Diamonds in the Rough: documentary on Uganda's politicized hiphop scene

Takuan:

the vernacular definition always wins, I guess. I'll be careful now of the fancy names I try to give to the things I'm eating to impress people.

wiki sez that bushmeat is game specific to the humid tropics of the Americas, Asia, and Africa, I don't really know of a more authoritative source on the matter, unfortunately.

This looks like a fantastic film.. I hope it comes to Wisconsin soon!

Speaking of bushmeat.. I just got to try some recently. My parents went to South Africa on business and brought me back some delicious kudu jerkey. I'm sorry if I'm being ignorant by calling it bushmeat, however since I don't think the animal is domesticated I believe it's still accurate.

Anyways, I always love to see hiphop culture being used as the beautiful, subversive and empowering thing it was meant to be. Not that I don't love me some Snoop Dogg and Dre on a nearly daily basis, but they have nothing on these guys.

Plate offers millimeter-precise cake division

My 63 year old kansan father instituted the same rule in our household, just as his pappy did before him. He nonetheless still needed to use his fork and knife simultaneously as instruments of siege warfare and eating to defend his plate from his older brother, or so he tells me.

This little device inspires me to force my hypothetical progeny to make their own millimeter-precise cake dial if fairness is such an issue.. because no self-respecting parent should waste 45 loonies when there are valuable lessons in precision craftsmanship to be learned.

Street food in Beijing

May 21, 2008 6:01pm

Tobyfee is pretty much right.. another time you will see these kinds of foods, particularly the insects, is during the temple fair time of year when people come in from the outer provinces and set up stands. Scallion pancakes and deep fried bread (kinds of like a non-sweet cruller) are two delicious and easy to find beijing street foods.

Stinky tofu is probably one of the nastiest things you can ever smell, let alone eat, and this is coming from someone who enjoys 10 year+ aged brick cheese made from limburger culture. I ordered it at a sichuanese restaurant in Queens called spicy and tasty (i highly, highly reccomend it for normal, non feces smelling food) and it cleared the room because it stank so bad. It tasted like pooped-out brie cheese, but I still ate about 1/4 of it out of pride. Now my family really can accuse me of wearing a shit eating grin.

Oh god, I've loved them forever. One of the best shows I've ever seen, including crowd surfing on top of a bass drum. Makes me proud to be of eastern european extraction.

Homework for everyone: read Svetlana Boym's History of Nostaglia. It'll help you understand why they are so damn popular with children of children of eastern european immigrants like myself.
