The definitive article was in "natural history" 1989 (I think it was also featured in "Nature"). Obviously it is unethical to do actual experiments so the data was rather limited, but did seem to show that intermediate heights were the killers.

I think you give Turing too much credit. The man who actually built the colossus was Tommy Flowers. Turing was still trying to get an electromechanical computer to work reliably (which it never did).

DC power is still used for transmission over long distance as contrary to the urban myth DC has lower transmission losses at high voltages. The problem comes in tranforming down to lower voltages which is difficult for DC, but easy for AC.
