Sweded Lord of the Rings

LOVED it. Of course, I had to explain what all the noise was to people at work and also the concept of "sweding." My hubby and I saw "Be Kind, Rewind," which gave me some gentle laughs. I enjoyed it.

Okay, I know this might seem a stupid question and I fully accept any scorn and derision that comes as a result of it: Is this for real or just Photoshopped?
If it's real, God bless'em, everyone. That takes some cajones.
If it's Photoshopped, it's still doggone funny!
Milk jug chandelier
February 26, 2008 8:52am
@#4 We used to have a local store here in town (multiple locations) that used to sell milk in bags. It was great. They had this open top pitcher you'd slide the bag into and then just cut off a corner. Was a lot cheaper than the regular jug milk and my single-parent mom used to buy it that way.
I don't know why they stopped doing it. Maybe cause you couldn't actually close the milk once you opened it unless you put it in a Tupperware-type pitcher.

The horrors of plant-animal hybridization
February 20, 2008 10:13am
Let me ask a couple questions.
1. Will this plant come true from seed - as in, with the same genetic structure its forebearers had with the human gene - or will African farmers need to buy seed from the seed companies every year?
If it doesn't come true from seed, aren't we putting them in the same Catch-22 position many third-world farmers are already in, beholden to Industrial Ag because of Terminator Technology?
2. Will it grow without a huge amount of chemical inputs and special fertilizers?
I ask because I'd be curious if the human gene might switch off some of the plant's naturally occurring defenses against predators and disease. Or would having a human gene open it up to a whole new host of disease possibilities, like (tongue in cheek) chicken pox?

Senate votes to immunize telecoms over domestic spying
February 12, 2008 12:59pm
I sent my Senator (Stabenow, D-MI) an email about this issue back in mid-January and got this email back:
------
Thank you for contacting me regarding warrantless wiretapping and domestic surveillance programs by the National Security Agency (NSA). I share your deep frustration about these and other actions by the Bush Administration.
Last August, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) introduced legislation that endorsed the Bush Administration's warrantless wiretapping program. The bill passed just two days after it was introduced without the necessary hearings and debate needed to ensure the civil liberties of Americans were protected. I voted against this bill because I have grave concerns about this program and its oversight.
The McConnell bill will expire in a few weeks. I believe Congress has a responsibility to protect the American people, but like you, I understand that some of these measures may threaten certain civil liberties. In the war on terrorism, it is vital to ensure that we do not sacrifice the very liberties we are fighting to protect.
Telecommunication companies that cooperated with the NSA program are now seeking immunity from lawsuits related to their involvement in the program. Currently this legislation is pending in the Senate. I will keep your strong views in mind as this and other related legislation come before me for a vote.
-------
After seeing her vote, I sent this in reply:
You voted NAY! How could you!? Giving Telecomms immunity is another knife in the back of the American people by an Administration that has already prostituted our Constitution. Wiretapping without a warrant is ILLEGAL!!
I am extremely disappointed in your vote. What they did was illegal, end of story.

Not very professional or whatever, but this whole issue is so black-and-white to me that it is infuriating!
Coffee and cigarettes, sold together at last (in Japan)
January 21, 2008 1:08pm
I was stationed in Japan back in the late 80's. Me and my friends were astounded at their vending machines. "What's this?! Iced coffee in a can!? OMG, who would drink coffee in a can! Those crazy Japanese!" Yeah...crazy like a fox! :D

RideAccidents: roundup site for carny ride accidents
January 3, 2008 1:00pm
My husband and I rode (one of) his favorite rides this summer: The Tobaggan. Scary. Rickety, squeezed in like sardines despite both of us being thin. I had wondered why it had seemed to disappear from midways since we were kids (late 30's, both of us) and now I know. Today's "normal-sized" Americans wouldn't fit in it. My 6-ft, 150-lb husband barely fit!
Making vanilla extract
January 2, 2008 12:43pm
I love the idea of this and I really appreciated the instructor name-dropping where he got his beans. Their prices are unbelievably good compared to a spice catalog/website I've used in the past. I used vanilla at least once a week, more if I'm baking and I love to bake. Organic vanilla, for a 2-oz bottle cost me $6.89. :choke:

You know, I am so torn on stuff like this. On one hand, you have men earning a living, which seems like it could be hard in India with their population and all (somebody edumacate me on this). On the other, I hate the idea that these men don't have the safety equipment that could keep them safer. Though, as #2 mentioned, if that hot drop of metal falls on a safety boot, will it help??
I just read the high summer temperature can be almost 113F. Can you imagine working in a forge at that temperature?!
