How to Nap infographic from Boston.com

June 18, 2008 12:21pm

This is awesome, a useful napping cheat-sheet that condenses some of the most practical bits of what I learned about sleep over 2 weeks (a decade ago) in psychology 101 at Cornell University, taught by sleep expert Dr. James Maas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Maas

Totally off-topic but interesting to note: Dr. Maas' son Dan is the genius behind some amazing 3D animations/visualizations done for recent NASA Mars missions, often seen in popular press. http://www.maasdigital.com/gallery.html

Google making a network neutrality detector

June 14, 2008 2:21pm

Very cool. I understand that this might not totally be a philanthropic act on Google's part, as their business model and ability to compete depends quite a lot net neutrality, but still, very cool. I'm looking forward to reading about the inevitable class action lawsuits based on this kind of information gathering.

The response I received from Amazon was oddly similar, and yet not exactly the same, as the one Jake received:

It seems Amazon would rather pass the buck on the DRM issue.

Little Brother goes into its fourth week on the New York Times bestseller list!

Grats Cory! I'm up to Chapter 18 and lovin' it...I'd almost forgotten to make sure my librarian friend ordered it for her library...almost. :)

John McCain vows to continue Bush's illegal warrantless wiretapping program

June 4, 2008 12:27am

I wish I understood how I see these threats to our civil liberties as serious business, and yet my parents buy into our fearmongering nanny state. I'm pretty sure my CS degree had something to do with my POV, but it doesn't help me convince them. I recently got my signed copy of Cory's "Little Brother" in the mail...I'm only partway through, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how the protagonist's efforts to educate his father play out. The story pushes a healthy civil liberties awareness "agenda", but does so with interestingly detailed examples (borderline tutorials) that are practical and innovative. I'm hoping I'll also find some insights about spreading this agenda to the previous generation.

Arthur C. Clarke dead at 90

March 18, 2008 5:14pm

I just recently bought the Rama series for my girlfriend, she's finishing up the last one ("Rama Revealed") at the moment. Clarke's writings helped inspire me, not just in his writing and creativity, but also helped me grow beyond my Catholic upbringing and find happiness in agnonsticism/atheism. Thank you Mr. Clarke, sincerely.

TED 2008: Philip Zimbardo on The Lucifer Effect in Action

I look forward to classes in "healthy skepticism" being offered to young people, just as wellness/sex ed is already.
