Californian drivers, put your phones down

July 3, 2008 5:02am

Living in the UK, and having been to California several times so far this year, the amount of people on the phone while driving is quite unbelievable...

I took a cab from SFO airport to Santa Clara and back and the driver was on his phone 100% of the drive.

Fear and self-loathing in stealing Wi-Fi

June 24, 2008 4:39am

I use fon as well...
The box manages 2 wifi networks: one private with wpa and one public with the fon system which tunnel straight to the internet (can't access your local network)...

I've been riding on people's wifi as well, mostly when travelling... I try to keep the burden for them to a minimum...

Plate offers millimeter-precise cake division

He He... I'm one of five sibling... Diner time were a race to try to be first for seconds... with five kids, if you're any good, you can discretly get third while they're fiunishing dishing seconds (being first and last for seconds)...

And at my grand parents, we were 10 cousins between the age of 5 and 13... Meals were never dull... My grand ma always use to threaten to bring out the chips balance as everybody was always complaining that dishing wasn't fair...

great memories all this...

Eglu Cube: Urban Chicken Coop

April 8, 2008 7:59am

My neighbor has one of these... Cool but way overpriced !! She lets the chickens out during the day and put them back in for the night to avoid foxes...

She didn't mention the evil racoons...

LEGO Indiana Jones Videogame Will Be Nazi-Free

The second world war is still a very sensitive subject in Europe. Maybe because of a lasting guilt about what happened then. I think there is the widespread idea that these things are just too serious to be a game or something fun.

Filial piety: letting your father-in-law nurse at your breast

February 1, 2008 2:22am

There is a similar episode described in The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck... During the big migration following the 1929 crisis, an old man is too weak to eat anything and get his life saved temporarlilly thanks to a nursing woman offering her breast...

Maybe this is the same sort of context, in which case it would be a beautifull gesture, rather than something perverted (Although, I have to admit, it made my mind wonder with envy when I first read it...)

Student Given Detention for Using Firefox; Update: Kid Not Exactly Blameless

December 17, 2007 9:58am

If the problem is an obedience issue, then the wording on the detention slip is really misleading...

To me it looks like someone who's got an ego problem and lacks the technological background to teach the subject.

Icelandic tourist to US held for two days, shackled, deported -- over a ten-year-old visa mistake

December 17, 2007 9:54am

I use to go Christmas shopping to NYC every year for a long week end... I stopped about three years as I felt no longer confortable with hoops you have to go through to be admitted.

There must be a way to do this job without being arbitrary, hostile and downright rude... I did feel that the margin was getting narrower each time and that there would be a point where you'd be in trouble just for expressing your discontent.

Not for me, thank you very much, i'll take my buisness elsewhere... (shame when you consider the price of the dollar)

Loss of tourism costs USA $100B, 200K jobs, $16B in tax revenue

November 3, 2007 1:42pm

We used to travel to New York City every year for a long week end...
We used to have a really good time there... We've given up for the time being, it's just way too much hassle...
Last time we went, I really had this impression that we were at the mercy of the security staff, that if one didn't like our face or attitude, we could be in for so much trouble...
That's really put me off, which is a shame because I really love NYC and with the cheap dollar, the shopping would be insane...
