Videos of the worst pop songs ever
May 1, 2008 6:35am
This is the stupidest post I think I've ever seen on boingboing. So a pop song is automatically terrible because it has sad subject matter? I guess we'd better add "Yesterday", "Fire and Rain", and "Only Living Boy in New York" to the list.
*Rolls Eyes* What's the new post going to be?
"OMG DONT U HATE TEH RAIN?"
"I NO IT GETS ME TOO WET"
"ROFL ME 2 MY MOM SAYS I HAVE 2 STAY ISNIDE IT SUX SHE SUX I HATE MY MOM"
"RAN IS THE BALLS"
2001 profile of "Bill Ayers, unrepentant former Weather Underground revolutionary"

Except Bill Ayers didn't kill anyone with a bomb. Sure, he might've caused destruction to public property, but the only people killed by the WU were blown up by accident, and they were WU members themselves.
You can't blame him for an accident in a NYC townhouse when he wasn't there. Bill Ayers didn't kill anyone.

I've been in a seminar taught by Bill Ayers. He's a very nice (and now much older man) who made mistakes as a young man. That a lot of you are trying to define him by what you've read in an article about one very small portion of his life is somewhat appalling.
Perfect length for a pop song: 2:42
April 17, 2008 12:34pm
The logic here is stupid if for no other reason than every track mentioned here has several lengths depending on album or recording. For example, my copy of "Have You Seen the Rain?" by CCR comes in at 2:40.
And yes, it's obviously a joke. But a stupid one.

Sex offender ordered to keep warning signs on car and house
March 26, 2008 5:28pm
I am making many errors tonight.
First paragraph should read:
"I have said and said again that I think ANY sexual abuse and rape is wrong."
That was a biggie.

As a homosexual myself, BONEGNAWER, I completely disagree with your point. This has nothing to do with acting on your urges -- I've said and said that I don't think any sexual abuse or rape is wrong. That isn't the issue. And I'm not comparing homosexuality with pedophilia. They are obviously completely different thing.
The point is that pedophiles do not choose to be attracted to children. No matter why they have that desire, most often the actions they take are not malicious but desperate. Yes, they shouldn't be abusing or raping anyone, but imagine if you were told, "You are not allowed to be attracted to who you find attractive, and even if you do hold back and seek help, people will ostracize and judge you simply for your desires." As a lesbian, I would think you would have more sympathy for people who can't help how they feel.
I am not saying anyone who is a sexual offender should get off. I'm saying that making them wear signs detailing their crime is degrading and cruel and unusual punishment. I'm saying that the justice system is supposed to be about rehabilitation, not harassing those whose crimes we have decided are "the worst".
No matter what you say, the judge's sentence is the crime is not about helping the community - it is about branding this man with his crime and forcing him to live under its stigma every day and night. We don't do this for any other crime, and for good reason. It does nothing but fuel ignorant hatred, and it certainly doesn't help this man curb his desires in any way. It is the definition of cruel and unusual punishment, and the judge who passed down the judgment should be removed from his post.

To all those holier-than-thou in this topic: think about if it was as taboo to prefer your gender of choice as it was to be a pedophile. Would you find it easy to "control your urges"? Would you think it fair that you couldn't seek help - having not even come close to abusing anyone in any way, that is - because just have thoughts like you do is enough for people to condemn and ridicule you?
While sexual abuse of any kind is not right, treating pedophiles like they would choose to be an abuser is ignorant and just plain wrong. As I said before, these people often live miserable lives fighting their urges.
I just can't understand a system that has no understanding for abusers. They're not monsters, and without a doubt most if not all of them would change their desires if they could.

I don't understand the world's cruel treatment of pedophiles. Of course they shouldn't be having sex with children, but people act as if these people are malicious monsters -- as if they choose to have these feelings.
We lessen the punishment for murder when the person is found to be mentally ill, but we crucify any sex offender. But if you look at many of them, they have spent miserable lifetimes doing all they can to curb their desires, only to make one mistake and be treated like the scum of the earth. And it isn't like these people get any better regard if they seek treatment or help without doing anything.
Honestly, I am against all kinds of sexual offense, but I find the people who condemn and vilify pedophiles sick. They can't help they're feelings, and if people showed them some compassion and made it feasible for them to seek help, a lot of such abuse might disappear.
Transgender man is pregnant
March 24, 2008 7:33pm
IVAN, it is for health. Maintaining emotional health is just as valid a reason for someone to receive treatment as to as physical health.
By your logic, insurance companies shouldn't cover individuals who use antidepressants or the like because it's "a choice". Or perhaps your point is that gender identity disorder is not real?
Transgender man is pregnant
March 24, 2008 7:22pm
The scary thing about this post is not that there is a lot of ignorance about this issue, but that there are several indignant posters who came in here seemingly to ridicule the transgendered for having the audacity to think they are anything but what their genetic code says.
Life is not black and white, as someone has already said. Hell, I just became an uncle through a relative going through in vitro fertilization, something the Pope just came out and declared a mortal sin.
It's interesting that issues like these seem to prove the fact that most of life's issues come not from malice but ignorance.

Bed built into an "igloo of books"
February 24, 2008 9:28am
When I was getting my first bed set as a kid, the only thing I told my parents that it definitely needed was a bookcase. I, of course, only ended up with one shelf, but it was still an amazing purchase and so useful. I second the idea of turning the books inwards (though it might not look as inviting then) and also taking the structure. It seems a bit claustrophobia (at least, to me).

literal: Being in accordance with, conforming to, or upholding the exact or primary meaning of a word or words.
And yes, they were acting like literal police, as in people who police whether or not something was used in a literal fashion. And while you are likely right that the reason I was mocked was not my choice of wording, the ridicule came in the form of judgements over that word choice.
And while yes, the tone of my initial comment was out of line (and I apologize), I'd say the response I got was equally juvenile.
