

Now if you'll pardon me, I have to draw a huge picture of my genitals on a public building because nobody should control public spaces.

March 20, 2008 9:02am

#18 Here here, I completely agree. I just realized last night how weird it was how much idiotic commentary always comes with the facts. So much pre-done thinking. People just seem to choose the opinion that they immediately identify with. I know this blog isn't journalism, but I still would prefer if the posts had a few less adjectives.

And yeah, both sides are guilty in this case. You need to take responsibility for your own life, there's no substitute for that - I don't get it why people are so eager to make excuses for these poor idiots, it seems almost disrespectful. I say they should have read the contracts, understood them as well as they do now, and learned their lesson. Fool me once and all that.

Fun straws are phallic?

March 18, 2008 4:55pm

Where her private area becomes public, I should say.

Fun straws are phallic?

March 18, 2008 4:53pm

You're not seeing the whole story, Arkizzle. If the male private area was limited, why would the woman be bothered by it? The fact that it cannot be separated from her area is what bothers her, and rather than recognizing that this is the nature of all phenomena, she blames the straw.

In a way, she is forcing the straw to violate the privacy of her area. The fact that it is her daughter that initiates this violation is all the more ironic, since she came out of her private area, into the public area, where her private area becomes private, thus violating her.

Fun straws are phallic?

March 18, 2008 2:39pm

Where does consciousness end and male private areas begin? What is the spatial limit of awareness? Are you in a head? Some people in the east, when asked, say that their "I" is in their heart.

When one thinks of his private area, all of existence is centered around that point.

Are the limits of the male area coincident with the limits of private area? Or is the private area a subset of male area? Are the limits of privacy and maleness the same to external observers? Are they truly external? Or do they become male and private when they look at my male private area?

Truly - is there another male private area? How would I know? If the term "male private area" is understood by a hundred people, is there only one male private are between them? Or are their a hundred male private areas, each unique?

Moving on, if the wang shaped straw represents a male private area, in the same way that the term "male private area" represents the area of my simultaneous maleness and privateness - does someone who draws soda through this straw agree -

Fun straws are phallic?

March 18, 2008 12:50pm

You can't have the male private area without an area around it. You can't imagine seeing a male private area without being part of the area yourself, because if you looked at it, you would be there.

The male private area is a product of our imagination. In reality, there is no male private area, separate from other non-male, or non-private areas. It's all one area. To call an area male and private is to call all areas private male areas.

HOWTO Earn an artist's living in the 21st century: 1000 True Fans

March 5, 2008 1:27am

I am a true fan of nothing because the creative works of my generation are absolute garbage compared to what has come before. This is only because the past is, by the nature of time, much much longer than the present can ever hope to be.

Recorded music. I can listen to any music made hundreds of years back - music from all over the world, by geniuses, virtuosos and other truly passionate people. So, if I listen to an hour of music every day, what do I choose? Miles Davis? Handel? Joao Gilberto? The Treacherous Three? Or some band with Wolf in the name, consisting of three dudes with glasses who can't really play their instruments and sing out of their mouths?

Okay, so there's no reason for me to be a fan of any music (not the case - I would gladly pay to see Anoushka Shankar or Rufus Wainright or something). How about literature. We have these things called the classics - works that have enduring value. 9 times out of 10, if something is regarded as a classic, and fits my taste, I will enjoy it and feel enriched after reading it. So why get the new novel off Amazon? It might be excellent. But there's a very good chance it will be garbage.

The only advantage of contemporary creative works is their newness. What is wonderful in creative works is universal and timeless.

Appreciation is more sustainable than creation.

Do coat hangers sound as good as Monster cables?

March 3, 2008 2:33pm

For a good recap of speaker-wire history:
http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm

One of the lead engineers at McIntosh rigged up a test box that switched between different huge long coils of different wires, nobody could tell the diff. The only thing you need to make sure of is that the gauge of the wire is sufficient for the length of the run and the impedance of the speaker - however this only seems to come into play over long cable runs.

I think that the main reason there are so many speaker wire scams out there is because hifi boutiques don't make any money on amps or loudspeakers. They need a few high-margin items to stay in business - and the manufacturers know it, as do reviewers. It is in the interest of everyone but the buying public to know about this.

If people want to buy it...who cares. Some of the cables look pretty cool.

Video about quest to get Dalai Lama to carry Olympic torch

February 29, 2008 9:18pm

The Dalai Lama is believed to be incarnation of either Avolokitesvara or Amitabha - I don't recall which - in any case, he is considered the figurehead of a tradition that aims to relieve all sentient beings of suffering. They haven't succeeded yet, but they haven't started any wars, either.

The reason that the Dalai Lama is interested in, for instance, quantum physics, is that he feels that what physicists are learning now about the fabric of the universe is in line with what buddhist monks have learned from direct experience. In meditation, a calm state of mind is produced, and in this state of calmness, experiments can be run. In this way, you can learn about yourself.

A buddhist believes nothing, because an unchanging belief is a delusion that causes suffering in an ever-changing universe. Buddhists don't have 'rules' in the ordinary sense - they just have suggestions on a way to see things that reduces suffering to a minimum. The important thing is that you find out for yourself if the suggestion is valid. Broadly speaking, one of these suggestions is to avoid intense sensual experiences - this ranges from sex to eating spicy food - because you can easily become a slave to your senses.

However, nobody is judged by the dalai lama or anyone else, nor are they condemned to hell if they 'misbehave'. At worst, you might be reincarnated in the buddhist hell (which is not eternal, it's just a crappy life). Some buddhist monks pray that they can be reincarnated in hell, just so they can help people get out of it. That's a pretty cool attitude to have in life if you ask me.

