UK database blacklist of "suspicious" store clerks includes people never charged or convicted

May 8, 2008 11:55am

This is a copypasta from one of the comments in the BBC's thread.

You can ask they remove your details under the Data protection Act:
Right to prevent processing likely to cause damage or distress (1) Subject to subsection (2), an individual is entitled at any time by notice in writing to a data controller to require the data controller at the end of such period as is reasonable in the circumstances to cease, or not to begin, processing, or processing for a specified purpose or in a specified manner, any personal data in respect of which he is the data subject, on the ground that, for specified reasons -
(a) the processing of those data or their processing for that purpose or in that manner is causing or is likely to cause substantial damage or substantial distress to him or to another, and (b) that damage or distress is or would be unwarranted.
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply -
(a) in a case where any of the conditions in paragraphs 1 to 4 of Schedule 2 is met, or (b) in such other cases as may be prescribed by the Secretary of State by order.
(3) The data controller must within twenty-one days of receiving a notice under subsection (1) (¿the data subject notice¿) give the individual who gave it a written notice - (a) stating that he has complied or intends to comply with the data subject notice, or (b) stating his reasons for regarding the data subject notice as to any extent unjustified and the extent (if any) to which he has complied or intends to comply with it.

Virgin Media CEO: Net neutrality is "bollocks," promises to breach agreement with customers

April 14, 2008 4:01am

@#22 Asuffield,

Internet in the UK is a joke, the most expensive Zen Broadband allows only 50Gb downloads in a month.

Haha, for a whole family to use that, say maybe 2 adults and 3 children, that's 10Gb a month each pretty much.

That's insanely low, that's what? maybe a few piracy downloads, say 3 seasons of scene quality releases? 2 720p movie releases? or 2 DVD ISOs? 10 720p tv shows? not even 2 games!

Even for the father of the family who uses the internet legitimately, that's maybe 30 streamed TV shows (around one a day on 4OD, BBC iPlayer, ITV catchup), then he can't download any more albums from itunes...

Sorry but I'm here in Switzerland getting 15mbps downstream (maybe drops to 8 during peak hours) and unlimited download, it's about time the UK caught up I say.

Pop-bottle rocket headed into orbit?

February 18, 2008 5:09pm

I agree, and no need for fancy-pants Wikipedia-ing to show that 5kms is way sub orbit. I mean, jets fly over 10kms!

It's pretty cool that he's able to do that, but to be fair, people claiming that space is anything below 100kms annoys me. Especially calling it orbit is lame, because there's actually no chance a bottle rocket could orbit earth at such altitudes.

Freeconomy practitioner will walk from UK to India without touching money

February 1, 2008 12:44pm

In holland a program called "Nu we er toch zijn" airs on the public broadcast. It's based on a similar principle. Without spending money, the presentor, one soundman and a camera man aim to visit different municipalities for a weekend and rate them according to their hospitality.

They try to find a means of transport, find places to eat and sleep, meet interesting locals and the mayor.

They even went to Curacao for a special episode and spent a few days there without spending any money.

But I guess, like this guy, and them, if you have a camera man with you. It's a LOT easier!
