Books as home decor items

May 28, 2008 11:41am

I have a cousin who occasionally gives me a stack of old books for xmas, because, she says, I 'collect books.' If I politely tell her I look forward to reading them, she gets annoyed and explains that the point is that they might be valuable someday, and they look cool and old.
Reading these comments makes me feel I've found my people.

Adolf Hitler, Disney fan-artist

February 23, 2008 12:17pm

The fact that Mr Hakvaag says he is "100 per cent sure that these are drawings by Hitler" gives me pause. So far, the evidence seems to be:
1. They were found in the back of a painting signed A. Hitler (surely there have been other A. Hitlers in Germany?) and the signature "seems to match" other signatures of Hitler (but it doesn't sound like this has been looked at by an expert)
2. Two of them are initialed A.H. and again the handwriting seems to match
3. Hitler was an artist
4. Hitler owned a copy of Snow White
5. Mr. Hakvaag offers as further evidence, "If one wanted to make a forgery, one would never hide it in the back of a picture, where it might never be discovered."
(However, it seems possible that Anna Helding didn't intend to make a forgery at all)

Considering how much Nazi memorabilia has turned out to be nothing of the sort, this evidence seems to be to be worth, say 80% certainty.
That Hakvaag says he's 100% sure makes me think he's bullshitting or at least wants to believe it so he can get the $$.

Then there's the creepy angle: Why would anyone want to own a dwarf drawn by Hitler?!

I think this is kind of sweet. And it's not that different from nursing, is it?

Space Food Sticks

According to the information at the space sticks website, the 'about 44 calories' is now 210. Too bad; I seem to remember they were yummy.

Midwest airlines to passenger who was screwed over and shouted at: we did nothing wrong and owe you nothing

January 8, 2008 12:23pm

What is the deal with taking vowels out of posts? It's really bothering me. As far as I can tell (it's not all that hard to read posts that have the vowels taken out, just harder than it should be) all these posts are doing is looking at it from a different angle, wondering if the guy is exaggerating his side of the issue. Are any posts that disagree with boing-boing's post made unreadable?
Although I realize that the main point is the aggressive security guard, I came to look at these comments specifically to see if anyone had pointed out that flight attendants are allowed to refuse an exit aisle seat to anyone they think may not be able to assist others in the event of an emergency, and therefore most airlines make it clear that an exit seat can not be guaranteed, but I feel like I shouldn't bother to post that.
I'm really very disappointed in Boing Boing over this.

Haunted Mansion spiel to be scripted

I'd like to know exactly what remarks caused the complaints. Was it actually the blood red carpet one, or is that just an example of the sort of thing they ad-lib?

Anyway, it does seem like a shame; part of the fun is hearing what they come up with, especially if you go there often.

Top tech ads not necessarily seen on TV in 2007

December 20, 2007 11:05pm

Until the line about the PS2 being more expensive than the Wii, I was honestly unsure which product the ad was for. The PS2 came across much more as something serious gamers would want.
And yeah, the ad does seem to encourage the irritating 'women can be smart or sexy but never both' thing.

1965 skateboard movie: Skaterdater

Wow, I saw this in the fifth grade; for some reason the teacher thought this would be a good classroom film. I had totally forgotten until now. What a great movie.
