Graph of solar radiation in the US (Southwest is best)
May 12, 2008 11:21am
I think 'a total waste' is sending the wrong message. People use solar power for all sorts of applications, not just to power their homes. Clarification would be good. Here in Munich, solar panels are absolutely everywhere, to second Ted's comments. The climate is far from what its like in the SW, obviously. Discouraging people outside the southwest, is a serious disservice to the movement.
Japanese ciggie vending machines demand ID
May 12, 2008 10:32am
This has been the standard in Germany and I believe the whole EU(Bueller? Anyone? Anyone?) for some time. What whats odd here, is that you have to put in your smart card ID, but it will not accept digital payment, nor can non German citizens by tobacco out of them. With EVERYTHING shut down on Sundays and Holidays(14 national holidays in Bavaria), you see alot of seriously jonesing tourists at the Hauptbahnhof. I like to tie ciggys to a string and lead them down the pipeline...

Hoodie speakers keep open lines of communication
May 8, 2008 10:54am
I think the solution to this is to carry a device than can play out of one tinny mono speaker, but has been jacked to play it really loud. Gut a phone, leave the power and the speaker, hook a iPod shuffle to it, and load that shuffle with the worst music possible. Better to have a good selection of bad music, as you never know if you might be playing the same bad genre as your hearing on the Tube, or S-bahn or subway. Damn, I hope to hell I have not become a grumpy old man. Epiphany. I need to change my ways.

Hoodie speakers keep open lines of communication
May 7, 2008 7:30am
Not sure how to feel about this. Here in Munich, there has been a recent(?) phenomenon where teenagers will crank out tunes on their phones hung from a lanyard (oddly, it seems at least 75% of these people are Turkish) I understand the need to jam while walking around, but the sound is just awful, obviously. The Mediterranean disco/techno/crap-pop exponentially complicates the auditory suck-factor. Geriatric Germans just love it.
Now with this Hoodie, I get to hear this music louder, but at least in stereo.
I would totally wear one of these. I just don't think I would crank the jam when I was near other people.

People, this is a blog. They can post anything they want, anytime they want, for any reason they want. They have no obligation to us whatsoever. It does not have be current, or relevant. Just because one person, or even many people have seen this before, does not mean we all have.
This kind of post is exactly why I read this site. This off topic comment thread is an example of the only detritus it serves up.

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron is out
April 24, 2008 12:59pm
Every time I hear about Ubuntu, I hear the Talking Heads song Still Waiting. As in, still waiting for Cory to write his long...ummm...awaited review of Ubuntu. If I were a gazillionaire, I would pay Adobe whatever they wanted to port their products to Linux. I know, whine, whine, Wine. But, its not the same. I spend all day with Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver open. I have tried Ubuntu many times: Every time windows pisses me off "for the last time". But alas, unless I get a new machine dedicated to CS3, then I have no option than to use broken Windrrrs. I would love a mac, but I love building systems way too much. I love Ubuntu. I just wish it could handle what I need. Outside of Adobe products, I would never touch Windrrrs again. Anyone out there that has successfully used adobe products on Ubuntu, please let us know.

Middlesbrough cops, goons and clerks grab and detain photographer for shooting on a public street
April 22, 2008 6:31am
This bullshit is seriously pissing me off. As a profi photographer, I simply do not understand why some group of photographers in London, or anywhere in the world where this is happening, do not organize a flash mob of 50-200 people to show up where these 'atrocities' (no disrepect to actual human atrocities) occur and just stand around in said mob shooting everything in site. This has got to stop and has got to stop now. Damn I wish I was in England and could and would definitely organize this when it happens...

Are you addicted to blazing-fast internet?
April 21, 2008 12:24pm
I left the states nearly a year ago to work in Munich, and they have good connections here. At least they advertise good connections. The equipment they use for their internet(its all DSL here, which sucks) seems to bottle the connections. I was used to blazing fast connections in Oregon, but now, despite the advertised 15 mbps connection, seems to be capped at 250kbps per computer. Its pathetic. Being a designer and programmer, all I care about really(torrents aside) is upload speed. Its atrocious here. Latency is always sky high, and its hard to work when you are always waiting on the connection. Can't we just get a system that equals our needs? What is odd is how amazing fast the speeds are in Asia, and with so low costs its just silly.

