I have a lot of fondness for Edgar Rice Burroughs (even though some of the Tarzan books are super-racist), so I'm always glad to see him get attention.

Xopher #42:
Heh, good one! I forgot about Godzilla vs. Hedorah (or, as I call it, "Godzilla vs. the Shit Monster").

Anyone who makes these kind of demands of their bridesmaids must have a really ugly soul.

Yikes! This goes beyond being a "bridezilla." I would say this is more like "bride-Ghidorah" or something else.
It's stuff like this that makes me a little allergic to weddings in general.
As price of fuel soars, so does a dirigible renaissance?

I wonder if riding a Zepplin would be a more gentle experience than an airliner. I once got really airsick on a commuter plane that kept circling the San Luis Obispo airport during a storm, and it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life.
I love the idea of being able to go across the Atlantic or Pacific on a blimp or Zepplin.

Ben Stein: "science leads you to killing people"
May 2, 2008 9:14am
It really irritates me when people thoughtlessly attack science like Ben Stein has started doing recently. Science can be put to bad uses (and, of course, so can religion), but I see the most basic function of science as a means of attempting to understand the universe in which we live, and I think that's a profoundly human thing.
I used to like Ben Stein, but not anymore.

Here's the perfect audio accompaniment for this story, "The Gnome" from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition:

If you like creepy gnomes, be sure to watch Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now.

The thing on the cover on the left looks a lot like the big robot from the old Japanese alien invasion movie The Mysterians:

I meant "left-to-right," not "right-to-left."

Ack! I've been reading manga for over ten years, but I've never been able to get used to reading "unflipped" manga right-to-left. I agree with Maggie that doing a "manga" that was originally written in English is pretentious. If I can't tell where the hell I'm supposed to start reading, that's a problem.
Come to think of it, I remember reading a Comics Journal article that argued pretty convincingly that presenting manga "unflipped" really doesn't make them more "authentic."

Anyone else think that it looks a little like Barbara Steele in Mario Bava's Black Sunday (1960)?

I would refer anyone who argues that Burroughs "couldn't write for shit" to Richard A. Lupoff's excellent Master of Adventure: The Worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
