Medical Marijuana and minors

Milt Stein's Supermouse -- better than Carl Barks?
June 28, 2008 4:44am
First thoughts were 'is that a MightyMouse predecessor/superseder'.
Then I was suprised to find BOTH first appeared in 1942 (Super = comic, Mighty = screen).
Infact, 'MightyMouse' was originally called 'SuperMouse' until they discovered eachothers existance.
And they wear the same outfits (parodying SuperMan).
Can't see any lawsuits (though i'm not really going too deep).
"What are the chances of that happening? Eh!"

I agree, but to add for the sake of it: The Japanese tradition and upbringing is more tightly nit, hence the influence is a lot greater.
For 'christian' countries, most have been effectively corrupted through history - to them it's nothing more than a statement, than that of a way of life.
In relation to what you say of the actions of a Shinto influenced culture, True christians would also be highly respective of their neighbours and environment (would see others as part of the world family, etc). Just these days, it's so watered down and not the 'norm' is western countries, that it's rarely seen and even down-trodden.
Same goes for many other cultures.
(FYI - is not a religious statement, this is a culture statement).
British tax authority lost 25 million households records because privacy isn't a priority there
June 26, 2008 1:07am
Nobody states on any of the lost disc (of which is suddenly so common - probably hundreds in the wild now!), if they were encrypted or not?
Not one artical (i've seen) in the press, web, etc, even questions this?
It's certainly not difficult to encrypt, rendering the disc useless to all but the recepitant.
Case in point - our daily backups need to be taken off-site on a physical medium (insurance purposes).
Anyone finding the unit will get a funky free drive and random data.
Cost to our business to create the scheme - a couple of drives and a few hours pay - less than a couple of hundred!
(Yes, I know nothing is ever 100% safe, but
in most cases, 99.99% of people are just not going to bother trying)
If these 'lost' disc's were effectively useless in the wild, I wonder if it would even be news-worthy?
If anything it would be dig at the mail system, rather than a panic apology.
Why women quit technology careers
June 20, 2008 1:08am
Although being a (male) programmer in a male-only IT department, I can only say that the chauvinists are wasting a very strong worker of the team!
Seeing the other departments, women have a longer attention span, actually 'want' to work, aren't afraid of asking questions, tend to be better team palyers and have a better time keeping record. (And looking up for a second, I would hazard a guess they'd be 100x tidier than the desks around me!)
We have no women in our department because we have had no successful applicants (skills beyond 'Word/Excel').
It sure would be nice to have an intelligent conversation too.
Virgin Media UK working with record industry to spy on and threaten downloaders
June 16, 2008 3:40am
@ #10
I stand corrected!
This show's the Virgin franchise is brave - because to some people (not everyone), if they get messed about by one 'Virgin' company, they tend to steer clear (or best be wary) of another.
All because they share a logo.
Baby bounces gleefully to mom's banjo playing
June 13, 2008 3:15am
A Boing Boing'er in the making ;-)
I think I had a bouncer as a baby (Jackie Wilson's 'Reet Petite' was my weapon of choice.)
So did my sister.
We can both walk/dance no problem.
I can't see a massive difference in physical fit from a 'bouncer' to a garden/park 'swing' - other than one going up/down and the other forward/backward. The seats for babies are pretty much the same and the generations either side of mine have no problems.
Hoarding gas is an explosively bad idea
June 9, 2008 8:15am
Ken:
It was more tounge-in-cheek; correct and sealed containers I see no problem with, but the fact these people appeared to have them simply 'covered' just seemed stupid.
However, to quote source: "The worst-case scenario would have been a vapor explosion", suggests they were either sealed or vented, otherwise this would probably had happend sooner!

Sealed, fuel rated containers, yes. But in jugs with cloth rags?
Did they not at least get headaches nor reek from the smell?
UK govt's "What to do about fraud" page "withheld because of exemptions in the Freedom of Information Act"
June 9, 2008 2:08am
Just on a whim, I checked the 'way-back-when machine'. Interestingly, we can see (from our point of view) the page has been updated with more of those lines.
So what Simon states above about being for 'internal' staff makes complete sense - the 'page' exists, but the data is internal. View the page on a whitelisted address/computer/login, and the true content appears.
Possibly.
Virgin Media UK working with record industry to spy on and threaten downloaders
June 9, 2008 1:00am
Don't forget, Virgin is also a major record label - so it's bound to have a biased/protective franchise.
I'm more suprised it's happened 'after' it sold off the record stores though.
Perhaps it was 'persuaded' into it's actions by it's shoulder-rubbing peers.
LucasArts says old adventure games "impossible" on DS, SCUMM says "lolwut?"
June 4, 2008 2:56am
I think I get what the fuss is about.
We who play the ScummVM stuff, all have 'dev' (hehe) carts, with 1GB+ storage, costs roughly £30 all in.
Plays great.
Personally, I have Sam & Max and DOTT on the same cart, along with all my DS games. 2GB, all games, room to spare.
A real nintendo dev team is tied to certified stuff, of set constraints - possibly set rules of what is allowed so far as exploiting the hardware.
Also, whereas the ScummVM system works perfectly fine, LucasArts would still have to write (most likely scratch written in the most) their own DS port.
So the 'impossibility' here is L'Arts restrictions on many levels.
Or, it was a totally 'out-there' statement, to get people talking - which in turn would lead them to people mentioning ScummVM!
Infact, to jump back a few paragraphs, it was the other week Nintendo or 3rd party affiliate, that announced a 'download cart'. Practically the same as our carts with a flash card slot, to download DS games from Nintendo! So even Nintendo don't pretend there's a fixed limitation on what the DS is able to do.
GRADED: The Worst '10 Worst Consoles' List of All Time
June 4, 2008 2:35am
Was given an 'Intellivision' by my neighbour; collecting retro consoles/computers, it was a pretty cool lump. But as for gaming (it had football [soccer]), it was barely minutes of 'fun'!
I think I have the entire back catalog of Vectrex games too (about 9 i think), but no gels - pic shows them, but no mention - the gels turn the B/W screen into patches of colour. No gel = squiggly lines on a tv.
As for the Wii - You need (real, not web) friends to make it worthwhile.
I do, and it is!
RTFM: 19/20 returned gadgets work just fine
June 4, 2008 2:13am
Bit of a red-tape thing for some.
Like 'Rossindetroit', I can fix most items like that (either physicaly or software).
But some things I prefer to exercise the warrentee, even though you know it's mearly a loose ribbon, etc, I don't want to find myself returning in 6mths due to a real fault, to get told it's been 'tampered with'.
Also i've been there as 'Aliasundercover', again simple fixes, but still warrenteed. Usually things
that intermittantly die!
Routers are the most comman, one digit wrong (usually set to PPPoE instead of PPPoA, etc [UK]), and voila, on eBay as 'faulty'!
Cassette-face watch tells time like a boom box

Recieved mine yesterday. Cool as!
Ordered Friday, arrived tuesday (im in the UK).

Fairly chunky (and I dont like chunky watches), but suprisingly dont feel bad at all.
And yeah - the font could be no other style ;)
SMS data rate is 4x more expensive than data from the Hubble
May 14, 2008 1:45am
It should be 4 to 42 times more expensive:
Quote source: "The data from Hubble could vary between £8.85 and £85 per MB"
Rare as it is, but nice bit of conservative reporting there, i.e. picking the smaller/sensible instead of 'BIG FIGURES', though its probably more realistic to choose the 42x figure, as £85 must be on a bad day surely?