Pad
Sl. Bag
Stove
Pot(s)
Fuel
Purifier
Tent/Shelter
First aid
You are bringing so many things that are extraneous and extremely heavy, i.e. the electronics...but that is the purpose of the trip. You have to cut down on everything else. Lay it all out, and then just decide what you can live without. And, hopefully you had your pack fitted, as 80-90% of the weight of your pack should be resting on your hips...the shoulder straps are largely for stabilization.
At the end of the day, you are carrying an extra 10-15 lbs of gear that would not normally find its way in the wild. Break often, and I wish you the best.
Can't wait to hear how glad you will be to take the pack off when you are done.

UK man hassled by cop for not having a "camera license"
April 17, 2008 2:31pm
Gaia DAMNIT! I know there are the Photographers bill of rights in the States..., but is there anyone out there who can find out what the actual legalities are in Europe and on other continents? As a photographer, I have never been hassled while living in Germany, except when on the subway(u-bahn), but to their credit they do have information posted that you can't shoot images of any kind while on the system...which is admittedly slightly stoopid...I am so sick of hearing what is going on in England. I simply don't understand why photographers(cellphone and pocketcam and SLR owners) are not flash mobbing the sites and areas that are hassling the photogs to teach these damn ass****'s a lesson! Folks, when situations like what has been happening lately in England are occurring, we must all rise up and show up en force with hundreds of people shooting images of the 'forbidden' zones. Its just laughable, with how many cctv's are monitoring the streets in England that they would ever have the nerve to suggest you can't be in public and take a picture!

Photo of honor system at bookstore in Ojai, CA
April 14, 2008 12:42pm
Here in Munich, so many things are on the honor system: All public transportation, all newspaper machines, fields of flowers, veggie stands during each season. The thing is, it totally works. No one cheats the systems, by and large. People here have a high regard for honesty. Crime is virtually non-existent. People actually take pride in paying their taxes here - and also in voting. Voting is big time. I was talking to a few Germans about the recent Munich mayoral election. There was something like an 80% turnout of registered voters...and they were disgusted with how low the turnout was.
In order to have an honor system, you first have to have honor.
Digitized Post-It Notes for Alzheimer's Patients
April 11, 2008 12:06pm
I know this may sound trite,(my mom passed away from Alzheimers) on the surface this seems legit and has an application. However, unless this is mounted 12 inches in front of the head in some sort of odd carrot and stick setup, people that have a hard time remembering things, where things are, etc...I mean, whats the point? It needs wings and at the appropriate time, fly to the owner and tap them on the forehead to remind them, this is something you need to pay attention to. Seems like a perfect thing for people that are forgettful, not people with Alzheimers.
Vegan strippers
March 30, 2008 12:13pm
Yakta, you are the last person who should be criticizing anyone for an unconstructive comment. The only thing lame here is your perspective. You seem to be trying to force a point upon me that I am not (and never was) trying to make. You vegan? Great. Your diet causes the death of animals. Yes, less than a meat based diet. But, in the end, animals still die to create your food. You seem to not want to admit to this.
Following your trend of pointless arguments, which have nothing to do with the real discussion at hand..and nothing to do with anything for that matter.....Hitler was a vegetarian.
BTW....I have not eaten meat in about 4 years. For health reasons. But, I find your platform, full of guano.
Vegan strippers
March 29, 2008 9:30am
Yakta
My 'argument' was neither lame, nor, an argument at all. I am all for people eating how they choose. I stated that twice. But the holier than thou vegans and vegetarians who do not eat meat for on a 'cruelty to animals' platform, are simply ignoring the fact that the very fruits and vegetables that they are eating caused the deaths of animals in their production. This is not an argument. This is a fact. I am sorry if you find 'facts' to be lame. Yes, eating meat does indeed require extraneous amounts of food to produce it. ..and that is ridiculous.
So, my very lame 'argument' as you perceive it is thus:
-Eating meat causes animals to die
-Not eating meat still causes animals to die.
Hurling insults is not part of a discussion. Thats what leads to an argument. Maybe you will one day learn the difference.
The article you posted is also so full of holes - on both sides of the fence.