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 10, 2008 11:32pm

#29, you are both missing my point and proving it. The Scientologist believes his faith (or belief at least) is legit. Put yourself in the shoes of that man. How would you convince yourself to get out of the machine? If I accused you of being 'programmed' against scientology, how would you react?

As far as starving the corporation of new members - that is probably the one effect this whole thing could have. The publicity anon is getting is def. a good thing, and I expect Tom Cruise will be the next Michael Jackson.

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 10, 2008 10:35pm

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 10, 2008 9:28pm

#16
The lost do not believe they are lost. Calling them pathetic does not make them realize they are lost. It makes them annoyed, or afraid, or something like this.

You hope that present "victim/followers" would wonder why they were bing called "pathetic". Do you really think that after calling someone a victim/follower, they would give you the benefit of the doubt and ask themselves if they were "pathetic"?

You act like you can see this from their point of view, but your thought experiment here demonstrates nothing but your unwillingness to address the fact that your opponents are human beings who are just as convinced that Scientology is good as you are convinced that it is bad.

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 10, 2008 9:09pm

#11
No, but you call them a pathetic flock. How do you feel when someone says that about you?

#12
No, not all protests, just those motivated by intolerance. I think standing outside of Scientology centers with information about the inner workings of the organization would work, because such an approach respects the dignity of the so called "flock". Wearing masks and saying that you 'don't forgive' is just obnoxious, and saying that their organization murders people is just counterproductive, since Scientologists wouldn't be convinced anyway (even if it is true).

I know it can seem impractically idealistic, but this is really one of those times where love is the only way to success.

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 10, 2008 8:50pm

#7 - pathetic people who need help? Who sounds like L Ron Hubbard now?

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 10, 2008 8:49pm

I just don't get it. How can a protest motivated by boredom and misguided hatred accomplish anything? If these people cared about getting rid of Scientologists, why haven't they put themselves in the shoes of an actual Scientologist and tried to figure out how they would be convinced to stop being one?

If you were a Scientologist, and a bunch of people came and told you that your religion (and it is a religion, to a Scientologist) was a sham, would that make you stop being one? If they made your fax machine waste toner, and your phone was ringing off the hook, would you just throw up your hands and say "you know what? maybe they're right."

This whole 'movement' is nothing more than a limp dicked lynch mob, eager to make clever posters illustrating how angry and unforgiving they are. This will not weaken Scientology, if anything, it will make Scientologists feel more of the same alienation and self-satisfaction that likely drew them to Scientology in the first place.

Kickyfast - Karma isn't a law dictated by a religion, it is a phenomena we are all subject to that is described in certain religions. I encourage you to read about Karma, because a lot of people have a pretty clear and pretty wrong idea about what it is.

I don't think Microsoft is evil, I just know from experience that they make incredibly bad products. They make garbage. Sometimes they buy good stuff and make it garbage. How would you feel if they went and bought Adobe? Microsoft Photoshop? There would be a suicide epidemic in the graphic arts community.

And speaking of the Dalai Lama - I think most people would agree that there are few peoples in the world today more deserving of the right to own guns than the Tibetans - and few people in the world who have more powerfully demonstrated the message of harmlessness than they. They captured the hearts of entire civilized world. What gun can do that?

If a buddhist owns a gun, I would expect that he contemplates the good that can come out of his owning it every time he looks at it.

However, since a gun is an inherently dangerous and scary thing (more dangerous than, say, a grapefruit), I personally doubt that most guns are kept around out of any impulse other than a sort of obsessive fear. There are many exceptions, I'm sure. I can see how shooting would be fun, for instance, and I do know that a lot of gun owners are obsessive about safety precautions.

@jlbraun - I agree with you again, I just find your exact choice of words strange. I think the key to this is that the unpredictability of consequences makes choosing the best course of action difficult - as unenlightened dudes, all we have to go on is faith, intuition and common sense. In this case, it seems to me that it is infinitely preferable to act out of compassion, simply because that sends an unambiguous message not to attackers but to all people who learn about the incident. Any other act will be interpreted by others in a limitless number of ways - the attacker's mother will curse you, Charlton Heston would compliment you, your mother and loved ones would commend you, etc.

Forceful self defense is an understandable reaction to an attack in the same way that panic and misery is an understandable reaction to death.

I would rather not get shot, but at the same time, it's not all about me, you know? Anybody with me?

As a buddhist and as someone who supports guns, I have to disagree a bit with jlbraun. Buddhism is compatable with self defense, but it should be noted that as a buddhist you should really avoid killing people, and you should your self defense as an opportunity to show mercy and compassion towards your attacker.

Also, I think that the ability of any non-liberated beings such as us to understand the complex hand of karma in our lives to be able to make statements such as 'the intention to cause harm is weak, so the karmic effect of the act is less'. Our perceptions are influenced by karma, so it naturally follows that our beliefs are, too. A seemingly unimportant act, and I don't think harming another in defense of yourself can even be considered unimportant, can have enormous consequences that you aren't aware of. My understanding of Karma is that it is invisible and inconceivable until you are liberated from it.

I believe buddha nature is in all things, and although I would be inclined to defend myself if someone attacked me, I would like to imagine that I would have the wisdom to see that both I and my attacker are the same (ie, the buddha is attacking me, Avaloketishwara is giving me the 1000sand armed smack down), and an attitude of harmlessness would probably sew fewer karmic seeds in both of us than in righteous self defense. As long as we have to die and confront this crap later, why not behave properly now?

What the dalai lama calls "reasonable" is not necessarily the best course of action. It's not like you could be killed anyway, and if you did allow someone to take your life, that's got to help you snag a pretty good reincarnation. Bardic brownie points.
