Samsung TL9 camera has analog gauges
July 16, 2008 8:22am
What's old is new again.
Nikon did this on their 35Ti (35mm P&S; ~1993). The Epson RD-1 also has analog gauges. Both were very expensive cameras, though.

Two tiny screws in iPhone 3G might mean replaceable battery
July 8, 2008 2:24pm
"Apple would never use screws..."
I've seen this written elsewhere, and I don't understand where this misconception got started. True, the Mac Mini, iMac, MacPro, iPod, & original iPhone have no exposed screws, but Apple's portable computer lineup all have exposed screws.
The Macbook has exposed screws, two on the left side, two on the right, and four on the back. More on the bottom, too.
Macbook air has 10 screws on the bottom. MB Pro also has screws on the sides & bottom.
Buick Reatta had a touchscreen interface in the '80s
June 23, 2008 10:48am
I remember my father brought home a demo of the Reatta's touchscreen computer on floppy for the PC, I believe. It had pretty snazzy graphics, IIRC, and even had 'music' when you turned the radio on, and had different tunes for different stations.
I hadn't thought about that for years...
Grand Theft Auto IV thoughts

Regardless, you have to admit the similarity. Bully, Manhunt, GTA, Max Payne...all Rock Star in some way, all third person in immersive environments (and all 'gritty' cities, except Bully). From Joel's post, I'm guessing that MP2 & GTA IV are at least 'environmentally' similar.
Grand Theft Auto IV thoughts

I'm curious: how does Liberty City in GTA IV compare to Max Payne 2? The city environs in that game were breathtaking, and they are both Rock Star games...
I don't have a PS3 yet, but GTA is making it very tempting. It is Friday, and I do have a weekend to play GTA, after all.
World's *est: Sony HDR-TG1 1080p Handycam
April 4, 2008 5:58am
I sure wish Sony would make it obvious if this was a 1080i or 1080p camera. Gadget blogs are saying one or the other, and the spec sheet on the Sony website is rather unhelpful.
If it's 1080p, then it's something special. If it's just a 1080i, then there are plenty of competitors already on the market.
Do I wait for this, or buy a Sanyo HD1000 now?
Fuji makes you sign bizarre EULA to buy a camera
April 2, 2008 2:11pm
This camera, complete with EULA, has been on sale for about a year now. Why is this all of a sudden an issue?
If you were the manufacturer of something that, when used improperly, has the potential of ruining someone's life (how would you like your boss/SO/etc) finding nude/semi-nude pictures of you?), wouldn't you have purchasers sign some legal booty-covering paperwork?
This seems like a non-issue to me. I'd find bigger things to protest about. I hear there's a war somewhere in the Middle East, and our credibility with the rest of the world is disintegrating...
Major update to Miro, the free/open Internet TV client
March 21, 2008 5:02am
I really wanted to like Democracy, but it had one fatal flaw for me: it would not show videos in native resolution. It always scaled them to window size. I just cannot stand scaled video, it's like fingernails on chalkoard to me. I ended up using VLC or QT to watch videos downloaded by Democracy, and then just stopped using it entirely. There were others on the forum with the same complaint, and I did file a bug report, I believe, but nothing changed.
I later tried one of the first 'Miro' releases (don't remember if it was a beta or point release or what), and it still had the same problem, so it got deleted as well.
I'll give it one last go-round tonight, but I'm not holding out much hope.
Leica M8 Upgrade Program a Bargain for the Rich
February 4, 2008 8:05am
Also, this is traditional Leica behavior. There have been many "upgrade" programs since the '30's on their cameras. I saw photos of a Standard that had been upgraded to a II way back in the day. That took skill.

"A 1Ds will get substantially better picture quality than medium format film cameras (in colour, at least) in a body that handles as well as the best and fastest of film 35mm bodies."
Um...no, a 1Ds will not best medium format film cameras. You need a digital back for a Hassy for that. And several 10's of thousands of dollars.

Understanding the New TSA Ban on Spare Rechargeable Batteries (It's Not That Bad)
January 2, 2008 7:26am
I think there is a discrepency in your article. TSA specifically says: "You may not pack a spare lithium battery in your checked baggage" (regardless of lithium content).
However, your comment at the end of the second to last paragraph says the opposite ("...carrying lots of low-capacity batteries in checked baggage is allowed".) This statement is incorrect, isn't it?

I'd be really interested to see a review of this. I'd like to have a modern, non-plasticy radio, but for $250, I want to make sure it's not a gimmick.
