Forbes Traveler on travel scams

August 18, 2008 7:30pm

The "wad of money" trick... ha! In Venezuela, that trick has a variant: the guy offers you some electronic device very cheap -let's say, a video camera. They show you the stuff, you agree with the price, and when it comes to exchange the money for the product, someone else alerts of Police presence. Things rush, and before you notice, the guy hands you a package of the dimensions of your new "camera" and advice you to run 'cause the Police is there. Off course, the package contains an empty box, a brick, a piece of soap, etc.

Venezuelans call this scam "The Chilean Package".

In Chile, we just call it "The Uncle's tale". And it works in a very similar way to the Russian version.

A variant: sometimes an innocent looking old man ask you to look for the number in his Lotto ticket, which turns to be the "big prize" winner number. He tells you that he feels ill, and that he will sell you the winner ticket for any amount you're carrying in your pockets. Off course, these guys have been already following their victim and they know the guy has been in the bank or at a business office and he's carrying a lot of cash. So, when they fall for it -and some people still do!- they go to the Lotto agency and found that their ticket is fake or invalid in some form.

I've never experienced this, but every once in a while a small town newspaper will bring a story about this.

HOWTO: guerrilla t-shirt silkscreening with "5t311a"

August 13, 2008 8:35pm

Interesting discussion here. I've seen grafitti stencils made out of discarded X-rays. Also used for printing shirts.

I used to hand paint my own t-shirts when I was a kid. I remember painting designs by Charged GBH, Cryptic Slaughter, Anthrax, Misfist, even a Helloween shirt for a friend. hehehe. those were the days.

This video is very instructive, I've known the basics of silk-screening since a long time but never really saw someone putting the whole process is such a simple and fun way. Excellent job 5t311a. I think I've fall in love.

Curse of the Crying Boy art print

July 23, 2008 1:33pm

"Correlation DOES NOT EQUAL Causation."

EXACTO! Very well said.

This story has a Latinamerican part.In Chile, where I live, there's similar tales: the "bewitched" or straight diabolic painting of the crying child. It's a different picture, tho. (this one, actually!!
http://forteantimes.com/front_website/gallery.php?id=2715)

Beside the stories of houses on fire, there was others featuring the painting, a mirror, and candles. Supposedly, you put the painting between the burning candles, in front of the mirror (and I'm not sure if you had to put a plate with water in the middle), all this in the middle of the night, and then... you'll see the DEVILS FACE in the mirror!!!

Of course, nobody actually did it...

The Chilean version of the cursed boy painting apparently came from Spain. The artist (Bruno Amadio, maybe?) supposedly painted the portrait of an orphan child. After he finished and left the town, the orphanage house got on fire and burned to the ground...

Simply Audiobooks webstore to carry DRM-free Random House Audio downloads

July 3, 2008 9:11am

This discussion is hardly at a starting point in Chile, but is good to see your experience in the matter. When the moment comes, we will have somewhere to look for ideas and advice.

I guess the alternative would be, in the end, to start new DRM-free distributors / retailers /wholesalers /ventures.

Californian drivers, put your phones down

July 1, 2008 6:06pm

There's a similar law in effect in Chile since many years ago; you have to use a hands-free set.

The weird side is that, at the first stages of this law being enforced, police officers discovered that a lot of drivers used fake plastic (or even wooden) cell phones. They weren't talking, just wanted to be seen with a cellphone in hand.

Duh.

I guess that happens less now that even small kids have cellphones

That Violet Blue thing

July 1, 2008 12:16pm

Violet who?

Maybe I don't spend that much time on the internet to understand this. And maybe that's a good thing.

As far as I'm concerned, this is still one of my favorite blogs.

"I've seen this before, and I still can't help but think it's a little cruel. Imagine if someone froze your iPhone, Macbook, girlfriend, and carkeys in a block of ice and made you lick them out."

LOL at that. But I guess it's true.

I thought it was going to be filled with dog candy or biscuits.

Anyway, "beard lube" makes me think of something you would smear in your beard to make it look better, or smell nice.

DIY cassette tape lamp

June 26, 2008 8:12pm

"Whatever, the stuff I still have on cassette is way to valuable to me to be made into a lamp. "

I feel exactly the same way. Plus, a lot of the tapes I have are not traslucent, or have paper stickers with my handwriting on it.

It could be a good Idea if I ever find like, a bag of unused tapes for a dollar or something like that, in a second hand store or similar.

Spooky, wonderful music CD in Neal Stephenson's new novel

June 24, 2008 11:50pm

I wonder if this will hit the South American bookstores anytime soon, and if will keep this format. Is the music created somehow to accompany the reading of the book?

There's an Argentinian drone/doom band called Sarghuma Incoxis, whose latest CD-EP was released with a short story, intended to be read along with the music. Sadly, I only got part of the music... I'm a lazy bum, I should try to get the full thing.

Social Networking map of the world

May 18, 2008 12:49pm

This stuff shows a lot of Orkut and Hi5 users in South America. I live in Chile and I've never meet actual users of that -unless you consider Hi5 spam as "use".

Well, the map actually shows a blank for Chile and Argentina, so maybe the Orkut thing is true for Brasil. At least here, Facebook is growing very quick among people around 25 yrs old and older. Teenagers seem to prefer Fotolog, which is mainly based in sharing images and comments. Personally I hate it, but teens are crazy about it.
