Oh please. Anyone who thinks America's plutocrat-friendly, Bush/Reagan-appointed judges are going to let this one fly should give my regards to the tooth fairy.

CNN's Glenn Beck: "people who hate America" losing homes in So CA wildfires

October 23, 2007 7:28pm

Why is this guy still on CNN? Um, because Fox has been kicking CNN's ass in the ratings for years now, maybe? As for the Marines and firefighters, they'll give him a free pass, count on it. Everybody knows It's Okay If You're A Republican. Now if a *Democrat* had said it . . .

PS. If the Democratic Party is now the Democrat Party, are Democrats now Democs?

Copyright office embraces the liberation of the $86K copyright database

It was this sort of frustration with an increasingly complex world that fueled much of the wry humor in "Peanuts". I remember one strip where young Linus was complaining about the rigors of modern life in Kindergarten. You had to be able to say the ABCs, get a drink of water for yourself and cut with scissors. Brother, the things they ask of kids nowadays! Of course, putting ten dollar words in little kids' mouths was that strip's stock in trade. It used to drive Shulz crazy when people would "correct" him for having Linus talk about his "ophthalmologist" when the services he was describing would be rendered by an optometrist. "I use 'ophthalmologist' because it's a funnier word!" he would exclaim, but there were always those who just didn't get it.

I look forward to the next blog post on radical copyright theory so I can post comments about Peanuts. Ahem.

One of the more interesting things about Peanuts back in the day was the way the right wingers claimed it as their own. It was kind of like with South Park nowadays, but even less warranted - Matt Stone is at least on record as saying, "I hate conservatives, but I really #@*%ing hate liberals." Sparky Shulz kept things focused on his own particular emotional palate, but that didn't stop every fundamentalist, luddite, and conformist in the country from claiming Peanuts as their own in the 60s and 70s. Shulz himself was unruffled by it - "I just draw funny pictures", he would say.

Look, what with Dolly Madison, Met Life and the rest of it, it's hard to blame counterculturists for dismissing Peanuts as the work of a hack. But, as Mr. McDonough notes, there was a depth that you could see if you only had eyes. I'm looking forward to seeing what else is written about this new book.

Amazon to launch DRM-free iTunes competitor

August 31, 2007 7:55pm

It's a funny thing about mainstream; when everyone else likes what you like, it's kind of hard to find someone who has it and willingly gives it away. For those ready to delve into the non-mainstream, there are literally hundreds of DRM free files out there to download every week. Heck, even mainstreamers should check it out. Our good friends at Boogie Woogie Flu (shout-out to Boing Boing for introducing me to BWF) have put up Elvis, Dylan, even Springsteen.