#16, Yes, that is why I said in my post, I can understand why people do it for health reasons! And I take issue with the notion that is not preachy, nor holier than thou. I have no issue with anyone eating anyway they want. But, to suggest that anyone should or does do it on a 'cruelty to animals' platform, just makes no sense.
Vegan strippers
March 27, 2008 11:03am
I love eating vegetarians.(they taste better?) I love vegan food. But people that preach the way of life crack me up. I can understand eating that way for health reasons...but honestly, the cruelty to animals argument does not hold any water whatsoever. Tell a Veggie or Vegan to go spend a week on a farm. They will see how many animals are killed in the planting, cultivation, and harvesting of vegetables. Is a deer's life worth any less than a cows? Is a rabbits life worth less? A snake, a mouse, hedgehog, caterpillar, ant, whathaveyou, worth any less? Literally gabillions and gabillions of animals are killed in the production of fruits and vegetables. The cruelty argument is hogwash. In fact, the less vegetables you eat, the less animals you are indirectly responsible for killing.

Major update to Miro, the free/open Internet TV client
March 21, 2008 4:00am
Update: After vigorous searching, trying every fix under the sun, just about to give up on Miro for good, the last of 9 fixes that I tried finally solved the problem. I have never, ever, made so much effort to get faulty software to work. But, I write this as Miro streams gloriously in the background...finally. Yeah Miro!
Major update to Miro, the free/open Internet TV client
March 21, 2008 3:15am
I really, really want to use this product...but it has issues. I used it with much satisfaction from when it was Democracy player, until V 1.0 was released. After a major update at the end of last year(i think thats when it was) Miro would no longer open. Uninstalled. Reinstalled. Still would not open. Un/Re again. No dice. Searched forums, Miro Message boards. Found loads of people that had the same fix. No word whatsoever from developers on a fix. So frustrating, as it worked so beautifully when it worked. Today I see this post, and assume that they had acknowledged the issue and had fixed it. Downloaded the new version. Installed it. Opened it...or tried to. Was greeted with "You found a bug! Please tell us about it!" And the damn thing still would not open. Miro...please solve the issue...whatever in the hell it is.
Phantom Keystroker prank device
March 19, 2008 10:48am
There needs to be an accompanying website, where you could, say, convince someone that the problem was not with the machine, but, say, them 'giving off to much electrical energy, picked up by the keyboard or mouse. " Oh yes, I have heard of this before, You have (give it some esoteric name) and its rare, you need to expel your extra electricity, (or whatever ailment you think up) and the problem should go away..." Send them to the website, which then sends them off to expel their demons, then you remove the device. Replace as needed. Use sparingly. And often...

Interesting anti-graffiti sign
March 10, 2008 10:30am
"...was just reading somewhere online that cave painting was actually graffiti by adolescent males of that time...so that would make this very hip being that it's one of the oldest known art forms of man!..." Thanks Rootzz
From Wikipedia: (thanks again Rootzz)
R. Dale Guthrie[1] has studied not only the most artistic and publicized paintings but also a variety of lower quality art and figurines, and he identifies a wide range of skill and ages among the artists. He also points that the main themes in the paintings and other artifacts (powerful beasts, risky hunting scenes and the over-sexual representation of women in the Venus figurines) are to be expected in the fantasies of adolescent males, who made a big part of the human population at the time. According to Merlin Stone in her book When God Was a Woman, many scholars and archaeologists impose modern sexist views on ancient findings. Considering the prevalence of Goddess worship (beginning between 7,000 and 25,000 BC), it is much more probable that art depicting the fullness of a woman's body was not a teenage male's fantasy but reproductions done in praise of women by artists of either sex. As with all prehistory, it is impossible to be certain because of the relative lack of material evidence and the many pitfalls associated with trying to understand the prehistoric mindset.

Krups BeerTender Bringing Nasty Draught Heineken to U.S. Kitchens
January 9, 2008 7:56am
I must take issue with the US being the richest and most exciting beer culture in the world, and cannot fathom why only Belgium is grandfathered in. I have been living in Munich off and on for a few years, and let me tell you that this is mecca for beer. The most popular brew in Bavaria(greater Mecca) is Augustiner. It outsells the next best seller two to one. It has been brewed for well over 600 years. And on top of this, they have NEVER advertised. America, I admit, is the king of tasteless, heartless, "I am only drinking it to get drunk" beer. Look at the top 5 most popular beers in the US. All Crap. Some of the craft brews in the States are good. Some of them make me choke. Its seems like a contest to see how much flavor can be crammed into twelve ounces.
In Germany, nary a business deal is agreed upon unless beer is present. Politicians are often seen holding a tall glass of beer...in political ads! This year, over 7 million people attended Oktoberfest, truly the beer Olympics. They have lower per capita rate of alcoholism, drunk driving deaths, etc. Germany has no equal regarding beer culture, taste, and history.
