While I appreciate the recycled materials aspect of these, it seems that $5. can purchase a non-crushed-in-bag option that is dishwasher-safe.
Lawsuit about risk of CERN and parallel universe
March 30, 2008 12:12pm
Um... so, let's say the Earth did end up in a parallel universe... If it's the whole earth and everything on it, what's the difference for our daily life? Maybe we lose a few people in space, our moon and tides, have a different (or no) sun, we all die from freezing, or are eaten by Weavils... I don't see this as much of a problem, it's not like we'd live long enough to regret it... In fact, maybe we should take action and do this - invading the parallel universe - before they invade us! No one way rift into Cardiff for me! Let's preempt their universe! Maybe they have WMDs or something!
Unusually-named toy doll sets
March 30, 2008 12:04pm
I'm just upset that my future children will be forced to use that unrealistic Victorian house! Where is the downstairs?! Let's not let our children grow up thinking "everyone gets to be in upstairs society".

Why free reading is important
March 2, 2008 12:37am
Uh... libraries?
(But seriously, I think free web-publishing of books is great.)

Those shoes are neat... but the model in the red dress (a few pictures later) has a serious mole issue on her back! She really should have those checked out by a doctor. Ick!
Tic-Tac-Toast stamps game-surfaces onto toast
February 22, 2008 6:36am
Yeah, there's nothing better than toast that has gotten cold, been touched by many hands, and has a mess of fixings on it that you did not choose. I'm pretty sure that as a 3-26 year old I would not have been willing to eat the finished game. And now I'd only do it out of politeness if necessary.

Library starts to include CC licensed editions of books in collection
February 21, 2008 8:39am
Seattle Public Libraries has a wonderful zine collection at the Central location. Most of them probably do not come from "legitimate publishers."
Bluetooth-enabled "CharmingBurka"
February 14, 2008 10:17pm
Great! Now we have an excuse to stone women walking in public even when they're wearing a burka and walking with a man. "Of course she was a whore! And the man too! He allowed the bluetooth signal to transmit!"

Project Chanology continues.
February 12, 2008 10:20pm
Librarians are trained not to censor books for the ideas in them. We do however "select books for removal" based on complex criteria for serving the needs of the community to our best abilities.
Full shelves are not good for circulation. Browsing and book locating works best when there is ample open space. There are lots of valid reasons to remove individual books (not the title as a whole) from a library.
There are also good reasons not to circulate donated books. For instance, they can be sold at library book sales for money to support the library. Also, it often costs more to catalog and process new books than it does to purchase them. Donating books supports libraries, but it doesn't mean they'll end up on the shelves.
Project Chanology continues.
February 12, 2008 5:40pm
@Takuan - if you don't want something in a library, just make sure it doesn't circulate. Items that get checked out less than 5 times a year tend to get discarded/sold. (Unless they are timeless classics.)
HOWTO make burlesque pasties with LED nipples
February 9, 2008 7:09pm
Those are far too high up on that kitty's chest to cover cat nipples. And there ought to be a few more pasties too if we're going to be proper about this.
Murakami takes graffitied Murakami billboard
February 5, 2008 4:58pm
#8 - I've camped with people who reuse billboard vinyl as triangular flaps to cover each triangular section of a large dome. That vinyl will stand up to about 3 or 4 years of 51 weeks of storage, and 1 week/year of intense sun and corrosive dust. After that, it tears easily, warps, and generally becomes unusable. I therefore question whether it would be worth shipping it to refugees... unless they used it as a water-proofing layer under another layer to keep it shaded from the sun.
Full body pyjamas designed to stop itching
February 5, 2008 4:51pm
What about people with long hair? Does it go down the back of the shirt/hood? That sounds itchy.
Board/card games made from video games -- cataloguing the unfun spawn of twitch games
January 30, 2008 8:13am
My older brother got that game around '84 or so. Not only were the marbles great to play with, and the sound and feeling of crunching them up fantastic, but for the first time I could play a game WITH my brother. (Rather than just watching him play on our Commodore 64 till he got bored and then finally getting my turn. Not that he didn't hog board games too... :P )

Using rabies to deliver drugs directly to the brain
January 12, 2008 8:11pm
Oh, but to be fair to everyone else, @#9: pets don't get rabies now only because rabies has been virtually wiped out in dozens of countries around the world due to immunization practices. Please see this.
Using rabies to deliver drugs directly to the brain

To everyone, excepting Mr./Ms. highly-rational #9...
Rabies has a cure! You can get a ton of shots! It's not the end of the world!
Though I'd also like to hear more about the research I've seen about the use of the drug Ecstasy to cross the brain-barrier. Original Article here..

Vancouver 2010 Olympic mascots include a Sasquatch
November 29, 2007 11:54pm
Stefan @18 - If sasquatch can have giant boots, of course orcas can have hats... and it clearly has to be an orca hat, it's much too big for Sumi.
Vancouver 2010 Olympic mascots include a Sasquatch
November 29, 2007 6:29pm
Sumi is also a mythological creature (the all are). He has thunderbird arms and bear legs. Cute button noses are the least of his physiological issues! How are his wings supposed to lift heavy bear legs?

@#8&9 - It doesn't matter if you're left or right handed or if you are wearing a watch on your left wrist already. The twisty knobs are on the right side of the device. So unless you want to twist your left hand into uncomfortable positions to advance the thing, you need to wear that on your left hand.
Plus, if you own that, you probably also have a pocket watch. So your left wrist is available.
