A Convenient Lie

June 20, 2008 2:57pm

@JOEL: the globe is warming, yes. We are emitting CO2, yes. CO2 will cause warming. However, those three facts are not inter-related as cause and effect. For one, the globe has been warming even before we started emitting CO2. For another, water vapor is a much more significant warming agent ... or is it a cooling agent? We don't know. Perhaps the amount of warming which the CO2 contributes will not be noticable?

In any case, the global will warm and in a few half-milleniums will cool again. We'll need to be able to deal with both and shouldn't cripple our economy to stop warming because what do we do when we're poor AND the globe warms anyway?

Sabotage manual from 1944 advises acting like an average 2008 manager

Don't forget this one: object to everything as harming the ''environment''. Since the ''environment'' covers every conceivable thing, and since every action changes the environment, you can shut down any business this way. If someone proposes doing something which protects the environment, then point out the ways in which it hurts the environment. E.g. wind power kills birds, water power dams stop fish migration, and even nuclear power contributes to global warming by emitting heat.

The **Vectrex** is one of the worst video games, they say?? Obviously they never owned one.

MSI Wind becomes the $400 subnotebook to beat

May 14, 2008 7:25pm

Um, aren't we forgetting why subnotebooks failed on the first go-around? Have people's hands gotten smaller? Has their eyesight gotten any better (mine hasn't)?

I think that explosive bolts would discourage bolt cutters. Surely NASA has a few of those lying around that we could liberate and experiment with.

It's a "leanto", not a "shelter" although of course it *is* shelter, just not *a* shelter. And those were probably blackflies, which are the bane of everybody's existance this time of year (one just landed on my monitor. Good timing, bug, squish). Consistently higher temperatures later in the spring will kill them off.

Steal This Wiki launches alpha version of Steal This Book for 21st Century

People wanted the government to control business, but never realized that they'd get a government controlled by business. OOPS! It's not too late to fix matters, though. Stop pushing against businesses, and they'll stop pushing back against government.

We need an amendment guaranteeing Freedom of Trade, to keep businesses out of government, just like we needed Freedom of Religion to keep churches out of government.

I'd also note that the "Wild West" wasn't as wild as people make it sound. Of course, people talk about gunfights and shootouts. They're interesting! But they're also not typical. See the book The Not So Wild, Wild West: Property Rights on the Frontier by Terry L. Anderson and Peter J. Hill

Video: "Smash Lab" on Discovery

@9 is correct. This seems to be a Discovery Channel thing. All their shows consist of 30 minutes of content, 15 minutes of recapping the content, and 15 minutes of advertising. All their shows do this. It's stupid, annoying, and makes their shows boring.

Adam and Jamie should shop Mythbusters around to another channel.

Republican businessman funds pro-marijuana film

December 18, 2007 10:43am

The problem with the War on Drugs is that it is an attempt to put businessmen in jail as a proxy for shutting down their business. Well, guess what? The demand for the business remains (as it always shall), so some other businessman steps up.

Cerevellum Bike Computer Prototype

December 18, 2007 9:00am

The problem with any "backwards vision" device is that a bike is bouncy! Of course your head is bouncing, but your perception corrects for that. Not so for a mirror or camera, because your ears don't perceive their bouncing.

Just turn your head, and use your ears.

IceDozer Plus Scraper

This is the best ice scraper I've ever used. The two-hand arrangement lets you put your body into it.
