It's an attempt to disprove that bloke's law? Umm the one who said that as the number of comments increases the likelihood of someone bringing up Hitler approaches 1?
Oh crap - I guess I just brought him up.
damnit.
PETA offers $1 million prize for vat-grown meat

I wrote a long comment on this and then got the text entered was wrong bug dagnammit!
Signed in again - retrying... Shorter version of the comment
YESNO (#17) is right on the money. Me I do 1) try to avoid factory farmed meat and 2) Ignore the fact that sometimes I eat factory farmed meat for convenience and the fact that you usually don't know.
Vat Farmed meat is a neat idea. However more practically (at least in the short term), I'd like to see legislation of enforced labelling of meat sources - what is factory farmed vs free range. (And I think it's not unreasonable to outlaw certain farming practices on ethical grounds -- after all we have laws preventing cruelty to pets.)
Then us consumers would be able to make better informed choices and stores / restaurants would have an incentive to use more ethically farmed meat... and farmers would start to see incentives in avoiding factory farming practices...
Unfortunately I don't see anything like that happening any time soon. It's a fringe issue to most people. The stereotype of the irrational, holier than thou, preachy vegetarian is alive and well (thanks in part to some of PETAs crazier ads, like the one comparing farms to Nazi concentration camps), which helps this to remain a fringe issue.
And it is fair to see that it's an issue that gets trumped by healthcare, education, etc...

The collected controversies of William F. Buckley
March 6, 2008 9:23am
It's a bit like the attitudes toward Reagan these days.
I always thought he went down in history as a bit of a disaster. Huge budget deficits, unemployment, homelessness, spending zillions of dollars on Star Wars, which to this day never came to fruition... and didn't he sell arms to Iran (officially an "enemy"), so kind of a traitor or at best a cynical manipulator?
Yet he's now held up as this sort of ideal of what a president should be by the Republican party and respected as a sort of honorable politician by the Dems.
Sorry, I guess that's off topic but it's just echoing the "debate has moved to the right" / "exonerating and haigeographising (if that's a real word) people with some pretty indefensible views"
Pi as music

It's strangely addictive - depending on the scale you pick you can really end up with some good moody background music.
Of course it'll drive you nuts if you leave it running for too long...
How to Spot a Cylon

Man - that "All Along The Watchtower" episode. What the hell were they thinking.
BTW - While we're being pedantic, it always bugged me that they were supposedly indistinguishable from humans except by some complex DNA test cooked up by the dodgy doctor, but had glowing sexy spines, and Boomer even plugged wires right into her arm once... Couldn't you just check their backs for red LEDs? Or check for USB sockets in their arms?

@cvr: Surely you mean "of which I was completely ignorant"?
Sorry sorry. Someone had to though, didn't they?
