RIP, Jeff Healey

My first exposure to him was in the movie Road House. I was so mesmerized by his playing style that I did a little digging and found out he was a real musician and not just an actor.
Still - it's not often you can find a genuine blues man with a Bacon Number of 2...
Starbucks at Guantanamo Bay?

@mastercontroller: At Danang, all we had was the log ride. Oh, how we longed for a Ferris Wheel...
Seriously, though - these are the same asshats who read GitMo menus at Senate hearings and then ordered waterboarding. This is their counter to the accusations of torture: "See - we don't need to beat them up! All they need is a good meal and little down home commercialism and these guys will completely sell out their beliefs!"
That sounds way more disarming than "Well, they told us what we wanted to hear after a year of daily torture..."
Reports of 5th undersea 'net cable cut

At the five severed links mark, you have to wonder if there is something going on. A couple could just be a fluke, but this many seems awfully deliberate.

Yeah, 'cause Yahoo isn't an evil corporation. They have gladly handed over bloggers and journalists to the Chinese government for torture and imprisonment. THEN they lied about it during a Congressional inquiry into their practices.
Okay - Microsoft isn't the Mother Teresa of companies, but none really are. Even Google with their "Do No Evil" mantra got into bed with the Chinese government to do content blocking on their behalf.

Board/card games made from video games -- cataloguing the unfun spawn of twitch games
January 30, 2008 10:04am
There are many highly-rated board games based on their video brethren:
- Age of Mythology
- Railroad Tycoon
- The Pokemon CCG series
- Age of Empires III
- Doom: The Board Game
and others I can't think of at the moment.
Lumping "roll and move" licensing cash ins like the slew that came out for 80s arcade games with the more studied recent fare excludes some excellent games.

CinematicTitanic: Mystery Science Theatre 3000 rides again -- sheer hilarity!
January 14, 2008 9:37am
My all time favorite MST3K was "The Clonus Horror". Dick Sargent as an evil scientist and Peter Graves as a congressman along with the hilarious commentary make it pure movie magic. I really need to get that one on DVD...
Thanks for the update on the new project - I heard about it when they were first pitching it but didn't know the first release was out. My DVD will arrive in about a week. :)

What about Child's Play Charity? (http://www.childsplaycharity.org)
They provide games to children's hospitals to enrich the lives of the kids stuck there. If you've even spent any time there as a kid, you'll understand why this is such a good cause.
It's run by Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade with **zero administrative costs**. They personally absorb any admin costs so all of your donation goes directly to the kids. In addition to money, they also accept donations of new video games and systems (handheld and consoles).

Caricatures are more effective than police sketches
November 26, 2007 12:48pm
They really should adopt William Gibson's idea from "Virtual Light". The cops in his world use a program called "Separated at Birth" that takes a photograph of a suspect and figures out which celebrity they look most like. That way the cops can say, "Hey, have you seen a guy that looks like a young Tommy Lee Jones?"

Although she supposedly said she would rather "kill herself than go to jail", I'm really suspicious about this one. There were a lot of powerful people wrapped up in this, each with enough motive to make sure her stories stayed untold.
