Apple R&D building erupts into flames
August 13, 2008 8:37am
This is just a rumor, but I hear that rescue workers were met by a phalanx of lawyers, who demanded non-disclosure agreements be signed before they were allowed to put out the fire.
The marketing animal ark, engraved laptop edition
August 8, 2008 9:36am
$90 for a large graphic, $65 for a small one. Considering that I usually live with laptop for 4 to 5 years, this doesn't seem like a bad deal.
Plus, you can always hang your computer on the wall, once it becomes obsolete.
SWAT team raids mayor, shoots family dog because someone mailed them pot
August 7, 2008 9:42am
I bet you that is the last time that SWAT team ever goes in on a raid like that on anybody who isn't poor or black.
SWAT team raids mayor, shoots family dog because someone mailed them pot
August 7, 2008 6:45am
#35 I like the sentiment, but they have their own curriers.
More to the topic, maybe we need more government officials and lawmakers to experience this kind of excessive force and stupidity in order to get some rational changes made.
I live in Los Angeles, where the police force is modeled on the marines, where they have been using a tank to break down doors for over twenty years, and where someone getting shot in a raid on the wrong address given by a confidential informant is barely newsworthy. It has been interesting to me to see how drug enforcement has been used as an excuse to escalate tactics used by police across the country, ever since the CIA helped bring crack into my fair city.
Anyway, my hope is that this guy becomes Calvo guy stays angry, and becomes an activist on this issue.
This is GE Performance Television
August 6, 2008 10:01am
Sure, we all laugh at it now, but someone is going to find one of those, and then do a case mod on their Wii with wood grained contact paper and aluminum tape, hide an Apple TV or a Mac Mini in that tape deck, and then we will see who wants one.
Periodic rings, elemental bling
August 5, 2008 6:51am
They only go up to size 9?!? Bastards! Although, that would make the platinum one a bad-ass pinkie ring for me.
I am surprised that they don't have a titanium ring, too.

