Documentary examines possibility of US dollar collapse
March 19, 2008 10:22pm
My understanding of inflation is as follows:
Creating money for the purpose of paying off existing debt causes our dollar to devalue against other dollars because suddenly the same amount of goods coming overseas are being exchanged for less value from us.
---
If we want to stabilize our situation, we need to:
a) Pull out from the war (and stop spending elsewhere to stop increasing the debt)
b) Produce all basic needs locally
c) Export more to other countries than we import
After stabilization, if we want to increase the dollar in value we need to:
a) Change the world's perception of our nation for the better.
b) Leave a lasting impression of the quality that 'Made in America' items have
c) Do A and B honestly, so that that have a real impact.

Scotland Yard wants DNA samples from 5-year-olds in case they grow up to be criminals; Oyster card records to become part of "war on terror"
March 17, 2008 4:20pm
@#31, Bingo! If you can't find any more enemies outside your doors or the enemies aren't worth fighting anymore, then bring the battle home.
Scotland Yard wants DNA samples from 5-year-olds in case they grow up to be criminals; Oyster card records to become part of "war on terror"
March 17, 2008 4:00am
How soon until they get arrested at the age of 5 for having 'potentially problematic' DNA?
Tibet: more deaths, injuries in Lhasa as crackdown grows

For shame! It never stops.

TSA: laptops will stop making planes explode if you just build a bag like this one
March 5, 2008 12:55pm
"How can we make the TSA more profitable so that Democrats don't shut down our operations when they get in office?"
"Uh... sell people stuff that they have to buy so that they can get in the airport!"
Why hardware ebook readers are a dead end (for now, anyway)
March 5, 2008 7:00am

Voters are told pen had "invisible ink"
February 7, 2008 6:07pm

US Customs TSA confiscating laptops
February 7, 2008 6:07pm
Can't you just refuse to get on the flight? I would call my boss and ask for advice. Maybe they could mail the laptop and then attempt to re-enter the security line?
TSA apologizes to "blogesphere" for arbitrary gadget screenings
February 6, 2008 8:50pm
I appreciate that they are improving, but I think the post is sort of amateur and unprofessional. Maybe they need a copy editor?

February 5, 2008 8:57pm
Traveling consultants have little choice but to eat out.
Also, are you going to have everyone compute their BMI upon entering the restaurant?
Also, for some it is a genetic disorder.
New Arbitrary TSA requirement: all electronics out of your bag (cables, too)
February 1, 2008 12:59pm
No, this is not a requirement. They want you to take all large portable electronics out, not random little things. I flew from ATL to LGA yesterday night... nothing different from the ordinary.
Security vs. Privacy is really Control vs. Liberty
January 29, 2008 6:28pm
The temptation to use private information against a person is too great. I see information as a threat to my personal security, regardless of whose hands it resides in.
But given the 'ordered' nature of governments, I think that most would choose to have access to vast amounts of data as opposed to ignoring it. The difference TODAY is that access to this information is simply too easy to obtain. Privacy is a luxury. Who is going to go back to using paper systems when they have access to paperless ones?
Books that make you dumb: chart
January 28, 2008 7:16am
Any number of those books could also be on the list of 'favorite books of intelligent people.' This strikes me as the kind of chart intended to make an intelligent person angry.
Healthy 29 year old man dies after police tase him
January 17, 2008 10:43am
Coming from a family with a history of heart disease on both sides, even though I have been deemed "healthy" by my doc, this scares the f~ck out of me! Say I did get tasered, would my heart still be healthy afterwards even if I didn't die.
And why is being tasered multiple times even necessary?
Vegetarian survival kit
January 8, 2008 10:57am
I think that canned beans go bad faster than the dried ones. Last I checked, dried goya beans are less than $2 so it doesn't hurt to stock them. And they take up less space than the canned variety. Also stock a basic water filter so you can make water to soak them in.
Record industry practices revisionism about music recording
December 31, 2007 12:22pm
That's just silly. There's no way it's illegal to listen to music you already own in any format you want. Just look at the slingbox.
