Terrifying early-1950s comic book covers

April 8, 2008 3:19pm

Wasn't Sandman from the eighties? And Violent Cases, and Signal To Noise, and Black Orchid? And Alan Moore has been at it even longer. He started in the late seventies.
I think Neil is super dreamy, by the way. Swoon!

Why free reading is important

I am reading Neil Gaiman for immense, ecstatic pleasure, thank you. (He is my favourite!)

TED 2008 -- Nancy Etcoff (channeled by June Cohen)

#6: I can only assume that the point of the cover is to highlight something that most people would consider the pursuit of beauty taken too far. Yes, it is a corset, and yes, it is unhealthily narrow. It is a product of tightlacing, which is the practice of training one's waist over a long period of time into a permanently altered shape. Corsets are not terribly bad for you, in their usual modern form, since they only take off two inches, on average, and they are more special-occasion things rather than extended visceral abuse.

I apologize for the mostly unrelated tangent.

High heels: tottery killers (infographic)

January 6, 2008 7:21am

I have a sixteen-year-old friend who has worn heels practically since birth. She actually starts falling over if she's wearing flats. She is already having hip problems, but the source of the trouble is the attitude, not the posture. It is more or less from walking like a model all the time.

She's gorgeous, though.

Andy Warhol perfume

Everyone knows that if you want novelty perfume that make sense and smells delicious, you go to the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. Lovecraft smells better than Warhol, anyway.