If anyone has a perverse desire to get one of those Blackwater t-shirts, they are $13 at the Blackwater Pro Shop. http://proshop.blackwaterusa.com/
I would love to see a few hundred activists protesting in/getting arrested in Blackwater "uniforms", maybe someone should print up a few hundred knockoffs.
Band Geek Heroes: T-shirts for every sort of musical dweeb
July 18, 2008 1:43pm
Wow, these shirts are brought to us by Torsopants, the same guys who also sell shirts at T-Shirt Hell. This is the site they created to sell their inoffensive shirts.
I am torn, my sister was a viola virtuoso, and she is addicted to Guitar Hero, so there is a shirt that seems like a perfect gift for her... But, she is the manager at the West Hollywood American Apparel, so it is hard to imagine her needing any more shirts.
MobileMe and Gmail: Pick one or expect frustration
July 15, 2008 11:47am
I think it may to too soon to tell how well MobileMe is going to work. It is also too soon to tell what additional functionally of the kind Joel needs will show up in the App Store.
My PowerBook is out for repairs, and I have been trying to use me.com from various computers, to access my email, calendar, and address book. So far, my me.com experience has been a training exercise in patience and acceptance with things that do not work.
That said, I expect these server issues and other functionality problems to get ironed out quickly, just like I expect that many of the earlier jail brake apps, or their equivalents will show up in the App Store.
What to do with an adopted, button-cute indigo iMac G3?
July 10, 2008 8:23am
I have another one just like it, same specs even, sitting in a box in my garage... I was going to send it in to Apple's recycling program, but had some odd emotional block. Anyway, you can have it. Then, my suggestion is to place then on pedestals outside your door, like a pair of Fu Dogs.
What did I plant in my vegetable garden, part 2
June 10, 2008 4:54pm
What you have there is a lovely ornamental tobacco plant. I used to grow them because they were supposed to be a deterrent to pests. Didn't work for me, but the plant was pretty, and a good conversation piece.
TomTom is making an iPhone GPS software
June 10, 2008 4:51pm
Thank god for section 3.3.7! I just bought an expensive Garmin, and I would have felt like a schmuck if not for the prohibitions in the iPhone SDK against direct competition with devices that can provide real time route guidance.
Rubbing estrogen on penis-tip prevents HIV transmission?
June 4, 2008 11:35pm
Somebody is pushing for an Ignoble Prize.
#2 In some parts of the world, yes. In other parts, no. Hence the recent recommendations for circumcision. (Yes, even as a Jew, that freaked me out, and I questioned the science.)
But my main question is: Is this supposed to work better than a condom? And, is estrogen supposed to be easier to come by than a condom?
I am concerned that time, energy, and money are being wasted on what seem to me to be silly ways to slow transmission, when we have condoms. Maybe more efforts should be spent on better distribution of condoms and sexual education. And, maybe scientists should be focusing on treatments, vaccines, and maybe even cures.
What did I plant in my vegetable garden?
June 4, 2008 7:25pm
You live in Los Angeles? At first I thought it was epazote. http://kaweahoaks.com/html/mexican_tea.html Which grows as a weed all around here, although I have planted it on purpose once or twice. You can also buy it as an herb in most markets catering to Central Americans...
...But, the flower structure is wrong.
I have grown tobacco a few times to, and the leaf shape apparent texture look right, and the flower buds look correct. So, that is my guess. Tobacco. http://coep.pharmacy.arizona.edu/curriculum/tobacco/tobacco_plant.jpg
Creepily awesome horror story podcast, David Nickle's "The Sloan Men"
June 1, 2008 10:57am
I think of the story as an observational piece about the evolution of relationships, with just enough fantastic remove to keep readers/listeners involved.
I think that the ending made sense if the story is an allegory about some aspects of the male/female power dynamic in relationships. In the beginning, the men dominate the relationship, in spite of their actual repulsive nature, until their talismanic phalluses are destroyed and drained of their vital fluids. Then, the women have to maintain the relationship with their powers of accommodation and acceptance.
The moral for men: Endear yourself, or buy a lot of Viagra.
Creepily awesome horror story podcast, David Nickle's "The Sloan Men"
June 1, 2008 3:47am
I think the story is an interesting examination of the idea of gender specific power. And, as I posted on the Pseudopod forums, it has a good lesson in it for me... Seriously, guys, protect your man roots.
T-shirt with picture of armed robot endangers British aviation system

The TSA is looking better and better (by comparison). At least a nail file or a bottle of shampoo pose a relatively plausible threat (in an episode of OZ).

The scandalous origins of Martin Scorsese’s After Hours
May 27, 2008 6:33pm
Thank you! That solves a 23 year old mystery for me. I grew up listening to Joe Frank on KCRW (The Santa Monica NPR affiliate). I heard that NPR Playhouse, and remembered some of the dialogue, specifically the "Surrender Dorothy" story. So, when I saw After Hours in high school, I thought that Joe Frank had written it. Two years later, while at film school, I got into huge arguments with my teachers and fellow students about that movie. Without proof, I jut seemed like a crazy asshole.
I agree with #5, if that movie didn't have that solid foundation formed by the first half hour, it would have been an incoherent mess.
EcoGIR suits made from recycled PET bottles
May 27, 2008 8:06am
Either that suit doesn't fit that model, or I have been wearing my suits wrong. Still, as ill-fitting and unattractive as that picture makes the suit seem, I have to go check it out. I already own that tie.
Did Gnarls Barkley's video producers "swipe" a photographer's style?
May 13, 2008 5:59pm
Wait, who is claiming IP on black men wearing beaded neck pieces? It was truly a brilliant Idea. I can't believe that no one had ever do it before. And that color combination, who would have thought of that in Jamaica? I need to know because if I ever buy my son a red, gold, black, and green medallion, I need to know whom to give proper attribution credit.
