Apple sanctioned for misleading advertising ... again!

August 26, 2008 7:18pm

As a geeky sciencey type then lots of shampoo and other silly adverts often get my back up. But it's really easy to get them banned as the ASA are actually relatively competent. They just need a member of the public to complan first.

So If you ever fancy it then just use this link. Only takes about 10 minutes.

The publised adjuications are always worth reading.

Raisin Brahms (excellent pro-Art-ed video PSA)

That kid can pull a mean take.

Or is that single-take?

Or double-take-pro?

Either way, he pulls a good one.

Londoner videos his bullshit anti-terror stop-and-search

August 19, 2008 11:54am

Yeah the problem here isn't the policemen, it's the legislation and culture we are slipping into.

Brave guy for filming it. Kudos for that. I thought he wouldn't be allowed.

Souvellience in action & needed more than ever.

It's not that are generation is apathetic. This stuff annoys so many people, but we seem to have convinced are selfs nothing can be done.

Fuel Checker device knows difference between diesel and gas

I think this got investment on the BBC show "Dragon's Den" I think it's mainly aimed to sold to people who sell hire cars and so on. Though #1 in this thread, gives a much better solution the UK should have followed!

Dell Studio Hybrid makes Mac Mini flaws apparent

July 30, 2008 8:12am

Craig Grannell always writes decent stuff, even when I don't agree with him - I like his blog thingy here:

http://reverttosaved.com/

Though in this case the only reason I would be interested in a beefed up mac mini, is to get an updated version of Xbox Media Centre (now it's been ported to the mac). My modded Xbox has made the best TV box I've ever owned. The fact a £20 second hand machine and an hours work can out perform a £200 AppleTV is ridiculous, so It seems in the future I'll be going with the most open platform I can. And I doubt that will be a mac.

Disclaimer: He posts on the same forum I do. So I vaguely know him, in that weird 21st century way.

Cellphone popcorn hoax revealed as viral marketing scam

June 12, 2008 9:59am

"I'd ding them for promoting bad science, but I have to admit as far as marketing goes, they did their job."

Shame on you Joel I expected better from you.

Promoting preposterous science that actively undermines the publics understanding of radiation doesn't get a pass just because they were trying to sell something!

What would you do if you ended up in the year 1000?

June 11, 2008 2:01am

Oh and you could teach the germ theory of medicine. That would rapidly improve the world can't see you making much money out of it.

Also - in principle the tools needed to take photograph were discovered by the 1500's so if you only went back 500 years you could make the connection for people and give humanity an extra half centuary of photographs. Though who remembers how photographs actually work without heading to wikipedia?

Paying for the London Underground with a dissolved, naked Oyster card

May 8, 2008 2:26am

For the sake of science I repeated the experiment, using a timelapse camera to record the card dissolving.

I'm not going to hack the antenna into a magic wand.

When Apple Fans Go Crazy

March 18, 2008 7:50am

It is a selection effect.

Far more people with extreme view points (aka idiots) are going to post a comment to a review compared to those that just go. "Yeah thats about right" and click away.

Comment sections inherently probe the edges of the bell curve.

Scientology strikes back at "Anonymous" via YouTube

March 14, 2008 11:18am

And still Anonymous isn't a group. It doesn't have membership. The Anon that once made a bomb thread was caught by other Anons calling the police.

Anonymous is a joke organisation that got taken seriously. To self whore my blog again (sorry!) I wrote about anonymous here.

Scientology strikes back at "Anonymous" via YouTube

March 14, 2008 10:59am

I think whats interesting about this, is that to date Scientology has always sued people to shut them up.

There strategy is "Always attack never defend".

Now with the internet that strategy is faltering. If you sue and attack one person, he'll go to the web and create a huge PR backwash that spreads his message faster than ever.

So they are adapting and taking their criticism to the internet first.

It will be interesting to see what happens next. Especially as apparently the theme of this protest is cake. They'll be giving cake out to passers-by to celebrate L Rons birthday. They won't look that evil then.

Scientology strikes back at "Anonymous" via YouTube

March 14, 2008 9:39am

I went to the last protest in London and detailed how they tried to stalk me
here complete with photo's of my stalkers.

I was photographed entering the tube on my out bound journey tube miles from the scientology centres long before the protests were started.

I also went to Forbidden Planet (the only geek store to sell the V masks) in the break between the two protests (as they had spooked me and I wanted to hide my face) only to find that they had two people with SLRs in the store looking out for people wanting the masks.

They went as far to follow me and my friend out of the store.

Amazingly they fell for the old trick where we walked around a corner and waited for them. As they turned into the street they managed to photograph us photographing them and waving.

It was funny but it was also sinister.

Indie Nintendo DS Game About a Jewish Boy in Nazi France Pushes Buttons

Eurogamer says it has not been blocked at all. Still in planning stages, so that hasn't even come up yet.

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 11, 2008 6:44am

I'm doing a write up of my experiences at the London protests. I'm not an Anon - but so far I've got as far at trying to explain what Anon are. First part here:

http://skeptobot.blogspot.com/2008/02/what-and-who-is-anonymous-breaking.html

A very strange day. I was tailed and photographed before during and after the protests. They were hiding out in shops and inside the tube, waiting for people to take their masks off.

You Suck at Photoshop #5

February 1, 2008 12:06pm

I love this. Brilliantly, brilliantly done.

I also find it interesting that they appear to have done the first few shows on youtube with "My Damn Channel" to get viral readers, and then have pushed it to this so they could add adverts.

Crafty!

Massive machine animals in France

January 28, 2008 1:06pm

I saw the Elephant and puppet girl in london. It was brilliant. One brilliant aspect you don't often here about is how it was advertised. They didn't make it clear at all what was going on.

They didn't make it clear, where the Elephant was. You had to hunt it. Me and my friend spent almost an hour wandering around, asking people, following crowds. We knew we were getting closer when we kept finding the crushed cars.

Then we turned to a corner to walk straight into it.

A brilliant day.

No friends yet.
