Water filled plastic bags on trees scare bugs away?

April 15, 2008 6:21pm

#58 "I am sure it works. Do you actually think that thousands of people would be hanging water bags all around if no one ever saw some results? LOL"

Perhaps you're right.

Would thousands of people carry around the foot of a dead rabbit if it didn't improve their luck enough that it outweighed the fact that they were carrying around the foot of a dead rabbit? Nah. People aren't that dumb.

#55: "This doesn't sound too far-fetched to me, considering that it's thought that flying insects use the horizon as a reference to stabilize their flight"

Thought by whom? There are many places, including the indoors, where an insect can not see a horizon. They seem to do alright despite that, and certainly don't avoid those places. A quick google search only shows a few mentions of using the horizon that way, but not of requiring the horizon for navigation. It's just, possibly, one of the things they use to find their way around.

They're one of those bands that can immediately put a smile on my face.

"Medical necessity" defense a success in Texas pot possession trial

March 27, 2008 2:41pm

This is a good beginning. Hopefully it won't stop here.

Fingertip biometrics at Disney turnstiles: the Mouse does its bit for the police state

March 15, 2008 1:52pm

I could understand when they did this for the expensive year long full park passes, as those would really easy to give to friends going on vacation when you're at home, and could easily lose the parks a lot of money. But doing it to keep people from scamming the park out of the price of a day pass is kind of absurd.

Suspicious beard terrorist poster parody imitates life

I could understand if it was a sinister mustache, but a bushy beard?
Also: If beards are outlawed only blah blah blah.

Why hardware ebook readers are a dead end (for now, anyway)

March 5, 2008 1:30pm

I still want an Iliad.
At least they're starting to show up on ebay. Don't these poorly treated, factory mangled chinese peasants care that I want a cool dealy to read books on that doesn't cost as much as a decent laptop?

In the Future, All Toast Will Take 15 Minutes to Depress

Orwell's ill-tempered rant on bookselling

January 25, 2008 11:38am

It's somewhat different in content, but Orwell's "Keep the Aspidistra Flying," about a failed poet/current bookstore worker's contempt for basically everything is a great read.

"Readius" Fold-Up e-Paper Reader is Now a Phone, Too

January 22, 2008 12:46pm

Ohhhhh dang. Now that is the kind of thing I have been waiting for with electronic ink. Between this sort of thing, and the ever decreasing physical size of solid state memory, it won't be long before you can carry the entire library of congress and something to read it on in your shirt pocket. I think I need to be alone with some kleenex for a few minutes.

Ford: Car owners are pirates if they distribute pictures of their own cars

January 13, 2008 11:34pm

A lot of times with crazy crap like this, it turns out that it was the law firm that represents the company acting on their own, and the company doesn't even know what is going on. I remember this happening with someone on a website I hang around involving Nintendo's law firm, and when Nintendo did find out, they were very quick to make apologies (and if I remember correctly, make with a free Nintendo of some sort for those who were wrongly attacked by the law firm.).

Perry Bible Fellowship webcomic book does good!

January 6, 2008 12:44am

Easily one of the best webcomics out there (also, easily one of the most frustrating to read. damn his rare updates). I really need to get around to buying the book.

Mutant kewpie doll cell phone charms
